Whatever the case, for me it is a major upgrade. I'm running on a PowerBook G4. I can hardly play pong.

I'd guess Mobility HD 5730 based on the GDDR3 usage.Any word yet on what the 5670 is specifically?
This made me laugh very loudI feel your pain. I'm wanting a i7 iMac, MBP, or maybe even a mac pro with in the next 6 months.
Glad I could help! I actually just ordered my i7 about 6 hours ago. I'm super excited to say the least. This will be my first computer that can actually play games.
This. As much as I want a desktop card I know with the space it just isn't possible. At least right now anyway. The 5850M is an up-to-date card. It's one of the better mobile GPUs on the market now. Those expecting a huge watt-sucking double-width PCIx desktop card in an iMac should be more aware of the design, heat, and power constraints involved.
uuuuh!!! I want one.
Would you mind doing a mkv to mp4 conversion on handbrake? I'm curious as to how fast it is. 720p videos.
Considering the price of these machines the GPUs are just sad. I'd happily trade a few additional mm in iMac depth for an up to date card.
I wouldn't feel so bitter if the Mac Pro wasn't so insanely expensive... What the range needs is the flexibility of an upgradable in-between machine. Sigh.
Apple needs to make a consumer level user upgradeable desktop for me. I would happily meet them halfway by buying apple upgrade parts like the Mac pro ram and video cards.
These iMacs won't cut it and Mac pros are way too expensive for me.
I'll stick with my Mac mini and build a gaming pc because having the greatness of osx and great gaming will never happen on one machine for a reasonable price if they don't change this pattern.
I love osx but I want a nice gaming machine too without paying 5 grand.
A little hopeful to see the new Mac pro configurations. There just might be one that will be the system of my dreams with a price tag I can handle.
I was really bummed with the last iMac line cause you had to upgrade almost all the way up just to get 512mb on the gpu. These are better for sure but I've decided against em again.
I wish I could smack jobs into thinking it's a good idea to make macs for gamers that are better than a pc and also not a 4-5k machine.
It's funny I wouldn't pay 2500 for a windows gaming rig, but I would pay 2500 for an osx gaming rig on par with a 1500 pc gaming rig but they just don't exist.
I think apple has a huge opportunity to win over millions more switchers if they stopped ignoring gamers.
It's very frustrating.
Your statement is kind of absurd. The mobility 5850 is one of the top notebook cards atm, there aren't many better aside the SLI/Crossfire solutions. And PC notebooks with this cards and GDDR5 also start at about 1500 $, so the price is ok. Form factor is an important thing with iMacs and it won't allow for a bigger desktop card, nor is there a real reason to have one. For instance, people were complaining about the 4850m in the last iMac, and yet they could run any game just right.
Thanks for the Flash, Gordon.clue train driving through.....
wait for it.....
imac is not a notebook

... you can easily overclock the 5850 to 5870.
Please please, is there someone who can write an overclock software for mac os x ? Dont want to install Windows but want to play future Steam games at high res![]()

+1
and seriously is it possible to overclock the card to play crysis at highest on windows?
and what are the risks for the 2k machine?
Now we know that it's a mobility 5850, is there an 'equivalent' desktop card that this would be comparable to? I'm still trying to get my head around what performance gains I would get from my current Mac pro3,1 with the 8800.

Yes, you can overclock it under Windows. Seeing that 4850 was ~55W chip and 5850 is 39W, you can OC it pretty much without issues
I doubt it. OS X is too closed with its EFIs and stuff plus you're better off with Windows as games run better
