Ok folks, I've had my i7 8GB 1TB iMac since Nov. 26 and this machine is incredible. I thought I had the perfect system. THEN, out of sheer curiosity, I decide to check out the forums @ Macrumors. Yellow tinge, noisy HD, etc.

So what do I do? Yep, obsessively check the screen (27") and yes, there is a slight yellow tinge at the bottom. And yes, the 1TB Seagate makes seeking noises (which by the way, I've been hearing for the past 22 years of PC / hard drive use).

So as far as I was concerned, my system was functioning perfectly well until I read about the OCD Mac types who exchange their system 6 or 7 times expecting a different result. I would not even have the time to do such a thing nor the stomach lining. As for the "I paid $xxxx so I deserve perfection" argument, get real. I have friends who've spent $50+K on BMWs and have various issues. My $32K Accord is excellent but not perfect (rattles in various places, some fixed, some not).

This is my first Mac desktop and it is by far the quietest computer I've ever owned. I am used to a helluva lot more noise from a computer and hard drive seeking noises don't even register. My point is that there are more important things in life than seeking perfection from your Mac. If the system is acceptable TO YOU, enjoy it and move on. Don't let the Howie Mandel wannabes on this forum put you on an exchange merry-go-round for issues that are still unresolved by Apple.

I think the funny part of this is that the people who exchange their computer six or seven times obviously don't need it for anything.

Mac users.

Look hard enough for anything you will find it.

But as the saying goes, work smart not hard. This forum would be the smart place to go to find problems with your machine.

Yeah, unless the HD fails so what if it is a bit noisy? I can hear my MBP's HD and the 40 GB replacement HD that was in my 12" PB was noisy.

I just checked my 17" MBP's LED screen for yellow tinge, and you know what? It has a slight yellow tinge on the bottom of the screen. Something I haven't noticed in 1 year and 8 months of using it.

I mean now I have seen screens that had the yellow tinge badly and I myself would get it replaced as well. But, if it is as slight as my MBP's is why bother getting it replaced? I didn't notice it at all until I looked for it.

I do not believe I have ever had a computer with an entirely quiet hard drive. Perfection is an unattainable bar.

I know yellowing is bad but could it be a calibration issue and a program or the adjustment settings of the mac fix it or make it not as bad

...and if the issues go unresolved towards the end of your first year, buy applecare so if something does break, you might get lucky and get the i12 in a "few" years:D

Before you go belittling peoples' problems with their iMacs, remember that the i5 and i7 specifically were practically designed from the ground up for graphic designers, so yes, a yellow tinge is a HUGE issue for professionals. Also, some people use their iMac's in recording studios where silence is of utmost importance.

Just because you can live with the issues doesn't mean everyone else should have to.

agree 100%.

I'm with you on that, as I do both of those things. Basically, if it was not advertised that my system should be having these problems, then I'm going to try to get the device replaced, depending on how much I paid for it.

For something I paid $10.00, I could care less, but on the other hand, something that cost me over 2 grand, I'm going to be a bit picky. Everyone knows Mac's are a bit overpriced anyway, so why settle for less. If Apple wishes to charge such a high price for their items which are meant to represent true quality, then that's what I'd expect. Of course nothing is perfect, but you expect to get what you pay for.

Some people can deal with some things that others cannot deal with as slicecom stated.

If you value your computer over other components you own, you are going to be a bit more picky than you would for something you have a less concern for.

As for myself, this will be the first iMac that I purchase. I recommend that anyone in the market for the iMac just purchase the Apple Care plan, instead of wasting your time at the moment(Dec. Month, Wait Until Jan.) going back and forth trying to luck out to get a non defected system.

Once Jan. comes around, and I see the reports have went down tremendously, then I'll call up apple and tell them about my issues and get it replaced, or better yet, just wait until Jan. to purchase the iMac. :)

"Graphics professionals" is somewhat of an oxymoron. If you are using an iMac for pro use, you made a compromise. The iMac is a consumer product.

Wow, thats a load of crap if I have ever read some.

