It tells me my SR MacBook Pro that I bought on July 16 was manufactured in 1997.

Interesting.

Seriously, what are we supposed to do with the information we get from the serial number? How does knowing the production week help? Is it like, if something goes wrong I can blame it on that and give the repair guy more info, or is it just going to torture me like knowing I have a Samsung screen? (Which, really, doesn't torture me since my screen is gaw-geous.)

I've been hearing some weird noises coming from where my magsafe plugs in and called them the other day (and the day before, and two weeks before that) about it. Yesterday a guy put me on hold for "a couple minutes" (twenty before I hung up) because he couldn't find the product code for the adapter. Turns out he walked over into a different department and never really came back. I'm thinking maybe it's because the old product is on its way out but the new product isn't really in yet... they finally found the right code and I got an email saying that my request was in, but haven't yet gotten an email that it shipped (the day before, they shipped me the wrong product and it shipped same day and arrived the next morning before noon) so I'm thinking maybe the replacement will be the smaller one - however I'm worried I'll be waiting 3-4 weeks for the shipment.

Can anyone confirm the new power adapters are available in stores to purchase? I just need an extra portable one.

Mine was built week 30 with the new power adapter.

If you have questions, call apple direct (1-800-my-apple) and talk to them. Don't deal with the yahoos at the apple stores, they have no idea, and will generally make something up. You can see the week number printed on the side of the box at the store, so you can check it.

I mentioned before, I called apple direct and they said that there was a 98% chance that the MBPs now selling at the apple stores will have the new power adapter with them.

I believe that the power adapter that I got with my MB Pro at the Alpharatta/North Point Mall, GA Apple Store on Monday is the updated small one.

i just recieved my MBP today with the new smaller adapter, and it is making strange noises... it sounds like a hissing/sizzling when i hold it up to my ear. it's pretty loud, and im worried that it might not be safe/ could cause problems down the road. anyone else experience this?

That happened with my MacBook's and I got a replacement power adapter from the genius bar at an apple store for free.

edit: speaking of which, the new one looks exactly like the macbook's adapter. sigh, how am i going to tell bricks apart now :(

I haven't really seen a MB adapter, but are you sure that they are exactly the same? Cause if they are, Apple has made a pretty big mistake.

If the bottom two quoted threads have correct images, yes, the new adapter looks like the MacBook's at first glance even though they are slightly different e.g. wattage. I don't have a large MBP one to compare to right now, and I don't have a new one to compare to either, but it sure does look extremely similar in size.

If I ordered over the phone on the 27th but's not due to ship until next week, (Aug 6-9th) which power adapter do you think I will get? And what's the big deal about the power adapter? Just the size, or is there something else?

They are the same size, but the MBP adapter is made for 85 W, so thats enough power for you to charge the notebook AND use it at the same time.

If you connect a MB adapter (which is 65 W) to a MBP, then it will work, but it won't charge very fast if at all. If you want it to charge the battery using the MB adapter, you'll have to turn it off or put it in sleep. It doesn't give enough power to do both, so don't make the mistake of thinking they are the same.

Sounds like you'll be getting the smaller power adapter. Congrats!

I realize what you are saying, but what I was trying to get at is a MB owner plugging in a MBP charger. It may not do anything or it may cause some problems with the charger or the MB.

It's fine. The MB will draw only as much power as it needs. No harm will be done to either the MB or the charger.

Apple routinely uses MBP chargers at their Genius Bars to power both MBs and MBPs that people bring in.

using either adapter is fine for both laptops, although the power needs of the MBP might not be fulfilled by using an MB adapter.

If it wasn't clear, I meant to say the two adapters physically look the same, although they are slightly different (85 v. 60w).
