Thats nothing, I think it looks fine!

Sure, I can appreciate that.

You know, F. Scott Fitzgerald once confessed to Hemmingway that he worried about the size of his equipment. Hemmingway went into a bathroom with him and an examination was made.

"You're adequate," said the older writer.

Your MPB case is adequate. ;-)

This is my first laptop, so I'm finding it tough in deciding on what is a level of expected imperfection as opposed to something that should be returned ASAP.

Thanks again for your opinions! BTW love the analogy :)

Just an update on this. I took my C2D MBP to the Apple Store today, as I had also started to notice this "squeaky" spacebar issue.

They took it in the back and 20 minutes later brought it back, having replaced the spacebar and I think some of the mechanism underneath. I forget the exact explanation, but they said that there were some sort of clips or something that might have come loose, and were resulting in the "squeaking" sound.

It's no longer making the squeaking sound at all, and the only noise the spacebar makes is a general "clicking" sound if I really bang it hard (I asked them about that, since none of the other keys do that, and they explained that's just the nature of the keyboard....... I notice that my desktop keyboard is also like that, where the spacebar is louder than the rest of the keys).

I purchased my MBP online at apple.com with the .edu discount. I also got appleCare. Can i take mine to a store to get mine fixed? My spacebar squeaks too. Its a bit annoying when its quiet around me.

Loud HDD and...

(15" 2.16 w/160 Gb HDD)

When I got mine (on Friday - ordered 30th Oct), it took a minute or so to boot when OS X was first loading. Ah, must be doing some processing, I thought.

Logged in, set up a user, started installing my new Elgato card drivers. It got about halfway before the hard disk started making the typical "i think I'm reading data, but I'm actually going to drill through the case" noise. Kernel Panic, turned it off, removed all power, turned it on, white screen and lots of scratchy clicking from the now late HDD.

This soon stopped, and it won't even boot from the install DVD - you just get a white screen, no HDD noise any more. The DVD drive was spinning up, but it wouldn't boot, so maybe this died too. The boot manager didn't give me any start-up discs and in the end I had to eject the disc by holding the eject button.

Spoke to apple tech support who thought it might be a software problem, but then as they could hear the HDD clicking booked it in for a replacement, which is on its way from Shanghai as we speak. Awful TNT didn't pick the old one up until today (they couldn't find the address - funny, they found it on friday). Apparently apple messed up and sent the other one yesterday anyway, so it should be here soon-ish.

At least 3 weeks for a MacBook Pro. hooray! Hopefully the new one will be put together properly and not have a dead HDD/DVD/pixels/backlight/mobo etc and will last for more than 45 minutes.

If that's uneven I need to send back my nearly warranty expired PowerBook back to the Store. My left gap can fill little pack pages of paper :)

Oh, noes! This is my first laptop, so I'm glad I got some perspective on the issue here :) Thanks.

I've just begun noticing some other things as well... the keyboard randomly stopped working last night, and the trackpad would not select my Adium window in Expose this morning... it was the strangest thing.

I'm not so sure if this last thing is a problem, but my MBP doesn't go to sleep before it nearly depletes its entire batter reserve... it just turns itself off, and it is impossible to turn it back on without plugging in the power adapter.

I guess I will have to call Apple to get this sorted out.

This is a bug with Adium. Happens to my friend on his quad G5 as well.

It's getting really nasty!

I'm talking about the "grainy" thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/251352/

Seems this is a real issue, and not just for people who have come over from the PC side with the purchase of a C2D, but also for those who've used other Apple notebooks. My take on it: the display is inferior to those on even the low end Dells, like e.g., my father’s 15" Inspiron that he paid <$1000 for. I know -- I've seen both!

Perhaps some C2D owners are OK with their display, but I venture to say that a lot of those who say they’re OK with theirs simply can't bring themselves to admit that they made a mistake.

Flame away! I'm cool with that

Somehow I really wonder if the decreased display quality is due to Apple trying to make the MBP a battery powered stadium floodlight. We don't need such a damned bright screen already!

