the i5 is 200 points ahead on it's CPU mark rating and 400 points ahead on single thread. But the i7 uses significantly less power.

I suppose I can swap processors and Geekbench them, I just hate the TIM I had bought as it's messy to work with, so swapping processors is a PITA. I think for raw performance that the i5 would be better for gaming. But the i7 is technically a "high end" CPU. I'll do some more research. I think the most notable feature is the i7 has hyper threading capabilities.

Also, I could upgrade to an i7 4770, but in true Mac Pro spirit, I can also upgrade to a Xeon E3 1275L. Same performance but less power usage, and it'll be like a Mac Pro (Kinda) as they use Xeon CPU's. I compared benchmarks on the system right now and it is somewhat equivalent to a base 2013 Mac Pro, minus a gpu (because they have 2). (My CPU pulls ahead a little bit, but my GPU lacks a little bit compared to the base D300.)

Games don't care about hyperthreading, single core performance is still the most important for gaming.

Just got my Optiplex 7010 setup. Easy AF. i7/16/2TB SSD. Dual booting 14/15 Everything works like a champ. Getting 3300 in GB5 on Multi. Not bad for finding in a dumpster.

Has anyone found a 4K display suitable for gaming that gets even close to a 4K or 5K iMac in quality? I want to build a hackintosh but without the right display. I'm lost. I thought I was saved when I picked up the Acer Predator XB273K (4K, 10 bit, 120hz, 4k, 8bit 144hz) at Best Buy for $750 only to learn it has fake HDR (HDR400), horrible calibration, and light bleed compared to my 4K 21" sitting next to it. This is primo+ for Windows Hardware but now it's got me considering the higher end X27 and Asus models due to full 10Bit-HDR1000 support, all of the recent iMac's are just 500 nits of brightness short of being genuine HDR but the DCI-P3 calibration is unmatched in beauty, looking at a display that originally cost almost as much as my iMac and it being worse is a bit dismaying. Has anyone found anything worth looking at?

The BenQ monitors (for gaming) seem to have garnered some sound reviews.

Check them out on YouTube.

I suppose the days are numbered for hackintoshs. It was a fun ride while it lasted, but with Apple moving away from intel, they're going to be at a dead end

just getting started on my first Hackintosh so I figured I'd check in on this thread. I don't do reddit so I may ask some questions here as I go along

would you say a 2019 Mac Pro is a dead end then?

yes. An expensive one at that. 32 pcie lanes shared over all the slots in 2
X16 pools. Thunderbolt is an add-oncard that snags 4 lanes out of one of the 16. Pcie m.2 adapters with a pcie switch have issues with sleep. Etc. Seriously. It’s an overpriced mess.

Slot 1 and Slot 3 have dedicated x16 lanes. 32 other lanes are shared over all the other slots and devices in two x16 pools (A and B). A device does not "snag" lanes. The lanes are shared. For example, Slot 2 and Slot 4 can get almost all their x16 bandwidth if other devices are not transmitting at the same time. Page 11 of the Mac Pro Technology Overview describes the layout. All the Thunderbolt controllers (two, four, or six of them) use pool B. The only thing messy in your statement is the sleep issue or do you think there is a problem with the way the lanes are setup? The overpriced part may have to do with all the lanes - do you want a cheaper Mac Pro with fewer lanes?

PowerBook 5,9 and PowerMac 11,2 shipped with Tiger 10.4.2 in 2005, and only got Leopard 10.5.8 by 2009. While that was technically almost 4 years of current software, Apple is on a yearly cycle now and I think Apple will still have at least 1 or 2 more Intel OS releases but there is precedence if there isn't. There could also be a Universal OS like 10.5 that bridges the gap as well.

Let me ask you this. Would you want to spend 40,000 on one computer today, with the knowledge that Apple was about to change platforms?

Possibly, people still bought PowerMacs before the Intel switch.

if I had the budget and use for one I probably would

point is, just because apple is moving to arm on (for now) some machines doesn't render every current Mac or Hackintosh a dead end

they should be good for at five years of os updates if not more

If I needed it today, my answer would be 100% Yes.

To me, nothing stands still because I bought it.
I bought a new truck, they made another one.
I bought a new house, they built another one.
I bought a new TV, they made another one.

Whoever "they" was didn't stop producing a newer better version of what I bought. Nor do I have the thought that a company needs to stop progressing at the point that I spent a dollar amount on whatever they created.

If I have to make a purchase ever, then when do I make that purchase? Who's decision is it that I purchase something for myself? Is it someone else's decision what I buy? Not really. The same as it is not my decision to make for another person.

I can't wait to see Apple trying to convince professionals (video editors, music producers, architects and others) to use ARM Macs. It will be hilarious. :))
But we all know Apple, it can afford to waist billions in marketing to promote anything. After all, the first iPhone was a 2G phone. ;-)
