There are aftermarket accessories on eBay that enclose the shuffle so it doesn't get wet. It's basically a small thin plastic case with a gasket that clasps shut on the Shuffle and headphones creating a seal. The case itself has a clip too

Thanks Medic. I will take a look in the Apple store as well to see what they have as well.

sure, glad i could help

what color did you get?

i thought the shuffle was useless but now that it can have multiple playlists and the ability to navigate between playlists it becomes a great little device. basically i have a playlist for each type of workout music

Rock
R&B Rap
Alternative Rock
Remixes

whatever i'm in the mood for, i go to the playlist and activate shuffle. whenever i sync my iPod Shuffle it auto-loads the Shuffle from those specific playlists too (which grow as i add more and more music). i don't have to worry about running out of space as again, it just auto-loads it up randomly.

Apple wasn't the first to offer a mp3 player without a screen, but they were the first who made it work right due to the stellar software integration (iTunes).

Hello Medic.

Thanks, I am seriously looking in to the 2GB Shuffle now! I just hope 2GB can hold enough songs for a half marathon, about 2 hours?

How does the Shuffle deal with sweat? From what I have read, not very well!

Ian

I have a 2gb shuffle and it will fit at least 10 albums on it, to be honest you'll never play through every song on it whilst running, its plenty big enough.

I've never had problems with sweat and my shuffle has got sweaty and wet plenty of times. I think mine is a 2nd gen shuffle (the first clip one). Given how cheap they are I just figured i'd just by another one if it broke.

nice nice, i have a 2nd gen one too (in green) but only 1GB. i wish i had the 4th gen though b/c then i could auto-sync multiple playlists and cycle through playlists. oh well.

a family member gave me their iPod Nano 6th gen since he got the 7th gen, so i've actually been using the Nano for running

Mine was slate (black), same colour as my iPod Classic.

All my playlists already are organised by genre so you are saying that I can make a playlist on the shuffle which randomly fills it with music? Also, please be honest, after my issues with the Classic (old one dying, current one Play/Pause button not working - in service), I am extremely paranoid now about getting this Shuffle wet from sweat, is a protective case recommended?

Thanks again.

Ian

what i was saying is that in the Settings of the iPod Shuffle (when it's docked), you can set it so it autofills from specified playlists. so what it does is it fills up the entire shuffle with songs from those specified playlists. so while you're running you could be shuffling songs within the Rock playlist but say you want to switch to your Remix playlist, you can switch over and start shuffling within the Remix playlist. say you want to just shuffle between ALL songs - that's possible too. it's a great little device and despite it not having a screen, what enables it is the software integration with iTunes

as far as if you need a protective case - i've been running with my iPod Shuffle 2G since i bought it and it still works. so my guess is no. i would skip the case and see what happens. if it breaks, you have 1 year from the purchase date to take it back and they won't know why it broke and will just give you a new one. it's not like the iPhone where they have moisture sensors since to Apple, the Shuffle is a throwaway device

Thanks again Medic, the autofill makes a lot of sense now so I will use that. I will try without a case to start with. I have a fanny pack so I will try to clip it to that and just hope it does not get wet.

This is my fanny pack, I was hoping I could clip the Shuffle on to it?

sure, that will clip very easily

not sure how tall you are (torso wise) but you might run into a headphone cord length problem. i think they included a longer headphone cord with the 4th gen shuffle though

but you prob have your own ear buds anyways

i have a 2nd gen Shuffle and the cord is a tad short if i clip it to my waist band

Another thing I thought of was getting Shuffle as a watch to wear on my wrist whilst running, would that also give headphone length issues?

Thanks.

Ian

Sounds good enough then! I will try that.

Thanks again for all your input, and to everyone else too.

Ian

If you have an iphone 3gs or later, you could just use your iphone. If you downloaded the free nike+ running app (there are lots of others too eg Runkeeper, Endomodo, etc), you could then log your times, distance, pace, calories burned, map your route (and its elevations) and play music at the same time. There are many armbands for iphones.

... and if you got hit by a car, you could phone for help.

Thanks for that Obi Wan :)

My Shuffle arrived yesterday so I will take it for its first run tomorrrow!

