The tip calculators that split the tip among all the members of the party take into account their meal value. Sure, this can still be done on a calculator, but it requires a bunch of extra steps.

Ex.

Jim's Meal - $13
John's Meal - $10
Jane's Meal - $6

Total Bill = $29

18% Tip = $5.22

Each persons share (equally divided) would be ($29 x .18) / 3 = $1.74

Each persons share by their meal total would be:
Jim - ($29 x .18) / ($13 / $29) = $2.35
John - ($29 x .18) / ($10 / $29) = $1.77
Jane - ($29 x .18) / ($16 / $29) = $1.10

Is there an iPhone tip calculator that does this? I've only seen ones that split the full bill in even parts.

From iMaze developer

I know a lot of you liked the concept of iMaze but hated the jerkiness of the ball. I got numerous bad reviews and I felt really bad. So, I worked hard and made the ball movement smooth 2 weeks back itself. But my previous bugfix update was stuck at Apple's approval process and so, I could not submit this update (yes, Apple allows only one update at a time). Thank god, Apple finally allowed me to submit last week and I am still waiting. I encourage you to try the version 1.1 when it gets posted and hopefully you will like it.

There's also an advanced version iMazePro that has 10 levels with unique challanges. But feel free to try the iMaze update before deciding about buying iMazePro.

Or you use a calculator and multiply each of their individual tabs by 1.18 to get their total and share of the tip combined.

Let's say I have a bill at BJ's Brewary for $39.75. I'm going to tip 18%. We had a cute waitress. ;)

Let's use the calculator.

Tap Calculator.
39.75 x .18 = 7.155 = tip
*memorize tip*
+39.75 = 46.90 = total, write down the total
Okay, now we know that the tip is $7.15 and the total is $46.90.

Let's use the program "Tip"

Tap Tip.
Type 39.75
Okay, now we know that the tip is $7.15 and the total is $46.90.

There you go.

It's not a tough concept, it save you steps. Instead of having to use a calculator, we can use a rich native application to use a calculator for us. That is why we have an iPhone SDK.

39.75 x 1.18 = 46.90 - that's what you sign on the cc slip and all you need to know. You're hitting about the same number of keys there as with the tip app (since you still have to type the total and the percentage you want to leave).

There is at least one [tip calculator that can split a bill by what each person actually has], I can't think of the name right now though.
If you happen to think of it, post back or send me a PM. I'd be interested to take a look.

Twinkle. At least it stopped crashing now. And in theory, its a nice app/idea. But here is the catch.. People use it to post the most inane, dull and boring posts I've ever seen. It's basically a brain fart dumping ground for the socially inept.

I love this App. We had tornado sirens all over Denver last night and it was fun to watch people in Twinkle talk about it and giving reports of tornados in the area.

Sort of proved its worth to me. It's a fun little app if you're into the Twittering thing.

Wow, Jane sounds pretty cheap if she can't pay an extra $.64 in tip, or better yet, just pay an even $8.

Exactly it saves steps and makes you more productive. Its all about less taps, not how well you learned how to use a calculator.

Another one. The game Tunnels. It has the potential to be amazing but as it stands its crap. Free so shouldn't really complain, but crap nonethless. Its just frustratingly difficult. If the tunnels you were flying through were just a bit wider it would be amazing, as it stands its just silly IMHO.

Good lord, just round up, take 10% and double it and get on with your day! :D

$4 x 2 = $8.

If you're feeling slightly cheaper just make the total $47 for a $7.25 tip which is $0.10 more than you got for almost zero effort.

Almost all of the time for me the simple solution is the best, but we have a couple of friends who insist on a detailed accounting of what each person had at a restaurant. If there was an iPhone app that would take care of that kind of retentive way of dividing bills, I'd be interested in it. So far, though, that seems not to exist for iPhone.

Handy Tip on the Palm (free) does it. iPhone needs that too, for those of us who are tired of the back of the napkin accounting that people like this impose.

No need for commentary on how our companions behave. I already agree!

We need to complain

We need to get this thread to the top of the forum. The app store is ridiculous. How many apps do we need tailored to little kids. Why would I put my iphone in the hands of a small child. How many flashlight, lighter, or other blinking apps do we need. Duplicate and useless apps need to go. It's making a mockery of the apps store. Let's get some apps that people can be excited about.

