I think with respect to the law school testing software, it's very stringent -- someone described it on here before. IIRC, you had to insert the software disc and then reboot the computer off it, so that it could even verify no other software was running or something like that. So there were really no workarounds to using the law school stuff on a computer running Windows natively. But I'm not sure that any other scholastic area has such a tight system in place as of yet, at least here in the US....

The MacBook would be my first choice but it will run you a little more than your budget. Otherwise my vote will go for the Thinkpad those machines used to be solid. I don't know about the newest generation though. Another option might be a Toshiba Satellite.

Personally I like to stay away from Dell, HP, Compaq, Sony. Even though Dell's CS is pretty decent.

Get a macbook and it'll probably last twice as long as a windoze:mad: laptop, and it will not constantly be in for repairs like the pc.

Not to sidetrack, but how far away is your friend from a purchase? And how far away do you think we are from seeing the first wave of refurb MacBooks? I tend to think that they will show up by mid-summer -- like late-July-ish. And probably start at $899 or so? That might also be an option.

well i'm a macaholic thats all i'll use but some people tend to be stubborn and not want to switch, which is why a macbook may be perfect but expensive... waiting is an option because school won't start til mid august... has anyone heard anything on the hp dv6000 or hp zv4000 because those are cheap on ebay and look good in some of the reviews... thanks for all the help...
