I wouldn't rely on it for every day tethering. It HAMMERS the iPhone battery.
Its fine for a backup / emergency, but not for every day use.
+1Yes. Jailbreak your iPhone and install MyWi.
Works a treat (having said that, I still have a 3g Service for the iPad)
I got my ipad in the mail today after 4 long days of waiting. I'm going to jailbreak for tethering. Does anyone know if the iPhone has to be jailbroken?
I love when people say that...
I tethered for an hour before work this morning and it used less than 1/4 of the battery.
No big deal, now I'm at work so I can charge it if I want.
People talk about it killing the battery like you will never be around a charger.
This isnt LOST, most people are around a wall or car charger at some point through the day. Plus i dont see myself sitting somewhere wanting to tether all day anyways..
MiWi looks decent, but $60 a month is really steep, considering I'm already paying for an iPhone data plan and home internet access as well. 250 MB is more reasonable ($40) but wouldn't last anywhere close to a month with an iPad.
Oh! Do you have to pay for this feature? I thought once you had jailbroken it would be free? $60pm?!!
Am I misunderstanding miwy and miwi?
HiRez either has a very, poorly worded sentence or doesn't know what he is talking about.
MyWi costs $9.99 to purchase. There's no 'feature to buy' nor any monthly charges for it.
I think the $60/month number is what ATT charges for tethering on an iPhone.
For less than 1 month tethering charges, you can buy an iMax 500 mah external battery for your iPhone and buy MyWi.
This is painful to read.....
All of these questions have been asked and answered a million times on this and other internet sites.

What's the difference between using rock and no rock?
