Like the title says, I'm getting a lot of ghosting on my MacBook M4 Max. Anybody else getting the same?
But the MacBook M1 Max also has the mini-led, and that ghosting is way less noticeable (as shown in the video)I should have mine on Monday, so I’ll report back. I see that notebookcheck.net’s review noted the poor pixel response times that have been common on the MBPs since the mini-led was introduced.
Apple MacBook Pro 14 2024 review - The M4 Pro and matte display are massive upgrades
Notebookcheck has tested the brand-new Apple MacBook Pro 14 with the M4 Pro, 48 GB RAM, Thunderbolt 5 and a matte nano-texture display.www.notebookcheck.net
Just got mine. the 48GB model. No ghosting whatsoever.Like the title says, I'm getting a lot of ghosting on my MacBook M4 Max. Anybody else getting the same?
Most likely, just return it, get a new one. I just sold my M3Max 16 inch macbook pro and bought the M4Max 16 inch macbook pro. To me the screen feels faster. I see no ghosting of any sort even when fast scrolling white text on black background and moving finder windows around. And trust me, checking the screen is one of the first things I do on a new laptop. I remember my Intel 2019 16 inch macbook pro; ghosting on that one was horrible. That's got to be a defect of some kind. It's not just ghosting, it's horrible bloom around the cursor from the backlight. Not quite the same issue that the poor pixel response causes.
I also think I won the silicon lottery. I got the single core score of 4049 in geek bench 6 and multicore of 25116. The performance of this thing is stunning. That's got to be a defect of some kind. One of the reasons I don't feel the need to update until the Tandem OLED displays come to the MBP.Notebook Check has measured worse response times in later models compared to the M1 series. I'm not sure how noticeable the difference is, but my M1 Pro doesn't bother me.
Right, it turned out to be something like that. But at first, it never occurred to me, which is why I didn’t at least try restarting the machine before posting this.Looks like it was an issue managing the mini led backlight array not responding fast enough/correctly in tandem with the pixel colours to the movement, so it's definitely a firmware/software issue of some sort at some level.

Incredible, it must be the geekbench score that makes the screen faster. Most likely, just return it, get a new one. I just sold my M3Max 16 inch macbook pro and bought the M4Max 16 inch macbook pro. I don't think it's that they're not a big Apple fan, they're just unbiased.I just read the Notebook check revie. I’m not familiar with the site but I get the impression they’re not a big Apple fan.
Wow, this is great news!!Good morning! Great news... Upgrading to the latest Sequoia dev beta and/or restarting the machine fixed it. I no longer see any kind of ghosting, and on a side-by-side comparison with the M1, it looks very similar.
Didn't seem like the kind of issue that was software related, but glad I don't have to return it!
If it shows up again I'll update the thread.
Contact Apple, go to a store if possible. They’ll replace it I hope.I hope so... Let's wait and see if others report it too.
This is mostly visible on a gray background with the brightness set to about 30-40%.
