Just today I noticed a 17" LCD for $179. I can buy a generic USB keyboad and mouse locally for $7 each. and I imagine someone on a buget would go for the lower spec'd Mini. So the package would be under $1K.

You are right. the Mac is a better value. I'll buy a 20" iMac once the Universal Binaries become available and the "speed bumped" 20 inch rev B is offered likely later this year or early 2007.
