I'm sorry to hear you are having such problems with your synology system. I am no expert when it comes to NAS and Mac OS X, but I will give it a shot:
I use a synology DS110j with 1TB of storage with my iMac, iPad, iPhone, PS3 (and until last month also a MBP 13") without any problems. The synology is connected to my airport extreme and the rest of the connections are through WIFI.
I followed the setup as suggested in the manual by synology and then I just moved the itunes media folder from ~/user/username/music to the ~/music folder on the NAS and redirected iTunes to use that folder on the NAS as it's primary folder (I also marked the option to copy files to the iTunes folder when adding them to the library). Then I just added my music/apps/books and it works!
What type of HD is in the synology? When I bought mine the website of synology had a list of "compatible" HDs because for some reason not every brand of HD will work with that NAS. For some unknown reason the shop in Holland that was selling me mine, suggested a HD that according to synology would give "slow read and write speeds", so I chose another brand.
Also, have you upgraded the DSM of the NAS? It used to be an annoying process but with DSM 3.0 it became a lot easier and could maybe help with the bad connectivity.
Good luck anyway and hopefully the synology will work for you eventually. It's one of my favorite devices in my setup!
