I think it would mostly be taste and nostalgia. I like the lack of notch, the silver keyboard surround, and the aesthetics of the smallest model

It is true though that, while it is a great laptop, the other models offer more

people honestly don’t really know why this model still exists. I wonder why the 15” MBP doesn’t, as it would only be as confusing as the 13” MBP

I would be so curious to know how many generations this model will be around for. will M3 be the last of this design?

I wouldn’t, I’d rather have the additional storage space with the MBA.

You also haven’t given any context into what you daily workload looks like.
Futureproofing, currently i think i wouldnt care much about sustained workloads,

In the future i can see myself gaming on it, or doing video editing, also the extra battery life seems nice.

Regarding storage space vs screen size, would you go for the 15" MBA 256 instead of the 13" MBA 512? They are also both the same price.

OP:

Those two models aren't directly comparable because of the SSD sizes.

If you're going to be using this as your "main computer", you need MORE THAN 256gb of SSD.

Having said that, I would prefer the MBPro over the MBair.
Reason:
More ports, internal cooling fan.

In fact, the one I think you SHOULD be looking at is the MBPro 14" ...

if you're going to game def get the mbp, mba with no internal fan throttles within a minute under heavy load.

I'd go with the Air. TouchBar is garbage, passive cooling on the Air isn't bad, the wedge design is better, portability is better and the 512gb SSD on the air outperforms the 256gb on the pro. Although this isn't critical, it's still 2x the storage.

The MBP is a much better product IMO.
In reality it’s probably about even. Smaller screen, inferior camera, heavier weight, no function row… but better battery life, a fan, and better speakers.

Edit: forgot about MagSafe - MBP 13” doesn’t have it! That’d be my dealbreaker if considering the two.

Unless you need the Touch Bar, I can't see why anyone wouldn't want the MBA with the 'better' form factor. The fan is pointless. If you're really that concerned about thermal throttling, you'd be using a 14" or 16" MacBook Pro anyway.

We disagree.
- Touchbar is not garbage. It is simply a feature that most do not prefer, and some prefer a lot. But not garbage.
- Agreed passive cooling on the Air isn't bad - - as long as one never drives Apple's lowest end laptop hard for some reason like gaming or processing imagery. Then the MBA throttles to control heat. Personally I always prefer a box less likely to throttle, making this a no-contest comparison that the MBP wins.

The reason why the 13" MBP exists is Zoom. During The Covid Times, Airs would boil during Zoom calls, while the 13" Pro would simply helicopter through. As a result, three years later people think "oh no, Air won't be enough, I need the 13" Pro to call Susan from accounting."

As I do not owe or use any of both models you stated I just can state my (very personal) general opinion:

- A 256 GB SSD would be simply too small for me, no matter what laptop.
- Being used to at least a 14" display over years, or even bigger external screens, for different type of work, I now simply feel too limited on smaller screens

This was only a problem with Intel Macs, and the last Intel MacBook Airs were not good performers. Now, when I tell my users that the Air has no fans and won’t make any noise when they’re doing Zoom or Teams meetings, they’re thrilled.

I use my Touch Bar everyday.

OP literally said hes going to be gaming on it so a fan is more of a requirement than a necessity.
