The blacks of the mini LED are awesome. The Pro Motion smoothness is unlike anything I've ever seen on a computer.

So much so that I don't even want to use expensive external displays because they just aren't as good. Even the outrageously priced Pro XDR display doesn't do Pro Motion.

Apple, can you please make a reasonably priced 24 - 30" standalone display with mini-LED and Pro Motion. Like, yesterday. Thanks.

That's good to hear. I don't have mine yet but the screen is the #2 reason I'm buying a new Mac after Apple Silicon.

The 1000 nits and 120hz really pleasantly surprised me.

The refresh rate really stands out with Expose animations and dragging windows around. And watching a 4K video with black background is great.

I bought a 13" M1 MBP 3 months ago so I won't be buying a new MBP till probably 2 or 3 refreshes from now, but I had to swing by my local Best Buy to see these in person today. They only had the 14" but wow the 120Hz is nice. Its not my 280Hz monitor but it is awesome to see a Mac with something above 60Hz after (at least for me) nearly 5 years of regularly having several displays over 120Hz.

Unfortunately none of the new MBPs can output above 60hz to external displays, so ProMotion on external displays would require upscaling which is not ideal.

That's not correct. The HDMI port is limited to 60 Hz at 4K (it can go higher for lower resolutions), but the Thunderbolt ports do just fine at higher rates. Right now I'm typing this on a 4K monitor running at 144 Hz with my 16" M1 Max.

I'll just add that I've been using AdaptiveSync on my 38" UW on the new MBP, which also supports up to 144Hz. Haven't had any problems with it.

Some Youtuber said that it's only 500 nits max on regular content and you can't set it any higher.

I get that Apple set a limit so you don't accidentally switch it to 1000 units in a dark room and hurt your eyes. But what if I'm outside in the day light, does it still only allow 500 nits max?

Anyone tested it?

This guy tested exactly what you wondered and confirmed that the ambient light sensor housing inside the notch will know when you are under direct sunlight, with auto-brightness setting the display will unlock itself to HDR brightness even with SDR GUI.

Sweet. I literally saw this on Twitter 5 minutes before you posted.

This is great. Limiting it to 500 nits max manually is the right call. Accidentally hurting your eyes is not fun.

The new ones do and the “old” ones did as well. I had 144hz on my regular M1 and now my M1 Pro externally.

I am glad to hear that! Apples specifications just point out a 60hz limit, which I also found curious.

I don't know if you've tried, but if you haven't, go check a HDR video like this one on YouTube. It surprised me even more than the deep blacks. Specially the moments when the sun is directly onscreen.

I agree. The blacks even on the MacRumors forums look fantastic. I am in love with this screen.

is it better than iPad Pro m1 display?

I haven't seen one of those, but I imagine it is pretty similar. Now it makes me want to upgrade the iPad since I watch so much video there.

Specs-wise they sound effectively identical.

I bought the 14" MBP base model for the MiniLED display since I can now replace my 15" MacBook Pro and my 2018 12.9" iPad Pro. I considered a 2021 iPad Pro, but I prefer macOS to iPadOS and I like having a keyboard so now I can combine two machines into one.

It's hard to show the difference via an iPhone camera, but the new MacBook Pro screen is definitely better than my Pro Display XDR at HDR content imo. Especially if you look at the 3rd image you can see how the image is blooming into the borders on the Pro Display XDR, while the MBP screen's borders are still very black, and the contrast is just all around stronger.

I couldn't capture darker scenes without the phone going into night mode and blurring everything, but on really dark space scenes black levels are incredible on the MacBook Pro.

Add ProMotion and the "Pro XDR Display" at $5k is already dated.
