Terrific Black Friday price direct from Microsoft on the new Surface Pro 6 base model with type cover. Just £699 with i5, 8Gb RAM, 128Gb SSD and Platinum type cover.

I paid £749 for the equivalent Pro 5 package a while back but that i5 was only dual-core. Makes the iPad Pro prices look absolutely insane!

Thats cool then, is that turned on by default? I opted for the 256GB SSD version, fingers crossed most of that isn’t taken up with updates. I have heard that I can extend that tho with a micro SD card.

Yes I’ve also ordered the Surface Pen which should arrive on the same day :)

As GoldfishRT mentioned, the updates are handled through updates. The Apps are by default handled through the Windows Store App, but you can check the box in Windows Update to have them do both at once.

Major OS updates happen in Spring and Fall, the latest released in October. Patches often happen on Patch Tuesday, but you may get minor ones in between.

The Insider Program is a bit of a "use at your own risk" proposition if you want OS previews. But I learned the hardware that there can be pitfalls to it, especially the fast ring. My advice is to avoid enrolling in the Windows Insider rings until you are comfortable enough to undo what may be done :)

Use disc clean up after all the updates are done to remove temporary files and old versions of Windows. It should recover some of your hard disk space. Use the 30 days to get a feel for how much space you are using and might need as well. As you mentioned you can add up to a 512GB microSD card. That will, of course, be slower storage than the SSD, but it works fine for storing things that just need to be loaded and then re-saved. I store a lot of things such as large PDF's that I only need infrequent access to.

Yes I saw that one, however I decided to go with the 256 SSD as 128 didn’t seem that much. Microsoft have got some really great deals on, the great thing about them as well is that these deals are available at Amazon, John Lewis, PC World and other third party’s, the only reason I didn’t order one from Microsoft direct was because of the 2 year warranty that comes with it from John Lewis.

You got a great deal! You're going to love that device.

One Drive as well can store things like documents and pictures if I’m correct? I might get a subscription to Office 365.

Are major updates free? I know Microsoft use to charge for their OS updates to big numbers like 7 and so on. I’m sure I’ll figure a lot of things out when I get my hands on it Sunday :)

I’m hoping that it can replace my iPad Pro but also the 2011 MacBook Pro that I had, being able to have just the one device would be great!

  • Windows Defender is on by default. There is a separate security tab in Windows settings where you can setup Defender and other security parameters.
  • A full Windows installation (including updates) is around 20-30 GB. Your 256 SSD will be fine ;). Plenty of room to install other programs (like Office etc.)
  • One Drive can store all files you want. If you get a subscription to Office 365 you will get 1 TB of One Drive space. One Drive simply presents itself as a folder. All files you drag into that folder are synchronized with One Drive.
  • All major updates and future updates are free. Microsoft announced there will never be a newer version than Windows 10. Of course your Windows license is tied to your hardware. If you buy a new computer you also buy a new Windows license.
  • You can extend storage space with a micro SD card, but you can of course also attach external usb drives to your computer.
When you start up your Surface for the first time give it time to install all updates (it will do so automatically).
Also give yourself some time to adjust to another OS :). Some things are in different places than you are used to. Google is your best friend!

That's all I can think of for now.
Keep us posted!

Correct and you can get a free 1-month trial, so it is a good idea to try the trial out concurrently with your new Surface.

The OneDrive subscription with Office 365 is 1TB per user (up to 6 users) and there are also additional OneNote features and a few other benefits. The Apps, of course, can be used on any other computers, phones, tablets you have.

My wife and I have the 365 home subscription.

Thank you, that’s very helpful :) I didn’t know that they were going to stick with Windows 10, I thought there might be a Windows 11 at some point, it’s great that they won’t charge for major updates.

Really looking forward to my Surface Pro 6 arriving on Sunday, I will certainly be testing it out a lot once it arrives :)

Thanks. I did not know that! (Probably because I never use the native video player o_O).

Is a relatively new feature, native players a little limited in it's file options, but getting better. Certainly plays MP4 & MKV seamlessly :)

The PIP is fully scalable, one can simply place it where it works best :)

My wife won't touch that gold either. I mentioned to her that the Apple Watch now comes in a 3rd color choice and she asks "It isn't that awful gold color is it?" :)

Apple should get back into having some fun with colors. It has been boring design since they stopped coming out with annual iPod nano/shuffle colors. Maybe I am in the minority, but not only would I seriously consider black or red metallic, but I would give some serious thought to an orange or purple metallic computer. Black/Gray have all become so dull and ubiquitous.

Actually I would buy that limited edition Mercury White Razer color over Apples Gold at the drop of a hat too.

So did you actually win the Wacom Cintique? Or you don't know yet?

iPad mini-pro 4" with pen support. Take my money! Small enough to be a proper "companion device," and would do what I need for a "companion device." Take my money! :)

Definitely, no reason why notebooks can't be vivid and exciting  as opposed to being plain, dull and boring.

