"This thing is awesome!" was my first thought..

i'm going to send out a mass sms to everyone I know to tell them to get one..
oh wait...I cant send sms to more than one person at a time on this...

ok well then I will take a picture of myself enjoying my new $600 iphone and mms everyone so they can see how cool I am...oh wait...i cant mms anyone from my iphone...

I know, I'll call everyone I know and leave a voicemail and when they call me back I can hear the jealousy in their voice as I listen on my new bose in-ear headphones...oh wait, I can't use headphones w/ my iphone

so I dispersed 100 carrier pigeons to all points of the globe to tell everyone to stick w/ the free phone they got when they signed up that can do all of these BASIC FUNCTIONS!
 
I really can't believe I'm replying to this troll... so I'll keep it short.

For starters I doubt you have an iPhone. If you did, the lack of the lame features you mention would fall from your mind when you started taking advantage of all the things your iPhone can do that your standard mobile cannot.

Go troll somewhere else.

there are phones out there at a fraction of the cost, and in some cases free, that perform these basic functions, I'm not saying those phones are better, I'm saying for $600 the iphone should include these "lame" functions that people use everyday.

and yes I have an 8gb, i'd take a pic and send it to your phone, but well, ya know...

There are not many phones with a full size headphone jack
software features can be added and even my Q didn't do MMS

I would suggest that for $600 the iPhone should include exactly what they said it would. At that point you can then decide if you like what they are selling.

Did everyone fail econ 101?

If you want MMS and any other features the iPhone lacks, go buy a phone that does that. Pair it with an iPod and go nuts.

But for the love of Pete, can we stop pretending that the capabilities of the phone are some great mystery that people could only unravel by spending 600 clams first?

I wouldn't care normally but the endless parade of iPhone victims is just wearing me down.

We all know what it won't do. The 10,000th person saying it doesn't make it more valid.
 
Gee, you can take a picture and use Safari to post that pic directly to MacRumors from the iPhone. Gee what does that.

Headphone jack. Sorry but why use other headphones when the Apple headphones have a built in mic and play/pause/skip controls. Or if you are insistent on using other headphones, get an adapter for the smaller jack. Big deal.

iPhone functions:
Phone first.
Email Web second.
iPod third.

If I really want to listen to music I will probably use my Nano before my iPhone. Yeah the iPod on iPhone is nice, especially with cover flow and things like movies and videos that my Nano doesn't do, but I listen to music (other than at home) in the car, at the gym, and when I snowboard, all of which I would use my Nano for not my iPhone. With the possible exception of the car. And at home, I have my Apple TV streaming to my TV/Stereo or my iTunes streaming via Airport Express/AirTunes to my backyard or bedroom stereo.
 
There are tradeoffs for everything you buy, no company can be everything to everybody.
Not only that, the stuff you listed are personal preferences.
Personally I can care less about sending multiple SMS's ( You shouldn't either since you have the pigeons )
Or being able to send MMS, where the later one is possible via email to their phone # plus the @ XXX.com.
You can also use your headphones with an adapter, as it would be worse if the case breaks due to the design of the phone.

To me the important features are email, safari and phone the rest is all gravy to me.
Enjoy the phone for what it is and what it does for you, but if that's not enough for your situation you need to take it back asap.

So you shelled out $600 without reading up on the phone at all? Sounds silly. I take pics and email them to my contacts if needed. Can do it easily in the phone. I use google maps 2X per week at least and the driving directions is just as good as GPS IMO, this is not on those free phones. I use Safari which you can NOT do on the free phones and the Ipod is amazing and the ability to watch widescreen films is great as well. No free phone I know can do this. What about visual voicemail? Easy 3 way calling? Weather widget? SMS that keeps the whole conversation on screen?

Give me a break dude. If you bought the Iphone without any research, you are the moron. Plenty of people LOVE their phone and wouldn't do without. There is NO PHONE on the market that does what the Iphone does.

I sold a chocolate phone which was HORRIBLE and we also got rid of a blackberry which the Iphone kills.

Also, one last thing, you can use your bose headphones with a $10 adapter they sell at the apple store. Bought one yesterday for my A8's and it works great.

