3. Use BDSuptoSub to convert the extracted .sup file to a .sub and .idx file. (make sure you checkmark forced only)

I have extracted the .sup file (for Avatar) and loaded it into BDSup2Sub (4.0.0 for Mac OSX). However, I do not see an option to check "forced only". There is an option for "Global Forced Flags" where the "Force All" option has three choices: "Keep"; "Set All" and "Clear All".

Set this to "Keep"?

Thanks your help.

New problem. Can anyone explain to me how I install MKVToolnix or MKVMerge on my Mac (Snow Leopard). I have tried everything I know, but I can't get it to install and MacPorts won't install either.

Running out of hair...

There's a Mac binary with a GUI for it here, so you don't have to deal with MacPorts.

(I admit it looks kinda shady, but it's the version I've been using.)

Sorry to resurrect an old topic, but I never got this resolved. I have not been able to find a non-English only subtitle track, so the only way to watch this movie is with the subtitles on full time, which is annoying not least for the fact that the subtitles for the English dialog are often gibberish

TIA

Sorry but I'm on my phone. I'm almost 99% positive I downloaded the Navi only section from here:

http://subscene.com/Avatar/subtitles-80311.aspx

Added the .srt with Subler. I watch everything through AppleTV, and while it's "soft" (meaning I have to turn it on right when i start the movie) - displays perfectly.

Thanks, but I've tried this one. It downloads fine but, when I open it I get the confirmation box asking if I want to open an app from the internet and, when I click "Open", the app closes.

Here's where I am:

I didn't have any joy getting MKVToolnix / MKVMerge working, so I downloaded a Na'vi only subtitle set for "Avatar" from the subscene link above (thanks omni) and that worked. For "Battle of Britain", I could not get Jubler to recognise mplayer, so I played the movie in iTunes and scrubbed the English dialog text from the .srt using Jubler in a side window. I encoded both movies with their new soft subtitle sets and both came out looking fantastic with perfectly timed subtitles.

I'd prefer to burn in the subs, but this is a workable solution. The movies look great in HD and the subs don't take anything away. I may go back and make the font size larger, but that's about it and, now that I have the necessary .srt files and Jubler, this will be a piece of cake.

Thanks all for your help (although I'd still appreciate some sort of idiots guide to downloading and installing MKVtoolnix on a Mac, as I am clearly missing something).

I will tell you if you look at this thread and install these scripts, that I get all my subtitles from BD's perfect everytime. The scripts allow you to put the Blue ray in, rip and encode in just a few clicks. All the muxing, and getting subtitles is done for you.

I am about to embark on a ripping frenzy, so this makes a lot of sense. Trouble is, I cannot get MKVToolnix to install (see post above). Any ideas? I have all the other software installed.

I use ffmpegX: converts between formats and can hardcode subs to many video formats.

Not really, I just went back and re-read your woes on installing MKVTools. I downloaded, and opened and said yes. I am fairly new to MAC's, so I know that either you install it, or drag the program to your applications folder. I don't remember which for this one.

I'm sure I've tried both, but I'll have another crack at it tonight.

Here's where to get MKVToolNix from for the Mac:

The problem with using SRT is it is only text and is often inaccurate and off but more importantly it will not look the same as on the Blu Ray. Especially with Avatar because they created their own special fonts for the Navi language which does add to the experience. Using the method I described the forced subtitles look exactly the same as they do on the Blu Ray because they are just images from the Blu Ray and those images are just burned onto the video with Handbrake.

One small catch you need to do in BDSuptoSub to get the colors correct when using Handbrake. Go to Settings and select Swap Cr/Cb, then save/export as normal. After encoding with Handbrake it looks exactly like on the Blu Ray disc.

I use Plex to preview my Blu Rays if I need to decide whether I want to keep a track or not and for seeing how the subtitles turned out. Sometimes I decide to keep the Commentary tracks for instance and some contain both a Director's commentary and an Actor's commentary. With Plex I can select each audio track on the mkv to see what is what.

The other nice thing about Plex is that it handles both the PGS .sup files on the Blu Ray as well as the converted VoBSuB .sub files you can compare how your subtitles turned out before actually encoding with Handbrake.

This works

Just to say I downloaded latest versions of the various programs last night (quad core iMac 27" running Snow Leopard) and newagemac's instructions worked for me.

I got M4Vs from Handbrake with burned in English subtitles.

There were a few odd messages along the way like saying the subtitles were in German but no corrective action was needed.

Thanks

So here's my process on how to do the forced subtitles from Blu Rays using only Mac software:
