Wireless charging plus wireless CarPlay is a solid solution.

Looking forward to this day - but until such a future is easily available (I'd say give it 5 years for the majority to start building cars this way) we seem to be a ways away from removing cables completely. I've seen many an article pointing towards Lightning removal next year though from iPhones.

Apple will have to provide some kind of smart connector or make MagSafe data capable as well. There is no way they're going to say you can only connect to the phone wirelessly. Too many points of failure with that approach.

Rumours from credible leakers have stated apple plan to remove the lightning port from one of the 2021 models, presumably the pro max model. I haven't seen any rumour from reputable leakers which state they plan to remove the port from every 2021 iPhone model.

Sure full cordless might sound cool in theory - but the reality is that wireless charging means exactly the opposite - you're now stuck with far less sources to charge up with as USB-B (no, not USB-C) is now super available as a power source. Hop on a plane, in your car, at major travel hubs, etc - yup, you'll more than likely find a USB-B source to charge up with. I'm fine if Lightning remains just requiring a cable.

The other rub is Carplay - many cars now support wired Carplay - and cars have a longer time between replacement. Wireless Carplay is a very small percentage of the cars capable of Carplay today. I'm not replacing my car just for wireless Carplay - that's totally ridiculous.

The reality is that a wire free iPhone would result in one having to carry a whole ton more - if there even exists a solution. At the minimum you have to be sure to have your wireless charger with you at all times, but even then there's still many other problems without solutions. It creates far more problems than it solves... and honestly a bit less battery life cause the port takes up space is a far less evil than not being able to charge up unless I have my wireless charging base/what not with me too.

This is like solving one problem (cutting the cord) and creating 10 more. I thought silliness at Apple died when Johnny left... too much form over function here.

They are going to do it. I'm not sure it is as early next year but its coming. They better have a rock solid, reasonable priced, wireless USB adapter for CarPlay or I agree we will all scream. They HAVE to, I think they know that. There are other issues such as the DJI Osmo Pocket camera I use that plugs into the Lightning port, that will stink. I think we will learn to live with carrying a Magsafe wireless charger because at least you can use the phone with it attached, hopefully the speed further increases because the 15W Magsafe is right now still only charging at half the speed of the 20W lightning cable in some online tests, although obviously it is better than the painful 7.5W rated Qi charging of the past.

Not to mention travel internationally- airplanes hotels. you lose your MagSafes and you are S.O.L.
Ive bought every year and this is the fist time I actually fear their "update".

Wait until wireless charging is more mature.

Every other stand in an airport has Qi chargers, why would this be a problem?

i don't think it will come as early as next year but its coming. remember magsafe is also compatible with Qi charging and they are offering up magsafe tech for 3rd parties to design around with no fee... it is entirely likely that this will drive hotels to put wireless Qi or Qi/Magsafe compatible charging pads in hotels etc. I think wireless charge points will become more common. I do agree it will be a while until portable magsafe hockey puck style chargers on a cord will be common place but i'm sure apple will mointor the adoption and make the switch when it isn't a disaster to do so, but just slightly uncomfortable... then the world will scream and within a few more years the entire world of smartphones including android won't have ports.

It better be not next year. I’m buying a new truck with Apple Car Play and it’s not wireless. I would be pissed spending $35,000 to $45,000 on a truck and then have to get an adapter for wireless.