Owning a Macpro does not make you a better designer.

Not sure what you are talking about.

Lets not start that argument here. The i5 and i7 are amazing machines worthy of use by someone in the graphics profession... there, is that wording better? :D

To the OP, I agree with you 100% I have had the i7 since right around Thanksgiving. I have had zero issues with it. Then again, I havent even clicked on the yellow tinge thread because Im happy with what I have and I dont want to spend all my time fine tooth combing my iMac, I want to enjoy it.

Then again, to each their own. If people have the time and patience and they feel like it is important enough to stress over, so be it. "Important" is a subjective term, right?

I started taking photos at a semi pro level a while back. Mostly candid wedding and then actually doing the entire sets. With the way cameras are now my free work has somehow outdone a lot of pictures that cost over $500. I will do just fine with an i5 for what I do, but if I can't calibrate the yellow out, it goes back. If they keep coming back yellow ( which they won't) I'll step down to a 24" refurb. Or hackintosh.

You can't celebrate having the greatest screen in the world and expect people to accept yellowing.

As for the BMW problems. It's not like it sometimes it misses a shift and BMW says put up with it.

As it was said before. If you don't mind the problems, that's great. Just don't question other people that want what they paid for.

Actually, BMW is having trouble with the High Pressure Fuel pump in the 335i's and all BMW has done is extend our warranty on the pump. The engine has been out for 2 years and '09's are still having failures.

As long as these iMac's don't have the flickering display or blackouts in 2 years( at least to the extent as it is happening now) Apple>BMW when it comes to dealing with problems. :p

Though the BMW community is hoping the new N55 engine fixes the HPFP that is plaguing the N54.

That is a good argument and a fair point you have raised, but you also have to consider Apple's marketing practices vs. BMW. Does BMW make commercials comparing themselves to their main competitors with slogans like "just works" while pointing out defects of competitors? I know that is an old one, but you get my point, right? Apple has created some very large shoes to fill.

"Ultimate Driving Machine" is pretty similar. It's a comercial, they say crap like that. Expecting perfection is the flaw. Buying a first generation of anything will have a few wrinkles. Its part of the deal.

Forgot about that one, that is the same kind of language Apple use - "ultimate display". Well, there goes my argument out the window.

The screen is a big deal to me, and in fact is the main reason for getting the machine since I'm into photography. Has anybody ever bought a BMW because of the sweet fuel pump?

Dude, you captured the essence of what I was trying to say in far fewer words. Cheers! :D

A lot of the people on this forum are full of crap and are OCD and need to get laid or find better things to do with their time...just saying.

A bit defensive? I didn't say or imply mac pro, that was you. Also didn't say an iMac would make you a lesser designer, again that was you. iMac is meant for the consumer market, nothing more. Professional carpenters use professional tools.

what really grinds my gears is, as you outlined, when people get a replacement machine many times for small issues.

in my town we dont have an Apple store so machines are not replaced for small problems, only if the machine has been fixed a number times and is still faulty while in warranty.

ive had 2 battery replacements and a logic board replacement under warranty and GPU heat issues and a fried RAM slot which would require a new logic board after my warranty expired along with LCD whining and uneven LCD backlighting that was never fixed

if i lived where there was an Apple retail store i very well may have got a new machine and fixed all my problems. or maybe not and i shouldve purchased Apple Care to fix all these problems, but living with these problems and seeing people getting a new machine for little things such as yellow tinges and loud hard drive seeking really pisses me off.

That's quite possibly the stupidest thing I've read on these forums. An i5 or i7 iMac is tailored more toward graphic designers than any other computer in Apple's product line.

It's more powerful than a base MacPro (which I assume, because it has Pro in its name, must be the only Apple desktop you deem appropriate for graphics professionals) and costs hundreds less (thousands less if you subtract the cost of an inferior 30" Cinema Display).

Personally, I sold my "Pro" MacPro and Dell S-IPS "Pro" display for a 27" "consumer" iMac, and its an upgrade in every way (yes this display is better than my old Dell 2408) except for the yellow tinge problem.
