The endless pain of burning a Mac OS X 10.4 cd

Hi all!

I am suffering a lot and burning even more cd's without any good outcome.

I got a toast file containing the Tiger disk 1 so that I can install it on a g3 iMac i just bought but...
I cannot burn a bootable disk.

I tried:
Imgburn on Windows 10
Diskutils on Mavericks
Toast 7 (I think) on mavericks, choosing copy CD and then choosing the toast file (slowest speed, made sure that image was never mounted)

The disk I obtain contains files and mounts fine but cannot be selected as startup disk.

I have no usb / firewire burner and no firewire mac so that I can use the iMac as target disk.

I am clueless, I've followed suggestions here and there on Internet but nothing gave me a working CD.

Try the images from here if you didn't get them from here in the first place. These are good images I've used every time I've installed Tiger.

You guessed correctly

I used the "Burn" application on my Power Mac G4 running Tiger.

In case anyone's wondering, on OpenBSD you can make bootable CDs from .toast files with cdio. Just treat it like an ISO.

# cdio tao file.toast

I made bootable OS X Tiger install disks using this method and they worked fine.

Burning a OS X CD from a Windows machine will never work. I've never had OS X Disk Utility fail to burn one that was correctly imaged and the toast to ISO trick works well when required.

I am here to end your suffering, as I know the solution! I have a clamshell which has a very similar CD drive to your iMac, and the solution is:

Burn - Home

burn-osx.sourceforge.io

(Requires another Mac)

Make sure you select “copy”. You have to use a good CD burner drive, preferably the oldest one you have that works. Old CD drives like reading CD-R’s burned by old CD burners. Dreamcast is like this as well.

My clamshell will boot anything burned by my Mac Mini G4’s original burner.

The cheap new USB DVD burner I own won’t burn anything the iBook can reliably read from for example.

New fresh cds.
Installed burn in mavericks, unzipped the file from the garden, didn't mount it, set it in "locked" to be sure.
Dragged it in burn, burned at slowest speed.

Nothing, zero, nada.

The cd is readable, I start the install from mac os 9 and it tells me "Startup disk was unable to select the install CD as startup disk. (-2)".

I am clueless.

I mean, unless something has changed fundamentally in Mavericks so that you can't burn ISOs for PPC machines (not a thing I'm pretty sure), it sounds like your writer might be bad or on its way out.

I used Toast in OSX Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo at the lowest speed on a CD-R.

It is the same burner I use for...
Anything.

The resulting cd is readable and working also in the iMac, is just not bootable.

The only potential issue could be that my mavericks is a hackintosh and not a real macintosh.

Could be a bad download. Did you verify the checksum on the .toast files?

Just FYI, the Tiger images from the Macintosh Garden were also non-bootable when I made them. I mean all different machines from Powerbook G3, Powerbook G4 and PowerMac G5 in my collections and a number of wasted CDs! Thankfully I used to work for the a computer recycling facility where we have a ton of those cds. I ended up using their copy of the Universal Tiger install which are 4 CDs. In fact, when I cloned them, they work, but I never had any luck with the ones off the Garden.

that’s really strange because i just burned them a couple days ago and they worked fine. My guess is that something is going wrong in the download or decompression that is causing some data corruption/loss

I am not sure what was going on, but I am suspecting the same.

I think this could be the best moment in my life (never needed it before, basically) to buy a CD-RW instead of burning endless garbage-ready plastic...

Probably doesn't help anyone here but it worked for me with cdio on OpenBSD -current. Unzipped using the command line unzip program. I can’t remember the version of unzip and I can’t check until after work, but it’s whatever version is in the ports tree at the moment. This was on an i386 T43p

I've used the suggested tool to decompress the zip file and, sadly, I obtain the same identical md5 on both Tiger_Disc1.toast files (one obtained using Archive Utility and the other using Unarchiver):
