That porter cable costs as much as replacing the screen, if not the whole iPad.

However, if you are into detailing, and already have the porter cable, I suggest you check out Adam's Polishes. I use it on my 2010 Camaro and the results are second to none.

Hey OP. I think you did a wonderful job. Does the auto paint sealant scratch like the oleophobic coating did?

Paint sealant is basically just synthetic wax, so while it doesn't scratch per se, it will come off eventually (immediately if you clean it with Windex, alcohol, or another mild solvent).

I've got a hairline scratch on my ipad, it's not deep but I can feel it slightly with my fingernail and it bugs the crap out me. I was hoping for a little guidance from you on how to remove it. I have a variable speed polisher, pads, etc., but I am by no means an expert on buffing/polishing. What compound should I use and what steps should I take to restore my screen back as you did.

Is the polisher you have a rotary or dual-action (random orbital)? I don't have any experience with rotary polishers so I can't offer any advice if it's the former. If it's a DA polisher, you're going to need something relatively aggressive to take out a scratch you can feel with your nail. I'd start with a glass polishing kit (something like this) to get the scratch out and then follow up with an orange or white polishing pad and some finishing polish to remove any haze.

That is really impressive. I've got these same scratches in the coating, does a screen shield make them less visible?

YES!

I have a scratch on the black bezel area. It was there out of the box, but Apple wouldn't exchange it. I put a screen protector on, and the scratch is invisible. Out of sight out of mind.

kfscoll need advice

Hey kfscoll.

I have a Dremel 4000 and I would like to polish out the surface scratches I have on my iPhone.

I was just wondering whether I could use the dremel and a hard felt bob to polish the scratches.

Also is there another type of polishing compound which I can buy. I searched
3M Perfect-It Foam Polishing Pad Glaze - Light 16 oz and it seems like a hard product to find in store. What else do you think I could use.

I wouldn't use a Dremel. Not to say it wouldn't work, but it's too much speed and too much heat in too small an area IMHO. My method "leveled" the glass evenly across its entire surface, but I think using a Dremel in a small area would leave a noticeable dip or groove. I don't think you'd be satisfied with the results.

I'm not sure what you'd want to use with a Dremel, but almost any type of swirl mark remover would work with my method.

I wouldn't use a Dremel if I were you. It's too much speed in too small of an area. The random orbital polisher that I used polishes the whole surface of the glass evenly...the Dremel only does one small spot. I bet you'll be able to see where you used the Dremel on it...there will be a little divot. But hey, it's your iPad.

Wedding rings (not for long)

Do you know how soft wedding rings usually are - you gring right through it before long if you remove scratches as often as you imply above.

I wouldn't let my Dremel tool near any jewellery or my iPhone.
