It's not a real USB port. It can only be used for service purposes.
My plan is to hook up my external to my base express so I can drop drop from my comp...
But why do you need ATV for that? Can't your TV, DVD player, game console stream Netflix? Most of them can do it (and then some more).
It does not matter only if your screen size is smaller than 30". Otherwise it does matter (unless you sit ridiculously far):

so at 12 feet away, you're saying you have a 90 inch TV playing 1080p?
Riiiiiiiiight.
Who the hell sets within MAYBE 10 feet? The full benefits from 1080p are only visible at 10 feet on an 80 inch TV, which doesn't even exist.
I don't have a game console and I never play video games. I just got a free TV from a friend and I haven't had cable in two years. DVD player plays DVDs but I never buy DVDs and Blockbuster is going out of business so my DVD use will cut own dramatically. So being able to do digital downloads of new releases will be great.
That's what they said about the USB port on the first Apple TV - but from what I recall the hackers found uses for it.
I'll probably by the new one, I mean it's only $99 USD.
But my old Apple TV isn't going anywhere!
Here in Germany it costs 119
I understand that most people won't have a problem with its display resolution. Apple TV supports up to 720p...
I want 1080p. That is a big showstopper for me...![]()
Sorry pal but I can't understand if you are fooling me or yourself. One can get an impression that your budget might be tight at the moment. In this situation buying Apple products and renting TV shows from iTunes is probably not a very wise decision in general. You could just buy HDTV antenna ($40 for a reasonably good one), hook it up to your TV and enjoy TV shows for free (including Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS) and in better quality than the ones from iTunes.
I'm surprised by some of the negative reactions in this thread. I understand the need to want to control or own your media, but this device is not intended for the user who has 10,000 DVD's all ripped with very specific encoding settings and stored on a fire/water/hurricane/tornado/volcano proof external drive.
It's for the casual user who doesn't do all that, who just turns on a TV, and wants to watch movies and tv shows. No file management, no worrying about where the download is.
...
Amazing device, can't wait to pick one up and start enjoying my movie downloads on the best available screen.
