As one already said, you need space behind the speakers (air) to make them sound better. Supposedly the MBP speakers are to be better than the PB speakers. Are they??? I think not.

What the heck, buy a nice set of head phones if you want sound. On the other hand, there are laptops with pretty good sound, it's just that they are packed into a larger formfactor...

My friend just got the latest rev. MBP and the speakers on my 5 year old IBM Thinkpad sound better than his...

It seems, that APPLE STILL has not been able to solve many quality issues. According to a recent survey 30 (THIRTY!!!) % of the owners of new MBs or MBPs have problems, and that is not counting those who think whatever issue they might have is not really one....
This is way to high a percentage of production output with problems. It actually proves unprofessionality on the part of APPLE QC.
Umm that also includes the geniouses who think they have a problem but dont also if you have 10 friends who own a MacBook and 3 say theirs is the devil well that isnt 30%, umm and a link to these magical numbers would be nice, preferbly not a blog.

Our MB speakers are fine for quality, just very quiet. They are hardly useful for anything but system beeps.

The poll taken was right here on MacRumors. Even if the number was 20%, that is still one fifth of all the buyers spending hard-earned money for what... lemons.
It is not enough to have a very good OS. I have seen many problems with Mac Hardware, which I never in 15 years had with IBMs or TOSHIBAs... and of course WIN OS cannot compete with APPLE OSX.

And true, polls are never absolutely representative, but remember that not everybody having a problem may actually identify it as such.

Sorry but i find that really hard to believe... remember that surveys mean next to nothing unless they are done in a relatively scientific way i.e. unbiased (i.e.) random sample base, large enough sample base... and clearly defined parameters i.e. what constitutes a 'problem'. I've had windows BSOD a few times does that count... heh:rolleyes: well u know that i mean

The poll was right here on MacRumors. I did mot copy it, and can't find it anymore. Probably someone found it to be too revealing....:p

Remember that the demographics made up of people who visit macrumors isn't representative. It's made up mostly of people who seek answers to problems with their macs, people who are very into apple as a company and people who have been sucked in by the community after they came to get help.

I have had my black macbook for less than a week. The speakers, already, sound aweful. Even the little going online and IM noises from iChat sound tinny, distorted, and just plain awful.

Take it back? or...thats just how they are?

I would take it back.

I personally like the things how they were meant to be.

And my 12'' PB speakers do a great job! (Still looking for a descent set of speakers, probably Klipsch Promedia 2.1)

Can we not include Toshiba hardware in the same breath as Apple Hardware, I have no problem with Lenevo though they make some really great PC's probably the only PC laptop I would buy, any my deal with Toshiba is that I spent about 2 months getting them to send me 3 batteries before they finally realized the Comp was the problem took that back and that took another 2 weeks to get back, not had a good experience with those F yes they got an F from Consumer Reports or something for their Laptops...

For goodness sake what do you want for the money??? The speakers in the MacBook are adequate enough for their intended purpose. The MacBook is not a replacement entertainment unit. Comparing them to any other computer like a Powerbook is moot. If you don't like the way they sound plug them into an external set and when you're out an about use your iPod earphones (it sounds just as good as your iPod).
