Mini #2. Home theater. It's connected to a projector for a 160" diagonal screen. It has an Eye TV Hybrid HD tuner with DVR software connected to a roof top antenna and provides 1080 Dolby Digital. It's also connected to an Onkyo 5.1 surround (DTS and DD) system by Toslink optical cable. It has a 320 gig external firewire drive that has our 5.1 surround-intensive ripped DVDs for playback through Front Row (thus retaining the DD or DTS 5.1 audio). Most of the rest of our movies and TV shows are transcoded to MPEG-4 (H.264, Dolby Pro Logic 5-channel surround) on a 500 gig hard drive served by an AEBSn and also played through Front Row or Quicktime through the Onkyo. It's a kick-@$$ system. Can't wait for the Superbowl. :)

Impressive. My Media Mini only has a hacked Front Row setup with an external hard drive and connected to my SDTV via S-video. Good to read about people who've gone all the way in setting up a real Media Mini. Of course my Mini is a G4 1.42 so I'm not sure about going HD with it. Good stuff.

Mac Mini is great!

Hey all,

I thought that I would chime in on the virtues of the Mac Mini!

Ok...here are my modest specs:
1.5 GHZ PowerPC G4
1GB RAM
ATI 9200 GPU (64 MB VRAM), dedicated graphics chip
80GB Hard Drive
Mac OS X 10.4.11

I do virtually everything on it....web-surfing, email, web design, player (older) games, running Mathematica programs, typesetting mathematics research articles, preparing presentations, etc.

It is rock-solid, reliable, and silent. I don't plan on ever selling/trading mine! It's kind of funny when I hear people bashing the Mac Mini and saying that it is only useful for 'average' users who don't do much with their computers....that is certainly not true in my case....and mine is only a G4. =)

Well? What do y'all have to say about your minis? Give a shout-out, explain what it does for you, tell us all about your setup, etc. I'm really interested in this topic now, because I just ordered my very first new Apple product ever! Which is a mini! Yay!

Thank you! I get so tired of hearing people say the only thing a 1.8 gigahertz dual core Mac mini is good for is web surfing and email. I used to get a lot of graphic design work done on a 16 MEGAhertz Mac. Of course I couldn't do that now because of software bloat but you know what I mean.

Yes. This a actually kinda more like what I meant when I started this thread. Software bloat is atrocious these days, but at least we don't run Windows, ne very thankful for that.
