This made me laugh very loud :D I feel your pain. I'm wanting a i7 iMac, MBP, or maybe even a mac pro with in the next 6 months.

Glad I could help! I actually just ordered my i7 about 6 hours ago. I'm super excited to say the least. This will be my first computer that can actually play games.

uuuuh!!! I want one.

Would you mind doing a mkv to mp4 conversion on handbrake? I'm curious as to how fast it is. 720p videos.

The 5850M is an up-to-date card. It's one of the better mobile GPUs on the market now. Those expecting a huge watt-sucking double-width PCIx desktop card in an iMac should be more aware of the design, heat, and power constraints involved.
This. As much as I want a desktop card I know with the space it just isn't possible. At least right now anyway.

I would, but I'm looking at over a week for delivery. :(

Apple needs to make a consumer level user upgradeable desktop for me. I would happily meet them halfway by buying apple upgrade parts like the Mac pro ram and video cards.
These iMacs won't cut it and Mac pros are way too expensive for me.
I'll stick with my Mac mini and build a gaming pc because having the greatness of osx and great gaming will never happen on one machine for a reasonable price if they don't change this pattern.
I love osx but I want a nice gaming machine too without paying 5 grand.

A little hopeful to see the new Mac pro configurations. There just might be one that will be the system of my dreams with a price tag I can handle.

I was really bummed with the last iMac line cause you had to upgrade almost all the way up just to get 512mb on the gpu. These are better for sure but I've decided against em again.

I wish I could smack jobs into thinking it's a good idea to make macs for gamers that are better than a pc and also not a 4-5k machine.

It's funny I wouldn't pay 2500 for a windows gaming rig, but I would pay 2500 for an osx gaming rig on par with a 1500 pc gaming rig but they just don't exist.

I think apple has a huge opportunity to win over millions more switchers if they stopped ignoring gamers.

It's very frustrating.

How come the Pixel Fillrate and Texture Fillrate is so low? My 4850M has 8.0 GPixel/s and 20.1 GTexel/s respectively.

My GPU has a default clock of 503 MHz, and 850MHz for the Memory, 54.4GB/s bandwidth. What makes a card faster? The regular clock or memory, shaders or all of them? Which are the more important ones?

Considering the price of these machines the GPUs are just sad. I'd happily trade a few additional mm in iMac depth for an up to date card.

I wouldn't feel so bitter if the Mac Pro wasn't so insanely expensive... What the range needs is the flexibility of an upgradable in-between machine. Sigh.

Your statement is kind of absurd. The mobility 5850 is one of the top notebook cards atm, there aren't many better aside the SLI/Crossfire solutions. And PC notebooks with this cards and GDDR5 also start at about 1500 $, so the price is ok. Form factor is an important thing with iMacs and it won't allow for a bigger desktop card, nor is there a real reason to have one. For instance, people were complaining about the 4850m in the last iMac, and yet they could run any game just right.

Completely agree couldnt said it better myself. I love osx but you really do need a separate box if a serious gamer. The problem is now you have to manage two computers - 2x keyboard/mouse (made even more difficult given pc vs mac kb/mouse), monitor wires/switching etc.. just overall an unpleasant experience for those of us that are obsessive with clean wires and minimalist setup.

The mac pro with the good graphic card will cost $3500+ without monitor, that's just insane.

Not sure if this was asked, but can you upgrade the imac graphic card youself? since it's dedicated, cant you just pull it out and put in something else like the ssd upgrade?

clue train driving through.....

wait for it.....

imac is not a notebook

...

imac is not a notebook

No, iMac is a ultra-compact desktop which combines notebook and desktop technologies to create highest possible power in a very small form. This is IMHO how Apple sees this product and from this point of view they did a damn good job packing all that stuff inside. If you are not happy with these facts, feel free to convince Apple that your design would be better.

About 5850M (from notebookcheck):

The GDDR5 version (on par with a GTX 285M) is about 40% faster in this benchmark than the DDR3 equipped version (on par with a GTX 260M).

So this is a good upgrade, the 5850M of imac 27" is better than 4870M and not far from 5870M

Some people shouldt just go home.

I mean seriously, im getting fed up of people complaining day in and day out. Last time it was the 4850, show me one game that card couldnt handle at decent settings at native resoultion.

With the new card, we should run a new game like sc2 on high/ultra on native res. I mean seriously. Thats a new game... on a all in one, isnt that great?

You know desktop gpu's doesnt fit ye? IF you use 0.5% of your brain power you know it wont work. Because of space, heat, power consumption etc.

So then we have to go mobility. We can screw nvidia based fermi chips cause they run so hot and use a lot of watts. And only perform slightly better then the 5870 mobility.

And guess what, you can easily overclock the 5850 to 5870. So actually you have one of the best cards you can fit/have in the imac. And one of the best mobility cards. And its so F'ed up that people are never happy.

What, are you a hoping for a radeon 5970 or what? And can you tell the difference between 60 or 100 fps in a game. I mean come an. Get a grip, and behave.

IF you want a gaming machine, go build yourself one and stop moaning. iMac is probably the best machine Apple has, atleast what you get for your money. I just think its great we have come so far that we can play games that just came out at good settings, with good fps. Some years ago, it was not like that.

You deserve a huge kick in the but.

Please please, is there someone who can write an overclock software for mac os x ? Dont want to install Windows but want to play future Steam games at high res :D

I doubt it. OS X is too closed with its EFIs and stuff plus you're better off with Windows as games run better

+1

and seriously is it possible to overclock the card to play crysis at highest on windows?
and what are the risks for the 2k machine?

Yes, you can overclock it under Windows. Seeing that 4850 was ~55W chip and 5850 is 39W, you can OC it pretty much without issues

Now we know that it's a mobility 5850, is there an 'equivalent' desktop card that this would be comparable to? I'm still trying to get my head around what performance gains I would get from my current Mac pro3,1 with the 8800.
My other option of course is if the HD 5870 from the new Pro's are released as an upgrade kit which could go into my 08 machine.. hmm.

ATI 5750 ! (that's why they indicate 5750 on Apple Store)

or 9800 GTX

To what extent? How well could you make the new iMac perform comparing to an alienware or conventional gaming PC to play latest games and graphic intensive games?

Also I want to thank you as you have helped alot of people including myself :D

Do we know if next OS X versions (10.6.5 or 10.7 ?) handle better the games ?

Ps: sorry if my english is incorrect
