I am generally happy with Apple's notebooks but there are considerable advantages to building your own desktops in that you can select the parts, design of the case, cooling, storage and RAM with more flexibility and, often lower costs, than you can with Apple.

And then you can Hackintosh it and have a really sick rig and macOS at the same time!

You can use Virtual Machines as well. Virtual Machines are generally easier to do from my perspective though I haven't tried OpenCore yet.

He has contacted the local store about the changed configuration on the return. I'll update the discussion when he has gotten back a 16GB M1 Mini.

Apple shows a lead time of about a month for the 16GB/1TB config. I hope they have stock set aside for warranty replacement.

There's a 16/2 in the Refurbished Store right now. They could deliver it by Tuesday. Would be a nice gift for his inconvenience.
