I have a question.

Does navigon have a car kit that works with its app? I know tom tom has one and magellan has one coming soon. Will these car kits work with any of the apps or are they tied to their specific company's app?

They do this one. It's a mount, suction pad and charger.

Can anyone tell me what maps version the TomTom US map app has? I have heard that it uses a different (more outdated) version from the full North American app but that seems completely nonsensical to me.

are there actually any reviews from independant and unbias companies (tech websites/magazines etc) that can indicate a true reflection of the pros and cons of each program?

im interested in buying one after xmas (and have been for a long time) but am still unconvinced that either is a success yet.

Check out GPSreviews.com they did a good job on reviewing both.

well after reading all this i'm still at a loss deciding wether to get tomtom or navigon....

I have a 3G... and due to that sluggish navigon it makes me lean towards tomtom.... But I've heard so many other good things for navigon.

Which app does a better searching for POI's? Because that's what i seem to navigate to usually.

Not sure about TomTom's POI database, but Navigon offers Google Local Search.

Do not get Navigon, it's so slow that I'm actually considering getting Tom Tom after paying $70 for Navigon when it came out. I have a 3G, that's the main reason why.

What about navigation apps that use online maps? They are much cheaper, maps are updated frequently and have powerful POI search.
Take for example the new launched NavigArt Lite which is the free version of the NavigArt application that will be launced next week for 1.59 euro.
It has a strong POI searched combined with the similar functionality seen in AroundMe app for displayng information about places around you.
It gives search result with phone number and website address, and you can access the website or call the number directly from application.

Navigon 1.4 is SLOOOOOWWW

Yeah, I have a 3G also. Navigon makes it a real bitch to simply add a street address. You have to first add the state, (and wait 10 seconds), add the zip (and wait 10 seconds), and type the street name (and wait 10 seconds), and then you have to pick the street name from the drop down list.

So it takes almost half a minute to simply add one addy. Navigon needs to do it like Google Maps app. Just add the address and it finds it.

Navigon is super slow and makes me not want to use it over the built in google maps app.

Searched using NavigArt for top gear's circuit. Entered top gear in the "Place:" field of the Advanced Search and in the top of the results I found Top Gear Dog location. Showing it on the google hybrid map I could see that is indeed top gear's circuit!

Then search after my last name in the same way as above and I got as results all the places I've so far visited around the world!!!!

TomTom uses TeleAtlas for their maps. They are a European company, but do an excellent job of updating their maps frequently. Navigon gets their maps from Navteq, the leading North American map company and they too do a great job. The worst map company out there is MapSure, which is owned by the company that produces CoPilot. Their maps ARE outdated.

I live in Columbus, OH and I have both TomTom and Navigon. In the new condo complex I live in, TomTom has my address and street. Navigon only has the first section of the complex. However on the highway Tomtom thinks there is an area to merge which has been gone for years, maybe a minor oversight? I think TomTom's maps are more updated though. However they are harder to follow and the TTS is sometimes weird speaking. I would suggest Navigon for 3GS users, TomTom for 3G users.

I bought TomTom US during the $50 promotion. No experience with Navigon. But definitely make sure you get some sort of in car charging device for your phone if you plan to use any navigation software. My 10 minute drive from work to home using the app to test one night resulted in 30% battery lost. would've taken 30 minutes and the battery would've been done.

This is somewhat true. The full NA maps do have a 'slightly' older revision number than the USA only version, but they are close enough that differences should be minor.
My guess is that TomTom used the older map for the NA build due to file size. The current NA map may have been too large for the App Store. Keep in mind is that the two maps are nearly the same file size despite the increased coverage area. This suggests that the NA version is more tightly compressed. However, from what I have heard the to version perform nearly the same in both accuracy and speed. I wouldn't let this issue impact your decision.
I expect future builds of the App to have matching maps.

I just looked up the map version for the latest versions of TomTom:
North_America v835.2510
United_States_2GB v840.2569

TomTom releases maps quarterly. The Full NA version is one release older. Three months shouldn't make much of a difference in map quality, but the TomTom forums suggest that the 8.40 maps have made significant updates to the IQ routes. Hopes this helps!
