TenFourFox 45 is Here!

OK, TenFourFox (or is it tenFOUR Fox?) 45 has just been released! It's running much faster on my PowerMac G5, and there isn't any noticeable difference on my iBook G4. It's faster, if anything ! I haven't tried it on my other PowerPC Macs yet. What's your experience with the new TenFourFox? Hopefully it's faster, but it may make some older Macs slower. I'd love to hear your experience. If you have any other thoughts, post those here also.

I usually use the betas, so I've been on 45 for a few weeks now.

38 was not as stable as 45 is.

I can't seem to get consistent results to definitely say whether 45 is faster but HTML5 playback is better.
At the moment, my 1.33 12" Powerbook seems to like it more than my 2.1 iMac - the Powerbook's on Tiger, maybe that's the difference?

I found that Tiger is better than Leopard for web browsing, at least on G4s.

I'll have to give it a go on my various PowerPCs later, but is the "tenFOUR Fox" a reference to how OS X is now "macOS Sierra"? Love it.

I really don't see any performance change for the better or worse myself. Haven't used it much on G4s just yet, but its still brutal on the G3 and plenty fine on the G5.

I just tried TenFourFox 45 on my iMac G4 700MHz, and it also seems faster. Certainly like the changes I'm seeing. I'll have to try it on my iBook G3 "Clamshell" next, after I upgrade the memory and install Tiger.

I tried it on a couple clamshells and its not pleasant even with 576MB of RAM. Unfortunately Tiger WebKit and all other browsers are so outdated now, TFF is about the only one that will correctly render most pages.

38 was also terribly slow on my Clamshell, but at least I could view websites correctly. Unfortunatly, I had to remove the 512MB RAM card from my Clamshell in order to fix my iMac G4 (which wouldn't boot because the internal RAM went bad), so now my Clamshell iBook is stuck with 64MB of RAM, so it can't even boot Mac OS X (however I was able to install 10.0). So, until I buy more RAM, I can't run TenFourFox.

I installed it on my g4 single733mh powermac and it runs absolutely horribly. It has 766mb of pc133 ram. I went through a few tutorials on how to speed TFF up but really they did very little to improve performance. I have 1.5mb ram on the way however (512x3) and a dual 1ghz processor ready to go in as well, so I am hoping to get better performance with these upgrades.

I have some 128gb SSD drives but will need to get a sata controller card. Cheap on amazon - OS X compatible for like 15 bucks or so. I'll report back when I get the box upgraded. Until then, I've been using an ancient version of Safari and a slightly less ancient version of omniweb for basic google searches and light webpage browsing etc. which is working quite well, actually.

On a side note, I considered upgrading to 10.5.8 post upgrades as Ive read it has better support for light web/email duty. I would stick with 10.4.11 but this TFF experience to date has been almost unusable for me unfortunately.

I haven't tested it that thoroughly, but performance seems about on par with TenFourFox 38.x on my PowerBook G4 (1.42 GHz DLSD/HR, 2 GB RAM, SSD). I haven't noticed any noticeable increases or dips in performance.

I will do that. There have to be some better tweaks that I haven't tried. Lucky for me, you did all the work and conveniently put them at the top of this forum! I'm not looking for rocket speed, rather usable for a 15 year old PM I think it's absolutely doable. Can't wait to get the upgrades in.

Well…making it stickied wasn't me, that was the mods answering another user's request. But I do maintain the thread and try to keep any major updates noted in the first post.

I must say 45 is much more responsive on my G5 quad, things load up easier.

I'm using TenFourFox on a PowerMac G5 2.0 GHz Dual-Processors, running OSX 10.4.11. It runs very nicely and HTML5 works nicely. I got rid of flash and I can watch YouTube well enough, though it seems happier at 360 or 480 and struggles a bit with 720p and 1080p on YouTube. I find that T4F 45 runs better than 38 in most respects.

I have to disagree. I idle on Google at around the same CPU hit using Leopard as you do on Tiger.

I'd advise using uMatrix as it duplicates both the functions of NoScript and adds in the features of RequestPolicy - all in one plugin.

That said, I would think you probably are not blocking certain Google services.

I block everything on Google that is not relevent to keeping my account logged in or pulling static images for Google News. I'm at work right now so I can't give you a list, but a particular offender is images Google pulls from YouTube.

You should not be idling on Google at that CPU load.

Bear in mind, I keep the same setup across machines so my Powerbook TFF and NoScript preferences are the same as my iMac's and like you, I block every script until only the functionality I need remains.
I'll try my other Leopard machines later - it might be just a quirk on this iMac...

Yes, I do the same. It's one of the reasons I copy my prefs file from Mac to Mac.

Unfortunately with my MBP I had to break this practice because there is some sort of bug/corruption somewhere that causes a graphic glitch when using Firefox on my MBP.

I was forced to use Hack's clean prefs file (with all my mods), install all the plugins that I have on the PowerPC Macs and then go item by item to set prefs. Just for the MBP. Got rid of the graphic glitch but was a PITA to do.

I generally don't bother with making sure the NoScript/Request Policy/uMatrix settings are equal though. I'm on several Macs all the time so it's easier just to click and set over again when I switch Macs (assuming I go back to the same site on the new Mac).

You were right Erik, there was one extra script I wasn't blocking for Google - the site itself, www.google.co.uk.
I missed that as I thought that one would be essential whilst all the other invisible services weren't.
Even so, interesting that one script adds around 65% extra CPU - and I tested that across 3 machines - serves as a good reminder of how essential a script blocker is!

I'll also add, that even without blocking that script, CPU lowers once you have logged into Google.

Slightly off topic, but how do you guys look at a picture on photo bucket? Seems like way more of a pain in the ass than it should be. I've resorted to editing a file I have called photoBucketSucks.htm and pasting the links in there with <img src="http:// "> so that I can just see the pictures without all the BS.
