The Pro will be in the ballpark of $1000. I don't think we're comparing that and the iPad.

I was not comparing it to the iPad. One could not as they are or will be in different classes. BUT, it is MY Holy Grail in what I am looking for for use in the field. From my point of view the business world STILL runs on MS Office.

Do not get me wrong as I love my iPad. I just want a little more freedom and being with Apple for a very long time, the one thing I do know is that Apple is always going to keep their products on a short leash. This will not bother many but it does me.

If I was going to spend $499 on a tablet, I would go for the Surface RT. Although the iPad has a more thriving app ecosystem right now, the Surface has the potential to be more capable in the long run (even at launch it's very compelling--Office!)

But since I don't intend to spend that much money on a tablet, I've got my money saved for the iPad mini. :p

1) Type cover (with trackpad)
The type cover is a huge deal, but I'm glad you mentioned the trackpad because that is exactly what puts Microsofts design over the top.

Apple users tend to be so quick to crap on anything that isnt offered in the Apple ecosystem and when talking about iPad/MacBook efficiency then one of those overlooked items is the OPTION for multiple input devices. Its not Touchscreen OR Trackpad, its Touchscreen AND Trackpad. Whenever I try making business level spreadsheets with Numbers.app or typing long form with Pages.app then the lack of a trackpad is crippling and is something no add-on iPad keyboard can deliver.

Some tasks are made for touch and some are best with a trackpad so having both is a huge benefit for end users.

Right now I stay within Apple Eco System. Too much spend to jump ship. Too many apps i got used to. But I'm not rejecting the idea to get a Surface in addition.
If MS make the integration with Win8/RT, Windows Server and enterprise environment right they will have a good chance to get some fair share from iPad.

We are in a weird world. I don't think the Surface is going to be a knock out hit, but I am glad it's there, because it is somewhat original. I give Microsoft alot of credit for going ad doing their thing, and not stealing from iOS like the scum bag android developers.

I'm really excited by Surface. I've pre-ordered one to play with and if it's any good I'll keep it. Windows 8 definitely looks to be a better touch OS than for traditional desktops and laptop input devices.

iPad is now the safe, dependable choice for a lot of people with an established ecosystem. I'll still be using iOS extensively, but I do like to experiment and have fun with new technologies.

I considered pre-ordering, but found that there is no refund if I decide not to keep it. Did you manage to place a pre-order with a guaranteed refund, or do you plan to sell it if you decide not to keep it?

MicrosoftStore.com offers a 14 day return policy with full refund where I'm buying.

When you get a chance check it out in person. Reviewers have mentioned it really looks better than the retina on iPad even with the lower res. Ill reserve my judgment till I can see for real.

I will definitely check it out but I really doubt it will look anywhere near as good as the retina iPad display let alone better.

The Surface, just like all new electronic products sold here in the U.S., will definitely have at least a 14 day return period.

Weird. Can't find the page now that I landed on yesterday that said no refunds.

Well, that's good news, maybe I'll preorder after all. Or maybe I'll get it from a local Microsoft store? The refund/return policy page I'm looking at now says returns and exchanges have to be made at the store I buy it at, so if I buy online, I have to return online. This is sure easier with Apple, where I can buy online but return to an Apple store!