Geez, they seem to have gotten on with some kind of obsession since the final Powerbook revision.

Honestly I'm still impressed with ability of the screen to actually render a black or dark scene properly, without a bunch of backlighting shining through, which does affect my Dell 2005fpw 20" desktop LCD, and my 23" Samsung LCD HDTV.

I don't really think that the problem is that the screen is too bright; in fact, it's ability to actually display blacks without backlight bleeding makes it one of the best LCD's I've ever owned in that regard.

I'm not really sure what you're talking about in this case then, with it being "too bright".

I don't live near an apple store so I'm questioning whether it's a wise idea to buy a mbp especially after reading this and other similar threads. Can anyone chime in with their experience? Thanks

After various Apple reps for about an hour and a half, they told me that my MBP was indeed a DOA, and a replacement is imminent :)

No "flame" - just surprised to hear the MBP screen compared unfavorably to a $1000 Dell, which seems ridiculous. There are certainly a number of buyers finding a bad display, but I don't think that's the norm. I'm sitting here comparing this MBP to my 9-month old Acer Travelmate 8204 (and to my Son's Dell yesterday!), and this screen is the best I've ever seen in a notebook. This isn't trying to justify a "mistake," it's based upon what I see.

I hope Apple can fix/replace the problematic screens that many people are reporting - it's rapidly becoming reminiscent to the "horizontal lines" issue with the last-gen AluBooks from the end of 2005! Some had it, some didn't, some couldn't tell the difference.

You guys are scaring me now. I have a 2.16 C2D MBP on order (after sending my initial stock 2.33 model back due to huge uneven backlighting and latch issues) and its a CTO (glossy/2GB RAM). I cant stand to have issues....especially dead pixels and i don't want to have to send the machine in at all now that its CTO, as i'll be without a computer, which, is suicide given my course.

Overall, im getting the impression that this rev is *still less* plagued with issues compared to the last rev.

I'd guess that most Apple customers don't live near an Apple store.

If you have a problem that involves getting it repaired, they'll overnight you a box, you drop your notebook in and overnight it back, they fix it and overnight it back to you.

I've done that three times and unless your notebook is sent it for something that they don't have the solution for (or are out of parts), it's a very quick process.

Yeah, take it in. This is the same way that I made my purchase. They will be able to fix the problem for you or at least should.

Sabotage Theory

What if Dell got a mole or two on the MBP assembly line? That would explain all the QC problems!;)

Seriously, I think it all comes down to a few workers on the assembly line who simply don't perform up to par. Until the manufacturing process becomes the robofracturing process, there will always be a few bad Apples landing on our desks.

If the QC people at Apple are reading this, I'd like to throw out an idea. Why not slap a bar code on the case and have assemblers scan it so that there is a record of who worked on a particular machine. In time a trend would become apparent and the offending individuals could be replaced with more skilled workers.

On this pragmatic note I leave this thread to pursue other interests, namely getting my Mac Pro. Supersize me, Steve! :D

I've used Apples since 1984, just sent an 854-page book to press on one and won't be using anything else.

However, when I was at the Apple dealer yesterday, I opened two identical Word docs and put them side by side on a C2D 15" MBP with a matte display. I actually needed to move my head in order to see the doc on the right side of the display as brightly as the one on the left. There was a 20" ACD three inches above the MBP. It was hooked up to the MBP as an aux display. So I pushed the two docs up on it, and had no such problem. I didn't need to move my head to see both with equal brightness, even though the screen was several inches wider.

I'm not sure if this is a problem with backlighting or a very limited viewing angle, but it was a big enough annoyance that I wouldn't want that display machine if it was given to me. Of course, the salesperson, who didn't know the difference between a Core Duo and Core 2 Duo, assured me there was nothing wrong with the display. Good luck trying to return a machine to him.

I'd really like to get a new laptop now, but will now hold out to see if they try something new with their displays after they release Leopard.

Yeah. At least from my own I still think it's a viewing angle issue and not backlighting (since the backlighting itself seems to be even, and since it is possible to see the darker areas brighter at different viewing angles).
