It‘s essentially the same motion since like forever (expect control center). On iphone X it‘s move thumb down, then move thumb back up, while briefly swiping the screen. On other iPhones it‘s move thumb down, press a button, then move thumb back up.;)

No need the defense?

I was just saying that home button it's necessary outdated being that so many people upgraded to 8 instead of X "just for the home button and Touch ID"
Apple seems to think the home button is a thing of the past considering the next line up of phones won’t have a home button. SE2 could be the only new phone to have one, if they even make it...

There was a time in the not too distant past where the vast majority of posters on MR lamented the infernal, space wasting home button that should be confined to the waste bin of user interfaces along with the hideous gigantic bezels that took up so much valuable real estate for no apparent reason.

Enter the X with no home button and a notch and people lose their minds.
Now the home button is essential to the usability of the iPhone and it is crippled without one.
And the cries to have a top bezel instead of the notch are deafening.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, many of us are happily using the X

I don't mind the swiping up gesture, but when it comes to closing apps, now thats annoying!

Swipe up and hold to enter the multitasking view, then hold on a screen for a second before swiping up to close the app. That doesn't seem very 'natural'.
Why cant we swipe up and hold to enter multitasking view, and then just swipe up on screens to close the app, rather then having to hold first?!

Speak for your self, and you don't speak for majority? There are still a lot people who don't like X swipe gesture and can't give up Home button and happily upgraded to 8 Plus (including myself)

Apple has a way of forcing their customers to give up old but comfortable features a little sooner than many of them are ready to. I don’t see Apple getting rid of the home button in all models, but I think this Fall or next the high end iPhones and iPads will all have the home button replaced with the home bar. They will likely offer less expensive models that keep the iconic home button... at least for another device generation or two. Apple knows that they can force power users to give up the home button, but it would be a challenge for iPhone users who barely know how to use their current iPhones. For those users the home button offers an easy out whenever they get lost in the interface. There may also be a cost associated with the dot projector that makes it cheaper to build less expensive models with the home button... at least for now.

There is a part of me that has some nostalgia for the home button I’ve been using since the iPhone 3G, but I honestly don’t miss using it. I really do think the new way is a step forward... at least in terms of speed. Perhaps the trade off is the ease of use that the home button offers to those who don’t know the gestures.

I’m generally loving the X, but yes the swiping up to unlock is annoying me. No need for it. If the phone is happy it’s me then just take me to the home screen without having to swipe up.

Kind of the same thing with closing apps - what’s with the need for the extra step? Swipe up and hold. BOOM, that should instantly give you the option to close or open apps, without the added step of having to long-press on the screen? I love the X, but these things need sorting. Thankfully, they can easily be sorted in software.

The Auto Unlock to home screen should be a configuration item in the settings. I like that I still need to swipe up to go to home screen, because sometimes I just want to see notifications.

The requirement to hold before you can swipe away apps in the switcher is annoying. I really can’t see what problem that change solved. We’re people accidentally swiping away apps?

In a Way, the home button is a thing of the past, since it’s been around 10 years. It’s also one less piece of hardware that the iPhone needs to incorporate, which also lessons for repairs for Apple other technical issues that could occur.

Swipe up, hold and long press gives the user a final few seconds to affirm that he or she does want to close the app. I think it is a good feature.

I found it a bit much at first, but now I don't even notice
Some things are just different and take a little getting used to, and then they are just normal to me

That is true.

Many people expect a design and performance change from Apple in regards to the OS. And when it happens, they complain that Apple should have left certain features alone. Apple can't please everyone.

I also think there is a smaller subgroup to the aforementioned, who look and find fault in the most trivial things. And where there wasn't a problem before using same muscles and movement, there is now with the new OS. And before you know it, there are multiple people chiming in in agreement. The result, in some ways, is akin to mass hysteria.

I have seen this pop up on the forum time and time again.

That’s why they still will sell the SE. The 3 new models coming this fall won’t have the home button.

I can well imagine if iPhones never had a home button and were always swipe/gestures and Face ID... if Apple introduced a home button and Touch ID the same people would be screaming about how it was so unnecessary, a step back in technology and the home button used valuable real estate and created bezels. The forums would be filled with threads vilifying Apple for their archaic design, and how Steve never would have allowed a home button and such.

Strange how that can happen, isn’t it? How when new features introduced, it makes previous features like the home button feel outdated and antiquated. Gesture controls will easily expand beyond the iPhone and into the iPad. And as much as Apple markets the iPad, they both share a similar interface for functionality.

there is really no reason, other than apple says so, why the phones with the home button can't have the new gestures as well

I’ve thought this exact same thing while reading these forums.
Complainers like to complain.

I'm particularly content with all the swiping gestures on the iPhone X. I particularly like swipe up to exit an app but have it playing in the background.

I could be in the Play Music app, swipe up then open news or any other app. The only thing I might change is the halfway swipe where you swipe and pause until you see the red strip at the top left corner; I think I would make this kill the app instead of offering the choice whether to kill it or not. I know it only takes milliseconds but it is the one thing I'd change.

I like seeing the padlock open, too - visual confirmation that the phone is unlocked.

That’s my thoughts. If the iPhone SE is not updated in the spring, then it likely won’t be updated in the fall, which I believe Apple retain the SE in their lineup for one more year, alongside the new 6.1/5.8/6.5 iPhones.

Man, I am getting keystroke fatigue on my laptop.... I mean come on people.
This is actually a great example, even though you meant it as a troll. There are good keyboards and there are bad ones. Bad ones have little key travel, feel mushy, and are generally unsatisfying. Good ones feel nice, have a good click, and make the experience more enjoyable. That's my point with the "swipe up" gesture. The lack of any kind of click or feedback, as compared to a button press, makes it simply unsatisfying. Apple went out of their way to use the taptic engine on home buttons in recent years for exactly this reason, and that is lost with the X.

Swipw up and to the right, like you're making a half square and it will instantly open the multi-task, much quicker and easier than holding. Also the "X" is AWFUL! I hate the swipes, I need my headphone jack, and I need bezels!!! My hand comes into contact with the side of the phone and makes it impossible to scroll! This reminds me of the MacBook with the stupidly big track pad! Like wtf dude! Not to me mention the notch! Dear God the north is awful!! Why not just extend the bezel down a little? I also hate iOS11! It is actually disgusting! I want to upgrade my aging iPhone 6s+ running iOS9, but I can't! Apple has officially failed me.

Thank you, your post made my day.
Everything you hate I love.
