Thanks for the explanation about the filter lists but how do you know this. I mean, how can I find out myself that these are more or less the same? There are so many lists.

The current stable version - no, it uses the old API, not content blocker.
The new one (which will go to beta testing stage on monday) - sure, it is limited.

So the version we can install directly from the Apple Extensions page uses the old API? Will the current beta version use the new content blocker system? If we have the extension installed, will it automatically update to the new content blocker system version?

How do I know which lists to enable in Adguard? Are there lists that share the same rules which make them unnecessary?

When in Adguard settings, if you click "All filters" there is a description under each filter, and you can get more information by clicking the "Homepage" link next to each name. Aside from the filters avatar-adg mentioned, there are a few other filters in which disabling is worth considering:

Mobile ads filter & Mobile Safari filter - since we are talking about Adguard for the desktop, these can probably be disabled. Even when disabling them I haven't had any ads slip through.

EasyList - the English filter is based off this filter, so you'd have some overlapping filters if you enabled it. From what I've been told, EasyList can cause issues with some websites, and some slow rules within this filter have been replaced by newer and faster rules within the English filter. I've also been told when EasyList rules are updated, English filter includes those new rules automatically -- there is an automatic check validating the new rules.

Yes to all questions:)

Not true for Mobile Safari filter (that's why we have renamed it to "Safari filter").

Content blockers API has some differences that does not allow to use some old rules. Safari filter fixes these issues.

These are the lists I have now, are there more that are double and which I can disable? I suppose Dutch Filter and Easylist Dutch are the same too? Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification but it's still named "Mobile Safari filter" for me. Is the filter going to be renamed in the next update? Also the description reads "Special filter for Mobile Safari" so it's a bit misleading.

Yep, it will be renamed (also it should be already renamed in iOS app).

I've just bought an iMac (love it), but when I looked for OS X content blockers very little was to be seen. Is there any content blocker available that is as reliable as, say, Purify on iOS?

I played around with the different Safari content blockers and settled on Wipr. You just install it and forget it. It updates the block list in the background.

With Safari 9, Apple has brought the same style content blockers available on iOS to the Mac. They can be found in the Safari Extensions Gallery.

Note: The Extensions Gallery lists both new-style content blockers and old-style JavaScript-based extensions. It is not immediately apparent which extensions make use of the new content blocking mechanism, so don’t be confused that extensions like Adblock Plus, AdBlock and Ghostery are not listed here (they still use the old mechanism, although they are working on updates to support the new mechanism).

It appears that the new blockers don't work well with YouTube. There is usually a ~7 second pause before an ad-supported video is played.

Feel free to add your findings with these blockers to this post (it's a Wiki).

(Some) New Content Blockers:

  • Adamant
    • Somewhat slow.
    • Does not display YouTube advertisements, but leaves ~7 second pause with the YouTube Player black, then content plays.
    • Sometimes leaves blank space where ads were.
    • Possible issue blocking videos on sites that use google to host videos, sound is audible but video isn't ex. kissanime.com
    • Imgur album showing results with MacRumors, The Verge, and Reddit.
  • Ka-Block!
    • Speedy.
    • Does not display YouTube advertisements, but leaves ~7 second pause with the YouTube Player black, then content plays.
    • Often leaves large blank spaces where ads were.
    • Imgur album showing results with MacRumors, The Verge, and Reddit.
  • NoThirdParty
    • Is very speedy (if you are fine without having any media)
    • Blocks all third-party content on websites (including images)
    • Imgur album showing results with MacRumors, The Verge, and Reddit.
  • Roadblock
    • About the same as Ka-Block! in terms of speed.
    • Does not display YouTube advertisements, but leaves ~7 second pause with the YouTube Player black, then content plays.
    • Sometimes leave blank space where ads were.
    • Imgur album showing results from MacRumors, The Verge, and Reddit.
  • Wipr
    • Speedy.
    • Does not display YouTube advertisements, but leaves ~7 second pause with the YouTube Player black, then content plays.
    • Best in terms of blocking advertisements and filling space.
    • Imgur album showing results from MacRumors, The Verge, and Reddit.
So I'm wondering which ones do you think is the best? Which one do you find yourself using the most?
