I have to change my internal DVD multi drive (Mac Pro 2010).
Do you have any suggestions?
Suggestions for Blu-ray drives are also welcome.

Thank you in advance!

Pioneer make the best optical drives. I'd buy this if I were you. And it can playback UHD Blu-rays (4K) if you have a 4K monitor to go with it:

Indeed Pioneer makes the best optical as i heard. Does it has to be the specific one?
The BDR-209BDK will not work?

Bought this drive last year. Works well in my MacPro. Easy installation.

Thank you for your suggestion. If i dont find a pioneer model i will go with LG.

Barring some unusually exotic models, any normal SATA 5.25" DVD or Blu-ray drive is going to be operationally compatible with a 2010 Mac Pro even if it says it is only compatible with Windows.

The only caveat is that the tray's bezel has to be removed for it to work as an internal drive in a Mac Pro. As far as I know, most typical optical drives have trays with removable bezels. Probably every normal Pioneer and LG model has a removable tray bezel.

However, since I cannot promise that every single drive model has a removable tray bezel, if you want to be super safe then only buy a drive that someone else has already successfully installed in a Mac Pro.

I used to swear by Pioneer, but I had bad luck (premature failure) with my last 2 examples. I now have two LG drives in my cMP 5,1. A HL-DT-ST BD-RE and a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM. Both have been trouble free. One is Blu-Ray the other DVD-RAM.

Oh yeah, one more caveat. Many drives will make a noise every few minutes if OSX is booted and there is no disc inserted. Some do not. The problem doesn't happen in Windows. It also doesn't happen if there is a disc inserted.

There was a thread where people reported which ones do and do not make that noise, but that's a really old thread and probably all of the listed models are long obsolete.

I purchased and received this yesterday:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007VPGL5U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I installed in my cMP 5,1 replacing the existing superdrive and it went well. However it will mount and play standard DVD's just fine, however it will not even mount or see when a Blu-ray Disc is in. I totally understand the software limitations, however I am trying to utilize handbrake and make mkv for home lab.

When I plug in my external blu ray through usb it will mount the blu ray to the desktop, but not the internal new blu ray drive. Any suggestions?

^^^^Yes, there are Blu Ray player software for the Mac. Presently I am using 4Videosoft Free Mac Blu-ray Player. It does have limitations, but it works. It mounts blu ray, allows me to play blu ray, Though I have never tried it, it will also record blu ray. There are many other software solutions:

blu ray software for mac

Thanks for the help. I'll check out the software when I get home. I do have to ask though, how come my external usb blu ray drive mounted the disc to the desktop with no software but the internal drive needs it?

That is the one I'm using its in the lower bay in my 2009 mac pro before that it was in my2006 mac pro. I use the macro blu ray player if you get the pro one be warned if you rip content to one of your drives it will remove it. so if you use that player rip and store blu ray disc to external drive not mounted when playing disc. also with final cut you can take HD video and make your own blu ray disc.

I'm using two Pioneer blu ray drives, BDR-207DBK and BDR-2209. Both works fine for burning to double layer blu ray using Toast Titanium. The Pioneer BDR-207DBK has been with me for 5 years and still running smoothly. On watching blu ray movies, I use MacGo Blu Ray Player. http://www.macblurayplayer.com/

I'll also be ordering a LG WH16NS40 blu ray drive soon.

Just fitted a new Pioneer BDR-209DBK to my 5,1 last night, and whilst I managed to import a few audio CD's, the machine clearly has issues with the drive, so sadly had to pull it out again today and put an old Samsung DVD drive in that I had lying around.
