Yeah just try and flash with any modified 512mb rom you can find on the forum.

EDIT:
heres for ur card:

Thanks Cindori! :)

But I think ChaosDeadlock has an issue with that ROM being 'corrupt' for some reason (he mentioned it in the later posts). I believe it was because of some 10.6 osx issue? Should I still flash it with it and see because Rominator checked it and had okayed it too!

Mark Booth mentions something about the "virgin Apple ROM" , ie, the 4870.ROM - is this the same one that is posted in the "dump the 4890 ROM" thread? Because I believe that is a modified 512mb RAM for MAC - which worked for him and many other before him incl. Rominator.

I think we're just getting to the end of this query session :)

489a-zdfc

Hi all,

I'm trying to bring 489a-zdfc card to work, partial success so far.

I got an old Mac pro ver 1,1

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
SMC Version (system): 1.7f10

This is what displayed in PCI cards:

ATI Radeon HD 4890:

Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4890
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
Slot: Slot-2
PCIe Lane Width: x1
VRAM (Total): 1024 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x9460
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-B7710C-176
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.318
Displays:
ASUS VH236H:
Resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz
Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
Display Serial Number: 94LMTF072691
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Display Connector:
Status: No Display Connected

I downloaded this rom
https://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=218835&d=1269039713
modified efi with zeus tool and flashed the card.

Weird things:
- screen capture doesn't capture anything
- display calibration doesn't calibrate anything (although applying different profiles changes look slightly).

My display is crappy, some cheap ASUS 1920x1200 panel, and the original NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GTcard didn't work well either. That's why I started this adventure with a new card, but its been quite painful so far: roms, cables...

How do you think guys, it's possible to make it?

--Rom

UPDATE
after I applied driver patch in Zeus - calibration is ok, seems working. And the display is recognized, see info above.

But screen captures are still empty, which makes work on the computer not possible. Plus font are blurry, but they were same on Nvidia as well, don't know why. The near linux desktop works just fine with all cards and the image is crisp and clear.

UPDATE2
No, it's not working at all (except that display works). There is no acceleration: windows are barely moving, ugly screen magnifying.

The card looks very similar to the image you posted, although they all look alike.

This is what lable on the box says:

Do you mean patch from this thread?
https://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1077090.html

What kind of rom should I use for flashing? Something special for this card only?

Thanks!

that one should work fine with zeus auto-generate firmware and patch.

WAIT; you downloaded a RV770.bin!? Why? RV770 = ATI 4870, not 4890. No wonder your card behaves like crap.

You can find a working rom for your card here:
http://groths.se/atiflashingtool/ROMS.zip

I tried both. Still no luck.
Anyway, is all this supposed to work on 10.6.8?

What do I need from these packages?

As usual no luck with my Sapphire 4890 New Edition. Still works under 10.6.6 without problem (but using the 10.6.3 patching method). I’m a little confused as this was one of the cards clearly on the recommended list and I had to go out of my way to get one. Will this card ever be supported fully by Zeus? It would be really nice if that was to happen. I tried just the 10.6.8 update via. Zeus, then I tried updating with the 10.6.3 patches method. Neither method worked for me under 10.6.8. (Repaired permissions after both attempts of course.)

supported by zeus? zeus is not supporting anything, it's all in the drivers. drivers made by apple.
driver patches in zeus is just adding 4890 id to apple's drivers.
and they're made by netkas, not me

perhaps lion will bring more luck

So finally, thanks to fouel, I got the power cables for my ATI HD4870 512MB a few days back!

- Today I fixed the ATI card in SLOT 1 and my old NVIDIA in SLOT 2.
- Then I connected both the power cables to the back of the card and to the board.
- I connected the DVI cable to the right most slot of the nvidia card and powered on my MAC PRO...it started with the chime and then it froze.

I started it again and the front white light keeps blinking rapidly. I tried to Reseat the RAM etc. but it keeps blinking. I then removed the ATI card and switched on - it could boot into SAFE mode like before.

Is there a specific manner to connect the power cables of ATI to the board?

Help! :(

Switch the cards in their slots. If it doesn't help, remove the GT7300, boot to DOS (CD/USB), reflash, boot to OS X.

I have to yet flash the ATI card. Switching the slots won't make a difference to flashing right?

And secondly, my NVIDIA display doesn't work unless booted in Safe Mode. As a result, I cannot boot via CD/USB for flashing! :( So will have to try switching the slots!

You don't need to have the 7300 in unless the 4870 has a bad BIOS and won't boot at all. Put only your ATI card in and boot from your DOS CD by holding C.

Hmm I was thinking of doing it via Zeus flash tool because I'm not very well versed with DOS booting. Secondly, the mac pro doesn't boot at all except in safe mode - in which the superdrive is disabled. You think the USB booting should work? Any links on how to make that possible?

Thanks so mch! :)

some cards simply crasch when trying to boot OSX, try boot windows to rule out hardware issues.

when clear, go bootcd / windows flashing. guide's in the guide.

Thank you Fouel and Cindori for all the guidance and help! :)

I could successfully flash my Ati HD4870 512mb to my Snow leopard osx 10.6! :)

Initially the mac pro wouldn't boot to the OSX even if I removed the ATI card. I figured that there was a little loose connection in tightening the screw plate around the graphic card slots. Later on, the ATI power cables seem to obstruct some capacitors I felt. So i neatly arranged them around the 'fan' cabinet and switched on the mac pro. It booted via safe mode (since the nvidia couldn't boot the main os). I then used Zeus to flash the ATI with the ROM that fouel had given (thanks fouel :) )...2 minutes later the message blinked that it was successfully flashed.

I switched off, removed nvidia and put ATI in slot 1. Connected by DVI - DVI monitor and it booted directly into OSX :) I have attached screenshot of the system profiler!

I opened an FCP project and then put in some heavy filters and it rendered smoothly and quickly! I also played a movie and it worked fine! :)

Currently its connected to two displays - DVI to DVI monitor and DVI to HDMI LCD TV screen!

Thanks so much! Saved me from spending huge money to apple! :)
