I think i'll go with the Pioneer BDR-2209 :)

Sorry to ressurect this thread. I'm wondering if anyone else has used the Pioneer BDR209DBK drive in their MacPro's? I am aware that a while ago, you would have to set your power settings in such a way as to not let the machine put your drives to sleep, but am wondering if any subsequent OS updates have resolved this issue. I also see that Pioneer have now released a firmware update version 1.50 on the 2nd March 2018, but the link on their website isn't working. I've emailed Pioneer about this.

Hi MikeyMikeT5. I am using Pioneer BDR-209DBK blu-ray writer on my Mac Pro. It runs smoothly without problems in Mountain Lion or Mavericks. It can write XL blu-ray discs and play 3D blu-ray movies too. I did not encounter any power problems so far like the drive being put to sleep. In important note, if you plan to burn double layer XL blank blu-ray discs, you'll need to update the firmware using BDR-209DBK_FW150EU.EXE at the Pioneer page http://pioneer.jp/device_e/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00001r_e.html#firmware1 though the link isn't working as you mentioned. The firmware will enable you to write XL blu-ray discs using Toast Titanium.

Hi Macsonic,

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps it was a Sierra issue that I had last August when I tried it. I'm on High Sierra now, so will try fitting it again and see if it's still on the desktop when the machine wakes up...

Welcome MikeyMikeT5. Good luck and hope everything will work fine. I've avoided using the latest Mac OSXs due to the declining quality of the OS. Though I know they worked fine with other users.

I also need some features from Mountain Lion/Mavericks with my work and certain Disk Utility functions. And Mountain Lion and Mavericks are the last OS with coloured sidebars. Comes handy when you're managing multiple files and placing them in certain drives when you're in a rush. If the sidebar was in black and white, you would have to look carefully.

It seems that drive will not work in a Mac Pro as it does not satisfy the minimum requirements for DRM and AACS. It requires a 7th generation Core i5 or i7 with accompanying HD 630 graphics.

It's back in as of a few minutes ago, and working fine. But, the issue I had before, is that if the machine put the drives to sleep, the BDR209 wouldn't work afterwards. I had to restart in order for it to be there again. Will see what happens later, after it all sleeps...

No, I was referring to the BDR-211UBK ultra-HD 4K drive.

Sorry Andrew, I didn't read your quoted text and just assumed you meat the 209, my bad.

Just got up a few mins ago and upon waking the MP, the drive appears to still be mounted and working properly. If it dismounts during the day or after, I'll report back... :)

Curious to know what happens. I had bought a LG Blu Ray drive that would do the same thing when I mounted it internally---would disappear after sleep but it also caused some "instability". I hoped for a firmware update, but it never happened. Hoping the latest Mac OS makes it viable to mount internally again. I await your report before trying it again.

I'm surprised to hear about all this. I've had two different LG Blu-ray drives and neither had problems with sleep. I could dig up the model numbers, but I'm sure they are long discontinued.

Well, I've been on and off the office computer all day. I've tried it with all manner of discs, and empty, and each time I've woken the machine, the drive has been there, faultless. I'm really happy about this, so far... !

Also put a WD Gold 6TB drive in there that I bought a while ago, while I was putting the Pioneer Bluray drive in. :)

Just had an email back from Pioneer Tech Support in Japan, they've now fixed the firmware update link. Mine is working fine now, so I'll not be updating unless I encounter any issues...

Actually both of my LG WH16NS40 have sleep problems. One is in a external housing the other is internal to my cMP. LG just recently did a firmware update, that would only install on the external drive. I'm going to see how it behaves with that update installed. Support at MacSales wasn't super helpful.. even on a fresh macOS sierra install I ran into problems. With the external one I could at least power the drive down and back up. With the internal all I could do was reboot.