Head phone cable wouldn't be an issue. The length in theory should be shorter then even having the device in your pocket. I wear my nano as a watch all the time and listen to music. No big deal. I run the cord up my sleeve and out the neck. So if the shuffel was like cliped to an armband no problem. Anyway good luck. And so far seems like every one is giving you some pretty good tips.

Thanks very much for the input. I wonder now how long it will take before I get my iPod Classic back? I thought replacing the clickwheel (due to Play/Pause not working) would be a simple job?

As it is right now I will use my Shuffle for running and clip it to my waistband or something. I had no idea just how tiny they were!

iPod Classic

it could be the hard drive....

iPod Classics have hard drives NOT flash drives. And when u shake it sometimes it damages the drive

Hello Mike.

Yes, I have learnt the hard way to not take the Classic running with me because a) it gets wet from sweat and b) it bounces around and shakes which, as you have mentioned, is not good for the hard drive. Hopefully, once it gets fixed, I will just leave the Classic at home and possibly buy a dock for it with speakers to listen to, right now the Shuffle I bought it what I will use when running.

Thanks again.

Ian

did you get the Shuffle yet? how is it?

i am actually going to buy a 4th gen Shuffle for my blind grandmother. it is the easiest MP3 player to operate and is designed to be operated blindly since there isn't a screen. she likes those PBS Frontline documentaries so what i will be doing is converting the videos to just audio at a low bitrate and then using iTunes to load up the Shuffle with them.

everyone knocks the Shuffle but it has more uses than what some people think is just a device used for exercising. Apple could even make a few tweaks in the 5th gen Shuffle that adds even more function without a screen. they always find a way to do more with less

at $39 on Amazon.com, it can't be beat as the mp3 devices designed for the blind are $300+

Hello Medic.

I got the Shuffle, amazed at just how small it is. I will take it on its first run in a few hours. I like your idea also for your grandmother, that is great too! Only problem I found was, with 2GB, the voiceover files must take up quite some space so I decided to not have this feature and just filled it with music.

i didn't know there were separate VoiceOver files. hmmm. the only thing i wanted VoiceOver for was for navigating the Playlists

i just converted the first PBS Frontline episode. i pulled out the audio and converted it to m4a in FM radio quality (64kbps). a 55 mins episode turned into a 26.4MB audio file. woohoo! what i will probably do now is give her my 2nd gen 1GB shuffle and i will get the new 4th gen one

For my Shuffle, I plugged it in to my Mac, started up iTunes and you have to enable the voiceover feature, then choose a language and it downloads it to the device. I am hoping my Shuffle can survive its first run and not die from getting wet from sweat.

to be safe you could buy those rubber/plastic enclosures on eBay or use a small plastic bag or seran wrap (with an opening just for a headphone plug which is rubber too which would create somewhat of a seal)

if this is clipped on the outside of your waist sack though and not directly against your body, unless sweat is spraying all over the place i don't expect it to get wet

how is the length of the headphones? does it reach?

i was about to buy a product red Shuffle on amazon but then i saw they don't carry the product red - it's only carried at Apple stores. hmmm...now i need to decide if the red color is worth the extra $10 ($39 on Amazon and $49 at Apple). red is my favorite color

red jeep
red klean kanteen
red iphone case
red ipad case
red craftsman tool box
red vibram five fingers

the list goes on...LOL

Hello Medic.

Sorry for the late reply.

My Shuffle survived its first run (10km). Basically, with my fanny pack around my waist, I clipped the Shuffle on to the left side of the fanny pack waistband, just above my hip, and using my own headphones, put the cable underneath my shirt and then over the top in to the Shuffle.

Really enjoyed running with it, hardly noticed it was there to be honest and it gives me less distractions as, with my Classic, I would sometimes skip through songs. With the Shuffle I just have to make sure the songs I take on my runs are what I want to listen to.

My Shuffle, as said, is slate (black), same as my Classic, but I think red looks good too. I really wanted orange (favourite colour) but they did not seem to offer that.

Thanks.

Ian

welcome to the world of running with the Shuffle haha. can you believe you've been missing out all of these years running with the regular iPod?

glad it worked out!

I notice the immediate weight difference and I can focus more on running when I have the Shuffle, no distractions because it has the songs on it that I want to listen to whilst running.
