Is anyone having any luck being able to tether after they've updated to the AT&T 5.5 carrier file? I saw a few posts in another thread where people were claiming that it worked, as well as MMS. Upon this news I decided to go for it and I updated my carrier file from 5.0 to 5.5. On the 5.0 carrier file, I was able to send MMS and also tether. After the update, the tethering option was still in my network settings. However, when I tried to connect my computer using bluetooth tethering, it wouldn't connect (despite finding the iphone). It would connect and then immediately disconnect. So, I decided to reboot my iphone and try again. This time, the tethering option was now gone from my network settings. I then proceeded to Reset Network Settings and try again. Upon doing so, the tethering option re-appeared, but it was different. It now said "Enable Tethering" instead of just "Tethering". When I tried to turn tethering on, it said to contact AT&T about adding tethering to my account.

I went back in itunes and re-installed the 5.0 carrier file.

Is anyone else having issues with the tethering function using the 5.5 carrier file?

I am using an iphone 3G, jailbroken on OS 3.0.1.

That thread isn't exactly the same question, but it was related and I did find some helpful info there.

From my reading it seems the 5.5 carrier file breaks tethering. It shows up in Network Settings, but then disappears when you try to use it.

I have not yet found anyone saying that they saw the message that I saw on my screen about contacting AT&T to add tethering to my account. I should have taken a screen shot of that message, but too late now...

Thank you

Mine did the same thing. I got it using MyWi and when i turned it on it reloaded and tethering option is gone.

Not sure if its a coincidence but I lost tethering with the update. Added it back in with an older ipcc file.. then I made sure tethering was active while applying the update to 5.5 and tethering stuck.

Did this for two phones and confirmed it worked.

Tethering and MMS both seem to be working fine. 3.01 jb 3gs/3g.

edit:

Scratch that post.. tethering keeps vanishing.. reverted to 5.0. MMS seems to be working on 5.0 anyway.

I updated to the 5.5 carrier setting on my 3GS. I previously had tethering before hand which i forgot if i put a hacked carrier file. (no mms tho) I updated to 5.5 and tethering is STILL there and I have MMS :)

What ipcc where you using before you upgraded to 5.5?

3g (non jb) and OS 3.1 w/ 5.5 carrier file

Lost tethering. The Benm.at hack doesn't bring it back.

I could never get MMS to work with the 5.0 carrier file, but it does work with the 5.5 file.

Anyone have 3.1 with MMS and tethering?

Did not have tethering "hack" enabled prior to 5.5 carrier update (installed today). So, if anyone is in the same boat, here is a simple way to get both..

1. Installed carrier update via https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/792894/ (jb 3.0 3gs)
2. Rebooted
3. In iPhone, navigated to http://help.benm.at/cfgs/us_att.mobileconfig
4. Accepted config
5. Reboot
6. Both MMS and Tethering are active

Awesome! This worked great for me. MMS + Tethering on 3GS (jb'd 3.0).

No need to upgrade for a while for me. :) Thanks again.

Followed steps to a "T" and tethering working again just fine. Update to 5.5 first and works great over edge. However, Visual Voice mail is screwed up again and now I have to find the instructions on how to fix it.

I am jailbroke using 3.01 on a 3GS

Had the benm hack from before and I was worried I was going to lose it, I'm getting ready to move so no internet except through the phone. Thankfully, never missed a beat! ;)

Totally unrelated but this whole site is awesome, I've been a follower for a long while and finally made the jump to poster lol.

iphone 3g 3.0 and 5.1

I just finished changing my base band from 4.0 to 5.1 so far I got my tethering working and do have mms capabilities I'm not getting any errors of any sort with the mms all seems to be working fine and another note on that bluetooth tethering as far as I know bluetooth tethering never worked before I use my tethering with the data cable

This was the same way I had mine setup, I was not using teather before 5.5 but it works after 5.5...I don't really need it because I pay for a data card but it's nice to have either way.

I am reposting this from another post:

Change the ipcc 5.5 to allow tethering. edit the carrier.plist, which may need to be converted to xml first. go to the first of three apn settings, which is "phone". go to the type-mask setting of that apn, and change the type-mask from 1 to 49. save it, re-update your iphone with it. this will enable tethering for fw 3.0.1 and 3.0.

Note:

"As of 3.1, the *.ipcc carrier bundles are signed, and you can no longer force tethering capability simply by crafting your own bundle. The good news is this obstacle can probably be overcome by virtue of the jailbreak. But so far that extra hack is not part of the PwnageTool custom IPSW creation."

Jailbroken 3gs iPhone 3.0.1 firmware

Has anyone done this on a 3gs with 3.0.1 firmware and not had visual voicemail break? If so is there a hacked carrier file which will support this?

You mind sharing that ipcc file?

Where is the carrier.plist file exactly?

libertyforall: I've found the carrier.plist file and edited it appropriately, but it looks as if there is an "alias" of the file in the var/mobile/library/preferences where I originally copied it from. Does the carrier.plist file need to be uploaded to a different directory in the iPhone, or can I overwrite the "alias" in the current directory?

Please give us just a bit more info...

Thanks!

EDIT: After reading a couple of other threads, the carrier.plist file that libertyforall refers to is actually IN the .ippc file. You need to edit the carrier.plist file within the .ipcc file prior to installing the ATT 5.5.ipcc update in iTunes.

same for me, I had this enable almost a month before mms came out, I always had my tethering and MMS working, I have 3.0 jb, dunno why people want to update so bad.
