So I was going to buy a ipod nano and a ibook but... the rebate doesn't specify anything about the nano and you can't bu y the min's anymore? Should I start a petition about this or what?

The rebate specifies which model #'s are eligible for the rebate, and the nano, from what I've heard, is not currently eligible nor will it be in the near future.

Not sure how much a petition would do, but seeing as how the nano is the "new kid on the block", I'm thinking Apple knows that the nano will sell on its own, therefore no reason to put a rebate on it.

The Nano cannot be used with the rebate. Currently there are mini's available, but they might run out by 9/24. Then you'll be stuck with a normal iPod. Imagine the horror.

No the rebate is for a free mini OR $179 towards another iPod, a Nano is another iPod and thus is included in the rebate program as a "free nano"

rather than place your order online, call apple and talk to their rep about this and see what they say.

thats only if you go to the apple store, online you can select a free mini or a monetary value of the mini to apply to another iPod of your choice. ;)

Doesn't matter. When you cut out the SKU from the nano and your other Mac purchase, fill in forms and mail it in, Apple will not cut you the $179 check.

Correct.

Read more here:

iPod, iPod mini, and iPod photo qualify for this o?er. iPod shu?e is excluded from this offer. (Qualifying iPod Part Numbers: M9829/P9829, M9802/P9802, M9800/P9800, M9804/P9804, M9806/P9806, M9801/P9801, M9803/P9803, M9805/P9805, M9807/P9807, M9830/P9830, M9282/P9282, MA079/PA079).
Nano Model #'s are:
MA004LL/A (2gb, white)
MA099LL/A (2gb, black)
MA005LL/A (4gb, white)
MA107LL/A (4gb, black)

Therefore, like the quoted poster said... if you were to buy a nano + mac per the student union conditions, and tried to send in the UPC labels for your new mac and nano, they would deny your rebate check request. The shuffle and nanos are NOT eligible for rebates under the student union promotion.

I just bought an iMac and a blue Mini to take advantage of the Student Union offer. And having been to law school, I read the fine print, where it specifies the part number of the iPods that qualify. So unless the Nanos share a part number with the Mini's, which I find inconceivable, I agree with DJKNY (who I'm sure is MUCH happier that I do. . . ;) ).

I think you could certainly select a Nano in the online store, but you would not receive the $179.00 rebate check from Apple.

Best,

Bob

I used my Edu-staff discount to get a 12"PB and iPod mini (6GB) earlier in the summer, just got my rebate check yesterday. :)

Rebates (especially this one) are fun because you kind of forget that it's coming, and when you see that Apple envelope and suddenly remember what's inside... got a nice and fuzzy feeling opening that. :)

Slightly off-topic, but rather than opening a whole new thread: Does anyone know which UPC you have to send in from the iPod mini box? Is it the little 30x7mm one on the narrow side?

Its the underneath thing with all the barcode. One of them even says UPC. You have to cut off that whole thing.

this is bs. so i go to buy my powerbook with the student discount and the money that you can use to another ipod is not allowed to be spent on the nano. so i didnt take the powerbook. i already have a 20gb ipod i dont need another bigger one. I WANT A NANO DAM IT!!!!!

I sent in a rebate for a non-qualifying product that was received after the expiration date for the rebate, and they cut me a check.

Feel free to give it a try, but you have to be willing to suck it up if they deny it.

No

I work at an Apple Authorized Retailer and NO, you cannot use the $179 rebate towards the iPod nano. I got the letter directly from Apple.

Is that under the sticker? Because it specifically states on the rebate form that they won't accept the sticker.

So, in other words, the whole "iPod mini + machine = free iPod mini" program was really a clever way for Apple to dispose of as much iPod mini inventory as possible in a short period of time...

We should pay more attention to future Apple promotions that offer "free" gear for making particular purchases... the "free" gear is likely to be what's getting ready to be discontinued.

Relax . . . now take a deep breath . . .

Order your PowerBook and an iPod mini. Cut the UPCs and send in for the rebate. Sell the iPod mini on eBay. Take the money from the rebate and eBay sale and put it towards the iPod nano.

If you have difficulty spotting the iPod mini on the Apple online store, just pay attention to the text in the left gray column. "iPod mini" should be there.

wow.

That is so ridiculous. Smart move by Apple, until the consumer finds out. That's f***ing retarded.

It's also probably the reason why all the iPod accessories are shipping free of charge at the moment (I think they still are) the new nano can't be used with any existing accessories and I suspect the new iPods when they come out may have a slightly changed form factor which would mean the same.

I know there's no Keynote in Paris but there's bound to be some sort of release relating to iPods - it's been over a year since the release of the 4th generation iPod and despite the addition of a colour screen to the range, they are still classed as 4th Gens. Maybe the mini's form factor will be making a comeback of sorts in the guise of the new full-sized iPod (don't know what a big mini would look like "in the metal" but it would make a decent mock-up for those with half-decent Photoshop skills)

On the other hand the style of the big ipod is iconic so maybe if they got a little slimmer and lighter with perhaps new features and plugging the huge gap between the 20Gb and 60GB models that would be OK by me too.

I think my optimum situation would be to use my current 3G 15GB iPod as a "music server" of sorts and a new 2GB or 4GB iPod nano as my everyday iPod.

Now to get a serious pile of cash to drop in my lap.....nope, nothing yet.

But they do a similar deal every year in August-September. They're not always up to something. Right before I bought my 12" PB several years ago, they offered a $300 (CDN) rebate if I bought an iPod with my new Mac. An iPod cost $450 at the time, I think. Anyway, they didn't have iPod Mini's at the time. Now they do, and they offer that for free with a Mac purchase, or money towards a big iPod.

And it's not like they're tricking you. You got exactly what you wanted.....an iPod Mini. It was still good yesterday, wasn't it?? They gave you an iPod Mini for almost nothing. Would you rather have a Powerbook, or a PowerBook + Mini for the same price?

Get over it.

What makes you think the Nano doesn't use existing accessories. This is from the apple store: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPodxAccessoriesEditorial

And because it’s an iPod, hundreds of today’s accessories — including chargers, headphones and portable speakers — work with iPod nano right out of the box.

I am hoping to buy a powerbook when the new ones get released. While it sucks I won't get a Nano, I'd rather have a free mini then pay for one.

The nano has the same 30-pin dock connector as the other iPods so it will work with most current accessories. I'm not sure where the incompatability issue came into play.
