Holy crap are you serious? Why would they cheap out on something like this? The bundled lightning cables have always been usable for both power and data transfer. And USB-C is definitely capable of doing both. Did they seriously ship a power delivery only USB-C cable with their new iPads?
OP's Mac has no USB-C ports.

While at the Apple Store for my technical appointment, we tried a lightening cable, then there was an error, lighting is not supported with this iPad. Then the Apple guy said...oh yeah...the new one's do not support lightning. lightning is no longer supported on the new iPad pros.

Just tested syncing with the USB-C cable provided in the box, attached to new iPad and Thunderbolt port on my 2017 iMac. Worked perfectly.

Good, I was gonna say...

That’s irrelevant to what he said though.

I never said that, I was replying to dude who said that the USB-C cable that comes with the new iPad does not support data transfer, only power for charging.

Did you try my suggestion regarding disabling any Third Party Security/AntiVirus software as per my edited previous post? It did work for me when iTunes was unable to see/sync my iPad Mini.

I don't have any third party Security or AntiVirus on my Mac. Isn't FireValut an Apple Product? That shows up in Security and Privacy as turned on

Try turning it off. Quit iTunes, and unplug iPad from cable. Reload iTunes, with FileVault still disabled; reconnect iPad w/ cable, and see if iTunes sees/shows the iPad icon. When the problem happened with my Mini, had to disable FileVault as well. My apologies for not mentioning this before. Can go into more detail as to why I think this worked.

I'll try it. Oh wow.....2 hours remaining to decrypt before I can save that change to turn it off.

Oh no.....now it says 4 hours remaining.

It's not a serious issue. Connect the iPad to the MacBook with the appropriate cable and do the same things you did before. Your problem is almost certainly that you don't have the right cable. You'll need a USB-C to USB-A adapter for the MacBook end, and a USB-C data cable to connect that to the iPad. The cable that comes with your iPad won't work because it's not a data cable--it's for power only. Yes it can be confusing, but stay calm and it'll all work out.

It’s not a data cable? How on Earth is that? With a $999 device???? What if I need to restore it? Unbelievable.

Aaargh! Have one more thing, if you want to try it. I remember this going back again to the problems with my iPad Mini iTunes sync. In System Prefs, Security, turn OFF Firewall. Restart Mac, reconnect new iPad, open iTunes and check the result.
