Student discount question

hey guys, my brother goes to Stony Brook university here in NY, hes coming back in 2 weeks and i was planing to get him the 2011 iMac with his student discount (100 bucks on the 27 inch base iMac)

Now i wanted to ask, can i buy the iMac with the student discount without my brother coming with me to the store(since he is the student) . I want to kind of surprise him before he comes back so thats why i ask.
 
If you go to a brick & mortar Apple retail store, then they will ask to see the student's ID to verify that the purchase is indeed for a student.

Also, you may just want to wait until the back-to-school (free iPod) program starts at the end of the month, fyi.
 
its not really free though, u still have to pay for the ipod right?

Initially. However, you get a rebate within a couple of weeks.

Cost of iPod + tax - rebate = (nearly) free iPod.

Also, don't forget the free printer you can get. Same formula as above.
 
ill def get the free printer but i wanted to ask, what do u mean "nearly" free ipod touch, as in they only return you the amount the ipod minus the tax?

so u pay the price of the ipod plus tax of course but they return u in the rebate check only the price of the ipod without the tax?

By the way, is the check they send u a normal check that i can put in the bank or its a special check that you must spend in the apple store or something like that?


i just called the apple store and they deny any free ipod touch deal is going to come anytime soon.

They would have denied an iMac release if you would have called them yesterday too.

My brother who goes to Stony Brook university will be back in 2 weeks. basically if i go back to the store with him after 2 weeks when hes back with the receipt of the purchase, will they give me a 100 dollars back?

I called them and from what i understand i can do the above, what do u guys think?

it sucks i have to wait 2 weeks for him to come back.

They might.. but you should call them and VERIFY that before you do this. Ask to speak with their manager/head employee on this.
 
see, i called them and they said i can do that. they keep in repeating harshly that i must present a school ID and a state ID which is fine but they seem to be strict on that part.

I dont know what to do.

About the free ipod touch deal, when is it going to come along? May what? approximately?
 
Well, it sounds like you can do that then. Just make sure you have everything you need.

The free iPod Touch deal starts at the very end of May, I thought it might be only at the online apple store though

Why don't you just order it online where you don't need any proof. It will be there well before 2 weeks from now.

Yup. You pay for the iPod and you are refunded only what you spend on the iPod itself and not the tax.

Normal check that you deposit in your bank account.

Seriously, Apple employees do not know anything until it is actually going on. You can go there and ask when the next iPod refresh will be (probably September, because it has become an annual thing) and they will tell you A) They flat out do not know or B) they will deny any knowledge or speculation because they honestly do not know anything.

If you do a quick search through this forum and/or Google for Apple's free iPod/back-to-school promotion, you will find that it has typically started in late May for the past few years. It is an annual promotion that has a very good chance of happening this year as well.

^This. I have ordered from there numerous times during my college career, and they have never asked for proof.

Seriously? Why don't you just have some patience and wait for your brother? Is it really that important that you surprise him with the computer in hand? Are you going to actually going to take it out of the box and set it up for him and put a pretty pink bow on it as he walks into the room? Did you ever stop to think that this may not be the computer that he wants or needs?

Take a page out of my book, get him a $1,000 Apple gift card to initially surprise him and say that it is up to him to choose the computer he wants and needs so he can add all the bells if he so desires (or not add them) and offer to pay the difference in anything else he gets in full. That way, you don't have to make the difficult decisions and risk getting him something that may not fit his needs or personality.

i dont want to order it online because i want to pick it up myself and not have it shipped to me.

so basically the ipod promotion is not really a FREE ipod, u end up paying like 40 bucks for it (cuz of the tax).

I dont think i want that ipod, ill pay the 100 bucks for the HP printer but i dont think its worth waiting for the free ipod touch.. i dont know :confused:
 
1. I don't know why you wouldn't just order online, I've never had one issue in ordering things online from apple.

2. They will most definitely give you the student discount if you return with your brother to the store. To double check ask the sales person if this is true and get their business card so you have a point of contact.

3. What sort of sales tax do you have that tax on a $229 iPod would be $40? Even still, that'd be cheaper than any other iPod touch you'd get normally.
 
I just want to point out that I heard the same thing as someone else on the forum: according to several Apple employees, there will probably not be a free IPod touch promotion this year. And this wasn't an Apple employee denying speculation about the future, this employee genuinely does not think the promotion will happen this year.
