the OP is right; the imac is a better deal. But $1300 may just be an impossible number for some people while $800 isn't.

Just today I noticed a 17" LCD for $179. I can buy a generic USB keyboad and mouse locally for $7 each. and I imagine someone on a buget would go for the lower spec'd Mini. So the package would be under $1K.

The REAL bargin is the old 1.2Ghz Mini. A local retailer has them for $250. That's a steal. Apple should offer some entry level mac in the sub $500 range They need a $450 product. Call it the eMachine Killerr"

You are right. the Mac is a better value. I'll buy a 20" iMac once the Universal Binaries become available and the "speed bumped" 20 inch rev B is offered likely later this year or early 2007.

Actually, if you wanted to buy a few machines for distributed builds in Xcode, the Core Duo mini crushes anything else you can buy from a price/performance perspective, especially now that it's packing Gigabit ethernet.

I bet some of those Mac Mini farms will be very excited to upgrade.

This thread is stupid.

iMac has been the "best bang for the buck" Mac for many years now and it is unfair to compare Mac mini against it. Mac mini is intended to be the cheapest desktop Mac. Simple as that. If you want faster and better equipped Mac, get an iMac. Just as people buy iPod nano instead of full-sized iPod, there's market for both products.

If Mac mini has as good of a GPU, CPU about as fast, and as large and speedy hard disk as iMac, with a competitive price tag no less, who on earth would buy iMac? $100 price increase is somewhat unfortunate, but come on people!

I've been looking for exactly that! Mind PMing me the name of the retailer?

come on

what if you have a 23'' screen or 42'' Plasma TV/Computer screen?

Come on, i think that this thread is stupid, why well mall those other poster said it

The mini gets you rolling with Mac OSX at an affordable low risk investment.
That's hardly stupid.

My beige 300 MHz G3 tower with 64 MB RAM, CD drive, 16 MB VRAM,
8.5 GB SCSI HD and the optonal A/V personality card ran $2700.00
just for the CPU with education discount back in 1998.

Compare those old specs to a new Core duo mini.
Way more computer than most users will ever need.

If that doesn't cover your needs then go for the 17" iMac.

Either was you get a great machine without going off the deep end
during these rapid upgrade cycles.

It makes sense for all those who already have a good monitor, already have a keyboard and mouse, already have an iSight, don't play games, and don't need the extra storage/speed.

...or those who have a limited budget. (I know this may surprise some people, but $500 can make a big difference in some people's budget.)

The macmini was perfect for me this time around. I did not want the All-in -One. I did not want to spend over $1000.00. The macmini is about 20x faster than my old iMac G4. I'm getting 90% of the power of the InteliMac.

I can play 1080p H.264, and encode Handbrake H.264 at 20-25 FPS. I was getting 3 with the old iMac.

I upgraded the RAM to 2 gigs. I can upgrade gradually as I wish. I would rather wait and save up for a 20-24" LCD, than be stuck with the 17".

Can you tell I am happy with my Macmini?

Cheers!

i wonder where apple makes the most profit.
given the spec's of the imac's compared to the mini's i guess apple makes a lot more profit (percentage wise) on the mini's.

while i think there are many reasons to go with the mini i also think that it is too expensive.

my two cents.

... thats my whole point.

the price gap between the pimped out mac mini and the imac is
so small that it doesnt make sence.

the mac mini is a great idea.. but i think its priced to high
for what it is.

It makes you think.. woah the imac must be a great deal..
but when you compare it to other computers on the market
its still a little bit more expensive.. which is fine cuz you do
pay more for apple.

its just too expensive to be considered an affordable mac.

Too all the "Stupid" people

If you really think im calling you "Stupid" for buying a
Mac Mini.. then guess what... you ARE stupid.

that has nothing to do with what this thread is about.
Im surprised at how many people chose to be offened by that
(how old are you 12?)

if your that insecure
PLEASE DONT POST HERE

Everyone wanted a headless iMac.

if you deduct the price of the
-LCD monitor (the old 17LCD was about $699)
-iSight $149
-Keyboard $49
-Mighty Mouse $59

the price of whats left should be a little cheaper then the
most expensive Macmini.

but what to we get?
we get a smaller HD, no graphics card, smaller Intel chip etc etc.
all this for a little bit MORE.

it doesnt make sence. i want a nice graphic card!!
but i dont want to be forced to buy the all-in-one imac.

So to me, the Macmini doesnt make sence.
Its NOT the answer to the headless iMac.

its a cool little unit that you can use to surf the web...
at a huge price.

The power Mac is over kill for me, the iMac is about where i need my computer to be...
but i have 2 nice displays already and i own keyboards and a ton of mice and trackballs..
the Mac Mini just doesnt cut it for the price.

Am i the only one in this kinda position? I like to play games on my mac
but i dont need the power of the PowerMac to do it and you cannt
play games on a mac mini

Okay, let me get this straight. You're accusing Mac mini owners of being immature (referring to the age 12 comment), yet you're saying crap like "you ARE stupid."

Seriously, man... just back off. I actually plan on getting a Mac mini Core Duo and you know what? I think I'll enjoy it plenty. :D Who are you to judge others of their purchases? And obviously people are going to rebel against you. I mean, seriously, if you are going to make a thread like this, you're just asking for it.

Okay, I'm done.

Okay, so that part of my post is kind of... unorganized. What I was saying is he was calling us 12 because we were so "offended", yet he goes on to call us "STUPID." Yeah, he looks good now.