Admittedly I re-role gaming notebook's as portable workstations, when bored will happily turn on the light show :p The stark reality is no one remotely cares how your notebook looks. What they care about is your output & delivery, so why not enjoy what you like :)

Apple is now too scared to change the mix, so plays safe with dull & boring. I'll pick up a new Huawei Mate 20 Pro soon, it's got to be Emerald Green or Twilight

SP6 Black all the way  Apple, nothing exciting in the design language these days, all been sucked our of it in the name of being "ever thinner"

I approve of your PIP! :p Oh man an emerald green phone!:D

Great info here as always.

Finally dusted off my Acer and fired it up again last night. I realize I am so used to either desktop or tablet, laptops aren’t my thing. I’ll continue to use the Acer as I want to get more acclimated with W10. The system update check and updates hang terribly on this laptop (checking/preparing for updates), so I won’t hold that against Windows. It could very well be the hardware.

Makes me think I’ll probably try a SP first. Unless someone kindly leaves a SS2 at my door.

100/100 :) admittedly a little contrived on my part :p Never the less superb "if" you can get into Possession; a wild ride, not for the faint of heart or those lacking imagination. Safe to say Andrzej Zulawski vision isn't for everyone. Might watch Dagon later, A Bay of Blood or kick it up a notch with The Mountain of the Cannibal God :eek:o_O:p more likely down a notch :p

Emerald Green is calling out to me, new P20 Pro looks amazing IRL, both my Mate 10 & Mate 10 Pro have been really solid phones that have been hammered. Mate 10 has easily taken over 30K pictures  The Emerald Green P20 Pro looks and performs superbly, I don't need to replace my Midnight Blue Mate 10 Pro, equally HK beckons...

Next Surface will be a 128 Go or a Black 256 SP6, still mulling it over, hoping the Retina MacBook will commit Seppuku to ease my decision :p I'm back on my primary engineering project up country in Malaysia, so no shortage of computing power here, as have my trusty 32Gb Hex Core Abacus with it's accompanying GTX 1070 with me :p

Okay, Surface mobile device question (in relation to my Acer laptop).

Do the Surface tell you (like iPads) before they shut down due to critically low battery?

I thought I killed the Acer laptop for a moment. :p It just shut down and didn't give any warning that the battery was that low. If I get 6 hours on it with the maximum battery saving settings that is a lot.

Granted, the Acer hasn't been used, much less charged in months, so I suppose this should happen. As mentioned, I know about the battery saver settings in W10, but ignored it this time because the Acer display becomes much dimmer with the battery savings turned on. When writing on that particular machine, I need that sucker bright because the nits are closer to nitwits than brightness. Besides screen clarity, keyboard and brightness, battery life is the other reason why I skip laptops.

@Queen6 a bit of graphic Bava or Martino never hurts. I saw Possession once many years ago, my memory is fudgy, but quite a good film from what I remember. Thumbs up on whatever you watch tonight.

Windows 10 does have a configurable battery saver mode. Much like the iPad/iPhone, the default is 20% and Windows will limit background activity when active. It will also alert you by displaying a notification on the screen when it reaches 10% At 7% it will warn that is critically low and suggest that you save your files. At about 5% it should ask to go into hibernation mode.

This sounds familiar, but the Acer did not do any of that this time, it just shut down. I won’t worry about it unless it keeps happening (regardless if I tinker with the settings or not). Thanks.:)

Update: My Surface Pro 6 arrived a couple of hours ago :) I have set it up and here are my initial thoughts:

1. Windows Hello is VERY fast, it logs me back in within a second or less. It was also very easy to set up.

2. I love the display, I don't know how they do it but it looks great, I don't know if it's what Apple would call "retina display" BUT it's much better than the screen resolution on my old 2011 MBP.

3. The hardware is very sturdy and feels really well made. The kickstand is great at different angles, at first I was a little worried that it would be flimsy and break if I moved it into different angles.

4. Windows doesn't seem as bad as I remember  it's initially very snappy and even opening multiple apps or windows is great.

Obviously it's very early days, but so far I'm impressed :) I really hope it continues this way!

For those who are switching from Mac OS & iPad like I have, and wish to give Microsoft’s Edge browser a chance, I recommend exploring the tips page. It helped me quite a bit and I learned how to do screenshots and markup (and sharing) within the browser. No need to fire up another app to edit or share. Pretty handy. Faster than iOS even.

I also have been using the Edge browser and OneDrive on my iPhone. The combination basically remedies the integration that you might miss from being away from the Apple ecosystem.

13-inch MBP models have a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel resolution at 227 pixels per inch

Surface Book Pro 6 has a resolution of 2736 pixels by 1824 pixels at a PPI of 267 pixels per inch.

It’s actually higher resolution and PPI than what Apple terms “retina.” :)

The tips page is very helpful for a number of different things, I'm switching from iPad and so there is a learning curve, at the moment it doesn't seem to be bad, I'm picking up more things the more I explore.

Now the iPad Pro has a larger screen at 12.9 vs 12.3 and a resolution of 2732 x 2048 and a PPI of 264. The iPP and SP6 are pretty even in that regard

Maybe because it's new but the Surface Pro 6 seems to have a better screen, maybe my eyes need to adjust or something. So far I've had this Surface half a day.