Now stop your BS and go buy an Iphone (cuz I am sure you do not have one, or if you do, have no idea what you are doing with it)

very well put, great post. We all knew what the phone could and couldn't do, if you didn't do your research, you're the dummy. by the way, NO regrets here, extremely happy with my iPhone.
 
Macworld.com had a very nice piece which, I think, sums up most of the arguments that the OP has. The article compared the iPhone to the iPod when it first came out.

In short, the iPhone doesn't do anything new or have features that other phones don't already have. And it is priced at the top end of the market. It takes what Apple (i.e. Steve Jobs) thinks are the essential features of the product, and makes those features a joy to use. Nothing was as easy and straight-forward as an iPod when it came out, and nothing is as fun to use as the iPhone. In time, other features will be added, but not at the cost of simplicity.

And while I wonder how many new features will be added via software update, and not simply touted as a "new feature" of iPhone 2G, the possibility IS there, so I give Apple the benefit of the doubt on that. I fully expect the ability to send multiple SMSs on this version, along with other comparable minor improvements.

Bingo... user experience is everything.

A product's price point is not determined solely by the sum of its bells and whistles, but by demand versus supply, industrial design (you're gonna honestly compare an aluminum and glass casing with gaps tightened to less than a millimeter to a slapped-together case of cheap plastic?), and ease/joy of use. The interface alone on the iPhone is something Treo and Blackberry can't claim to have, so it's a totally moot point to be discussing their prices in comparison just as it would be a moot point to base my salary in one job function on what it was in some entirely unrelated job function. Oranges and, er, Apples...

If iPod is any indication, iPhone has tremendous opportunity to take the consumer market by storm... because it is so damned freaking easy, intuitive and fun to use. Corporations buy what's cheap because they need it. Individuals will pay through the nose for things that they perceive as "cool".

When I look at the iPhone, and then I look at the myriad visions of the future we had in Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. I'm actually quite surprised that few sci-fi people had envisioned a design so wicked AND user-friendly.

I'm not out to prove I have one and I THOUGHT I did my homework on the iphone, I assumed you could do all of those simple things i mentioned. yes it is amazing, yes there is nothing like it, my point, which so far every single one of you brainiacs has missed, is that for $600 WHY DOESNT IT DO WHAT ALL OTHER PHONES COME STANDARD WITH...IF IT DID IT WOULD BE WORTH THE MONEY.

Where did your research take you that said the iPhone would do the things that it cannot?

first of all any body with common sense should know to always look into a product before you purchase it. I know everybodys personal preferences are diffrent but why in the hell would you buy a 600 dollar phone just to get all pissed about the basic features.Isnt that why you bought the iPhone. Because it doesn't just have basic features but features that no other phone on the market has. If you wanted just basic features you should of got one for 20 dollars. Stop crying

Do ALL phone come standard with these things? Or do most? Clearly Apple isn't about doing things the normal way, if they were this phone wouldn't have been as great as it is. But thats a double EGDE sword, as we lose something we're used to..

Now I don't believe you have an iPhone, there is with out a doubt a way to get MMS from people with the iPhone, and there is a way to send them also. Its not fast, but it works.

again i'm not out to prove anything, i'm merely inquiring about the lack of basic features, no big deal, all the other features are great, i just want to send and receive some @#$%ing pictures...no need to be rude

if all you wanted to do was send and receive pictures, you'd use email. It's seamless on the iphone.

Alright, recieving a picture is easy, someone sends you them, you get a username, and password, so on to the site your phone tells you ( viewmymessage.com) sign it, and there the MMS is!

Send it is a big harder, but iLounge has a guide, so I'll point you there.

No way to MMS, but you can still end pics following the way I showed you....as for not telling you. I assumed you'd go do a quick google. But, either way, you know now.
 
I've been reading most of the iPhone threads since I can't buy one until my contract with Verizon is up in December.

I'm shocked at all the newbie troll posts taking shots at the iPhone. I guess the release of the iPhone after the Zune and Vista flops has the MS Fan boys hurtin bad.
