I attempted this on a 3gs running 4.3.1 with BB 05.16.02. I thought it was successful, but it hasn't actually worked so far. Here's a brief summary of what I've done.

1. Followed the page 1 instructions exactly using the "replace" rather than "modify" method.

After a couple reboots, I still was not seeing the toggle to enable tethering so I kept searching and moved on to:

2. Modified com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.plist to change the value from 1021 to 1023

This enabled the toggle and seemed to be working. I was no longer seeing "Set up Personal Hotspot". However, after actually attempting to use USB and then Bluetooth tethering, my settings page reverted to "Set up Personal Hotspot" and I'm being prompted to call or go to the website again. My toggle also disappeared. After another reboot, it hasn't changed.

I encountered the same issue on my iPhone 4. I found the solution: add an APN entry in your IPCC with type-mask set at 48 (tethering only). APN name, username and password should correspond to your usual data plan.

works perfectly on iphone 4 4.3.1 1.59.00 BB on ATT.
Downloaded the .deb, installed it, rebooted.
downloaded plist and replaced the original.
reset network settings.

thats it.

Same setup for me. I followed the instructions exactly, but still get the pop up to call/go to website when I select Set Up Personal Hotspot.

EDIT: Reset network settings again, and now it works.

agree, had to reset network settings to get it to work. btw, for att, set the first apn (phone) to type-mask 49, and get rid of the 4th apn (broadband). been working for me on last several firmwares. i think the broadband apn is just for tethering, so by not letting the phone even see it, maybe att will think all of my data is phone data and not tethering.

original type-masks are: phone-17, acds.voicemail-2, wap.cingular-4, broadband-32.

49 would then equal the 32+17

also, someone uploaded the deb to a cydia repo for easier install:

I have uploaded the @jav's deb for 4.3.1 Wortel Commcenter Patch to my Cydia repo. (if it is forbidden delete this post without problem).

Antho,

I'm still having the same issue, and that leads be to believe I didn't do what you suggested correctly. Here's what I did:

1. Open carrier.plist using OS X Property List Editor.
2. Expand root and apns.
3. Add a new sibling to the three entries present there.
4. Password and username were blank in the original, so I just created those entries without any string text. I did not add a "signature" under this new APN. Added an entry with type-mask of 48.
5. Change com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.plist back to 1023 (it reverted to 1021).
6. Save and reboot.

you need a signature for all apns. just copy and paste one of the other apns and modify from there.

I plaid with com.apple.MobileInternetSharing.plist and it never brought anything to me. As scottuf says, I would simply copy/paste a signature in your new APN entry.

Awesome! I have it working via Bluetooth. Big thanks to each of you, Antho and Scott (also, Go Gators!).

Now to figure out why my computer isn't cooperating with USB tethering.

automatic move to at&t tethering plan

thanks to this great thread I had tethering on my 3g iphone and now on my iphone 4 with 4.3 and the personal hotspot. I do use the internet connection with my laptop occasionally but mostly I need it for the ipad and my wife's iphone when there's no wifi available (the ipad is a wifi one and her iphone has the lowest data plan while my iphone has the original unlimited or 5gig plan)

I recently heard that at&t is cracking down on tethering and switching customers to their tethering plan if they detect it. I've always been careful to check my usage and make sure I don't get to 5gigs. I figured if I stayed below the limit they might not care to check my account but apparently thats not true.

can at&t detect any tethering? does it make a difference if its through this hack or an app like MiWy? does it make a difference what device is using the connection - laptop, ipad, or another iphone?

is there anything I can do to make it more difficult for them to detect or perhaps even hide my tethering? this link suggests changing the default TTL on devices using the internet connection and before I figure out how to do this I wonder if it would work and be worth the effort

Has somebody already had success with firmware 4.3.2?

I've just tried it on 4.3.2. The .deb file cannot be installed:

# dpkg -i /var/tmp/CCPatch.jav4.4ALL4.deb
Selecting previously deselected package ccpatch.wortel.4all4.
(Reading database ... 870 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking ccpatch.wortel.4all4 (from .../var/tmp/CCPatch.jav4.4ALL4.deb) ...
Setting up ccpatch.wortel.4all4 (4.x-2) ...
CommCenter 4.x Patch by wortel@CyDevice
4.3.2 is the wrong version must be 4.x
dpkg: error processing ccpatch.wortel.4all4 (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
ccpatch.wortel.4all4

looks to me like it contains a version check.

Updated the first post.

The first post now says 4.3.2 is supported. But I've just tried it, the patch seems to contain a version check and won't install on 4.3.2.

Edit: oh, nevermind, I see now that the .deb patch was also updated. Downloading now

Holy cow, can someone just post a direct link to the dang download? It's nothing but pop ups and other links taking you to other pages with other links.

Hey gang, I have a iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1, jailbroken using greenp0ison and unlocked using ultrasn0w with baseband 1.59. I would like to configure the apn settings when using a sim card other than the official sim. I have tried the following (a). this site Unlockit - APN Changer for your iPhone which creates a profile then syncs it with your phone, (b). using iPhone configuration utility and (c). i've tried using "tether me" which has setting to configure apn but neither seems to work properly.

Would this method of accessing .plist work for me or Is there another way to configure APN settings on iPhone 4? Thanks.

Hi, I have a iPhone 3GS 4.3.2 with Baseband 05.13.04 jailbroken and unlocked with redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 and ultrasn0w 1.2.2. The problem I am having is I want to change APN settings so I can get MMS working properly. However the "Cellular Data Network" doesn't show up.

Will this hack enable me to get it back? :( Now I can get the .deb file installed no problem but I don't understand how to do the rest for T-Mobile. Any help would be appreciated.

Not trying to hijack this thread or anything, but this seems to be the best audience here.

Has any AT&T users that modified their tethering APN mask (+32) received any of those "Text of Death" messages from AT&T for Tethering? I'm curious if the detection is simply related to people naively throwing traffic on the "broadband" APN or if it is really DPI.

Sorry if this is against the rules.

Cheers!

This is definitely a good question. For those who haven't heard read this article.

http://www.redmondpie.com/how-att-tracks-unauthorized-tethering-on-your-jailbroken-iphone-and-how-to-hide-it-from-them/

I manually edited my carrier.plist and changed the wap.cingular wap to 53. But I am not really sure that necessary means that tethering traffic is getting routed through that APN and not the broadband APN. The broadband APN is the APN that is AT&T detects you using data on that and you don't have a tethering plan knows you have hacked your phone.

Does anyone know how to tell or detect which APN the Personal Hotspot feature is using when you do the commcenter hack?

Here they say that it's an APN recognition.

I'm not sure you understood what I said at all. You just repeated what I already said.

I am trying to figure out what APN the native Personal Hotspot feature uses, not MyWi or PDAnet.

Anyone know how to figure this out?

It uses the APN defined by the mask-id 48 in the carrier.plist

Sorry for the understanding mismach, English isn't my primary language.
