I used Toast 10 iirc.

Probably doesn't help anyone here but it worked for me with cdio on OpenBSD -current. Unzipped using the command line unzip program. I can’t remember the version of unzip and I can’t check until after work, but it’s whatever version is in the ports tree at the moment. This was on an i386 T43p
Are you a collector of the last IBM Thinkpad ?

I tried using Toast 9 so far:
Open toast, click on copy, image file, burn at lowest speed...
Same result aka a readable but not bootable disc.

I will also try Toast 10.

Another thing!
I happen to have a fully working Tiger install on another Drive that I could connect via USB...
Is there any way to copy the data from that drive to the internal drive without blasting my working Mac Os 9 install?

Really thanks for this hint!

I've used the suggested tool to decompress the zip file and, sadly, I obtain the same identical md5 on both Tiger_Disc1.toast files (one obtained using Archive Utility and the other using Unarchiver):

I start losing hope.

That's the correct MD5 hash. I just tried it and get the same hash on the one I burned. So the problem is down to the burning software, your disk drive, or maybe even your actual CDs.

More of a user than a collector. I like them, but I use them pretty hard.

maybe dd onto a partition?
I am not sure that this can be done from within OS9, sorry, I think too much from within Linux.

Can you convert the toast file into an iso and dd it onto a USB stick? Maybe you can boot the iMac from USB.

Zero, I give up for today.
Tried toast and also tried the Iso available on archive.org, always same result.

Digging hard on the Internet a guy had the same identical error and fixed it cleaning the cd reader lens on the iMac.

I've ordered one now, if this doesn't work...

Surrender starts to feel like a decent idea.

The final chapter!

After burning 2000 cds, all not bootable but readable...
I've had an epiphany (silly me for not remembering earlier): damn, I can try to boot the mac mini g4 using those disks!

I forgot because it has been Linux ppc for ages so in my mind it is just a Linux server.

Pop a CD in, press c, boot without problems.
Another one...
The same...
Another one, the same...

Here's a little story about this diagnosis.

"Good morning Doctor, I feel lost, i think I am about to die. All my body is giving me pain and there is nothing I can do that will not give me pain."
"Calm down, explain me in details..."
"I touch my face and it hurts, I touch my leg and it hurts, I touch my eye and it hurts, I touch my back and it hurts..."

"You have a broken finger".

The damn cd reader is picky / dirty!
I wonder how it is possible that is mounts the cd but doesn't boot but frankly I am OK not knowing.

The cleaning cd kit will be here in days and in case that fails...
Bow that I know I have another mac i guess I can just use firewire target mode...

Hooray! :D

Glad you solved it eventually. :) This is why I have my MacOS install discs cloned to a Firewire drive and just boot off of that (luckily all my Macs have FW).

Hi everyone!

I totally forgot to report news, shame on me.

Long story short...
No way, no way to install ANY iso burned in ANY way on the planet on that little iMac.
I highly suspect that Jeroen is right and my drive is picky about the CD-R brand.
I will order and test Philips CD-R discs so that I can test and provide some feedback and...

I still miss Linux in order to make it triple boot so... :D

How could I install Mac Os 9 and X?
Ah, sweet old HDD Target mode!