No offense, but what business is it of yours (or any of us) how many apps for children are developed? Personally, I don't think there can be too many. I'm planning on getting an iPod Touch for my kids to use and I'd like a nice selection of applications out there. If there's a bunch of crap...well, I'll just ignore those applications.

Given I used to play the games this was based on back on pre-x86 computers and it was nothing but ASCII symbols scrolling across the screen I may be a bit biased, but the difficulty feels about right to me. It's difficult, but highly addicting.

I had nominated Tie-a-Tie Deluxe a few days ago, but not everyone agreed with me :)

One that I think everyone would agree with being "craptastic", though, is Balloonacy. It is IMPOSSIBLE to control that game. Makes me really appreciate DizzyBee!

There is actually a category for crap apps on my site (it can be found here). If any of you have some you really detest (and I've certainly seen a few on this thread) let us know and we'll feature it on the site.

I don't really care about the apps for kids. Point is that the app store looks unprofessional. I know there are developers out there who can take full advantage of the iPhone's capabilities. Instead we have a bunch of apps that turn my phone into a flashlight. I want to be excited about apps that extend the iPhone's abilities. I think everyone wants apps that will fill the holes that Apple didn't; apps that close the argument that Blackberries or Voyagers are better (not that I don't already think the iPhone is better). Apps like Netshare (I know it got pulled but still it was useful), Datacase, Pandora, and Simplify Media are examples of great app ideas. A repository of apps that show a picture of a cigarette lighter or make sound effects seems beneath what is arguably the most powerful mobile platform.

I know I can't be the only one that is looking for something just a little bit better.

I have to mostly agree with you, part of the reason I started this thread. The App Store is pretty good but its becoming cluttered with a lot of junk. I dont agree with your kiddie apps idea but what you say about flashlights and the sort I am with you completely.

Unfortunately there is another side to the coin, Apple cannot reject Apps submitted that dont breach any of the rules and regulations, meaning developers are just submitting whatever they feel like, hence you have about a million flashlight and solitaire games on there!!

Another thought I had recently that may help would be the implementation of better sectioning in the App Store. At the moment it is becoming the victim of its own success with over a 1000 apps in 3 catagories alone!! Say for example when you accessed the Games section under the Categories tab, it would then take you onto another screen of Game listed by genre: action (56), sports (78) etc etc.

Also maybe have a tab under the games tab of highest rated with the reviews, I would think that that would start to seperate the good from the down right bad :). This method does add an element of complication but I think overall it would make navigation for what you want easier especially for the Games section. It could even be implemented with a toggle at the top to switch between that and what it looks like at the moment? I think the Weather category is probably not in need of this treatment at the moment lol :) What do you all think?

Also another crap app: Avoid the Update to Cave Copter, awful, doesnt work!!

Anyhow my craplist is as follows:

AppEngines: All of there books are such a waste of space and clutter the store pretty badly. They should really have one app to distribute all of the books. Especially as well as I gather it they are distributing free books for a price??

Just because you don't like the books doesn't mean they are crap, I've paid for and read multiple AppEngines books. I like the fact that each book is simple app. If I want to read a book I just tap it and it's there, seconds later. I don't want to start an application, go to a library and then find a book. Also once I've read the book I just unistall it.

As to the cost, I'm happy to pay the money for AppEngines to package up a Project Gutenberg book in a format that makes it readable. The price is so cheap it's not worth worrying about. They give 20% of their profit to Project Gutenberg anyway.

If you don't like them just don't look in the eBooks category.

For anyone obsessed over this tip calculator...I really hope I am never in a restaurant with you! To have to split a bill down to exact cents on what everyone owes is ridiculous, petty and childish.
So, you have a $29 bill, divided by 4 people, each person throw in $7 or $8 (for a larger tip) and be done with it! Why do people have to be so anal about exact dollars and cents on what someone owes!?!?!

I never understood the tip calculators either....tips can easily be calculated in someones head, or use the normal iphone calculator! No need to be so anal and exact about gratuities!

All the instant messaging Apps... I'm STILL waiting for a "good" one.

BeeJive doesn't look very promising.

I'm waiting for a SIMPLE AIM app that looks like SMS. I love SMS's clean interface and I wish there was an AIM app that looked like SMS.

I would LOVE AIM.app if they would just fix the annoying suggestion bubble getting in the way of the top set of keys. MobileChat figured out how to put the bubble above the words so, why can't AOL do it?
