Apple, it's time to step up to the plate.......

They won't, because they prefer having consumers thinking they need a consumption device and a work device, this way you buy 2 of their products instead of one. For Apple "stepping up to the plate" means they will offer split window multitasking on the new ipad via 1991 and call it an innovation, lol.

Can you put Linux on it?

You can probably put OSx on it, I'm sure Linux wouldn't be an issue. The SP2 was able to be hackintoshed, don't see why this one wouldn't. In fact I have done this before on a desktop and I'll try it again on the SP3 when I get it.

I think this thing is absolutely amazing. Hope they can continue their trend and get more developers on board for the Windows Store side of things.

The more I look at the specs and see this in action, the more I'm being tempted.

My company offers to pay 50% of my computer purchases, so it would only run me 500 bucks - I may be enticed to grab one for that. If I do, it will most likely be a replacement for my laptop. Tbh, I'm not sure If I'm ready to replace my rMBP

I have a couple of concerns about the device. It does look awesome enough. However, the fact that they are leaving wacom for N trig (something that I have heard bad things about) is a bit confusing. Also, Isn't it possible that Intel will have broadwell out in six months time meaning that Microsoft could update this device to a surface pro 4, and make this item obsolete in no time flat? I don't get why Microsoft and Intel don't line up their product lines together especially since they're so intertwined with eachother as companies.

Did they mention anything about improved battery life also?

The N-trig is getting very good reviews in all the reviews out there. I'm also a bit bummed, but seeing the reviews and having faith that MS truly understands the importance of writing have me more calmed down. You can see just how hard they are pushing the writing experience, I'm sure they made it perfect.

There could be a sp4 with broadwell, but I don't think it would make the sp3 obsolete unless you needed bleeding edge hardware. I agree though it would have been nice for MS and Intel to be on the same page.

I wondered why MS released this now with Haswell and not waiting for Broadwell. Perhaps they were expecting Intel to have the Broadwell chipsets ready by now.

I can see this handling 80% of my needs since I'm in windows for work and I'm using RDP to access servers and running Office.

I think the wife will kill me thought :D

That's a guess. Maybe also to keep cost down.

My wife wouldn't mind if I jumped on one, but I already have way too many tablets and notebooks. I'd feel the need to get rid of 3 or 4 before getting one. But the SP3 is VERY tempting.

I said the same thing about the Ivy Bridge version. At this point, you're just going to keep waiting for the next "better, mobile chip" from Intel and not get to use the product now. Believe me Intel is going to have a better mobile chip. They're focusing on mobile power and their IGPs.

I have been wanting to replace my Macbook and now it's almost 7 years old.

I've never considered a Surface as I have been an iPad fan and have owned every version of it up until currently.

In my job I am finding it harder and harder to get tasks done with the lack of programs I cant access as easily as I would on a Surface.

I balk though at the price of the Surface 3 and the added cost of having to add the Office Suite.

Is the 2 a capable device and can we expect a price cut on that version with this new announcement?

Though the 3 looks amazing and very tempting.

Another concern I have is the 4gigs of ram for the entry level I5 version. Seems to me this tablet/laptop should last me 3-4 years and I am concerned that 4 gigs will become insufficient fairly soon.

Slow clap for Microsoft. Absolutely amazing device. I went in wanting a Surface 2 (RT) but I'll think I'll buy the i5/4/128 pretty much for the writing features.

Overpriced, but cheaper than the highest end iPad and a MacBook Pro combined! I'd actually consider pulling the trigger on one of these if the price was right. I need to upgrade my iPad 3 anyway.

A point I think people are missing. Considering this is a convergence endeavor, it will replace, in theory, an iPad and Macbook Air on the low end. That's not a bad deal by any means.

Surface Pro 3, i5, 128gb
$999.00 + keyboard = a hell of a lot less than a Macbook Air i5 + iPad Air.

And I actually think the SP3 can pull it off. The 3:2 HD display is far more conducive to being a tablet and laptop than the old 16:9, 10" display from previous generations.

Have the Surface Pro's come with a SD card slot? That would be a bonus to be able to add more space like i have on my Yoga 11S.

Listed ports

Full-size USB 3.0
microSD™ card reader
Headset jack
Mini DisplayPort
Cover port

I think the hardware is very nice, I just do not like Windows. I much prefer OS X or a nice Linux distro. I'm sure its not too hard to put Linux on one of these, I might consider getting one and running Linux on it.

My earlier comment about this being overpriced was based on it's potential sales.

However, this really looks good. For Office, the 12" screen is nice. So far, I haven't read or seen reviews on it or the pen (busy). On the surface (no pun intended), it looks like a replacement for my Thinkpad X220 (I would miss the great keyboard :().

A few years ago, Dell had a windows tablet (not like today's tablets) that used N-trig and it didn't turn out so well. So, I, like a previous poster, have a lot of concerns.

Hopefully, this version really is as good as it seems (when the 1st version was intro'd, I remember the enthusiasm and that didn't turn out like I thought).

I am VERY sceptical towards the n-trig pen.

As a professional industrial designer, the surface pro was always a very intriguing concept, due to the WACOM digitizer, which has always been the gold standard for the creative industry.

I dont know much about the n-trig, but what Ive heard so far, is that it is half baked at best.

The Surface Pro 3 would have been a 100% buy for me. Now I am not so sure anymore. I am thinking about buying a surface pro 2 when they become cheap.

Nice commercial of the 3.

Man that commercial is awesome. Whoever did that TOTALLY nailed it, I love the music and everything.

So the good news is the SP3 fixes almost every single gripe I have about my sp1; I thought the screen was too small, the black paint sucked, and everyone thought the tablet was too thick and heavy.

And then they come out with that. BRAVO!

Only two things I see as a potential problem: there's still no thunderbolt, and apparently the stylus isn't the same? Aw that was a great stylus.

Not perfect though, it always seems off by a tiny bit.
