Ok your two issues are, 1: USB 2, do not!!! I repeat do not!! rely on USB2 for any kind of professional Audio or Video application work. If your doing any Audio or Video work you should be using Firewire.
2: 1 gig of ram is barely enough for audio or video work these days. I would advise you run at least 2 gigs if you want things to run smoothly.
3: You should also be running 7200 rpm ext drives in case your not.
If you follow those above rules your crashs should be few if non existant.
I Run Logic Pro 7.2 on a Macbook with 2 gigs of rams and it does not crash. I run a fair amount of plugs and soft synths alongside the audio tracks .
These are solid fast little machines and yes the internal 5400 rpm drive is very fast compared to previous 5400 rpm drives and yes I do run a external 7200 drive throught Firewire for all my audio files.

I was thinking of buying a FW drive that is powered through FW itself, are there any negative effects this will have apart from the battery drain? Or are all FW drives like this?

Also, you might have misinterpreted what I do. I am not a professional, otherwise I would have gotten a MBP, I just make movies in my spare time, and mostly this is for larger projects, so hence the cooperation. Starting in September, I will be a student at a seminary (for becoming Catholic priest), and they have also shown interest in someone who knows a bit about movie making, so maybe I will then be able to buy some better equipment, since I am now rather depleted after buying the Macbook+accesories. I will certainly upgrade fron iMovie to Final Cut Express (with educational discount) and after that maybe start thinking about RAM. I also hope I can convince them to get a decent camera.:)

I never install untested software on my mac. at least not in my main user. i create a dummy user and i test = install shareware, freeware and other untested software. if it runs for months without problems, i install it in my main user account.

Good idea, redAPPLE!

I think I should start doing that:)

My personal experience with OS X has been on an iBook G4, PowerBook G4, iMac G5, Power Mac G5, and my current machine a MacBook Pro; the only machine I've ever seen crash is the Power Mac G5. The other machines have been perfectly stable.

Why don't you recommend Mac for gamers? Have you heard of Bootcamp?

Well, it's not Mac, then is it? I do of course mention that you can also run Windows, but what I mean by gamers is really people that use their computers the way they use a console, purely for the best and newest games. They need power, expandibility, and such. To this day no intel Mac can offer this. When the Mac Pro comes out, this could of course change. Plus, if they only play games, you have a bunch of features that you can't use

Maybe I should have mentioned this, but most crashes occur in iMovie, and these projects take up dozens of GBs, I use an external hard drive for them.
Could it be that 1 GB RAM is not enough to work with thos kind of movies? And if yes, could that be causing the crashing?

might be it my MBP crashes once or twice when doing FCP with 1 gb ram.. after installing another 1 GB stick... no more crashes

and this thing is twice as fast as a maxed out last rev PB g4 17....

your missing the point, software shouldn't crash due to lack of memory.

it should run slowly, tell you your machine sucks, honestly anything is better than freaking crashing

No "gamers" use a laptop and the soft ones dont upgrade becasue they dont know how to upgrade a computer becasue they are all "non-hardware" involved ignoramousis who wouldnt know how to upgrade RAM even if the ram came with an instruction manual.

Totally off topic, but... you want to be a Catholic priest, and your sig is a link to a video called "the internet is for porn?"

It's a cool song, and I always wanted to make my own version. But seriously, the Church should really loosen up, just look at the Da Vinci Code, instead of handling it of like it was a direct attack on the Vatican or the bible, they should have just made it clear that it's a nice book but totally fiction, and if I had been there I would have made something like this to make it clear:
