There are many people who do not know that the Apple Screen Sharing App is not limited to a local network.
Open the screen sharing app, choose "new connection" from the menu and then enter the AppleID of the person you want to connect to. (The other person needs to have "Screen Sharing" enabled and they will receive a prompt to accept or deny the connection.)
It took me 10 years to figure that out... :)
This only works for a different person's mac, and I believe they have to accept the connection. That's maybe fine for OP's purposes, but if I truly want to get back to *my* mac when I (and hopefully no one else) is there, still looking for a simple, free for occasional use, trustworthy solution. RIP actual back to my mac :(

i work with 2 different people on creative projects, where we work together (but over a significant distance). i need to see their screens, and do a lot of the actual work myself (organizing and structuring projects).

teamviewer has been great, but it's so expensive....
Doesn't Apple's native screen sharing work for this? I am "tech support" for an older family member and I often remote into her machine to do stuff for her. I initiate the screen share from within Messages, and then once she accepts the invite, I'm able to see and manipulate everything on her Mac.

sure, but my main client refused to change the way we work. anyway, am using jump desktop these days; inexpensive, and works without issue. thx!
