Yea audio interfaces are pretty finicky when it comes to adapters and cards. I checked the Focusrite website for compatibility, aside from pcie cards that worked, there was one adapter from Sonnet, but I don't think I saw any 400 to 800 cables. I'll check their site again. I've got a pcie card by Siig and it's working well, but I did notice a 10C increase in cpu diode temp when the audio interface is on. A 5C increase seems more the norm. Also, the pci fan is running around 950+rpm

I'm a little lost and confused, but I've been working on an old original 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 with Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to do mostly Art/Design and pre-press work for screenprinting with Adobe CS5 for the last couple years. I'd love to upgrade it if possible and utilize my new Adobe CC subscription on the newest OSX/hardware and get a bit more useful GPU. Looking for a lead in the right direction towards the right steps to doing so if worthwhile. I'll likely be getting a Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 to pair it with and use independently. Otherwise, I do have a $1-2k budget to work with if I should just move on and build/buy something else.

Some details on the setup currently:
Note: I had problems with my monitor(s) not outputting at one point about a year ago. I took apart and cleaned the whole machine to only find that I could only get it to work again with the GPU in the second slot. Never figured out why or what is damaged.

Hardware Overview:
Model Name:Mac Pro
Model Identifier:MacPro1,1
Processor Name:Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors:2
Total Number Of Cores:4
L2 Cache (per processor):4 MB
Memory:5 GB
Bus Speed:1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version:MP11.005C.B08
ATI Radeon X1900 XT:
Cinema:

Resolution:1680 x 1050
LC-32LB261U:
Resolution:1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz

Thanks and let me know if I should have a separate thread or have posted elsewhere as this is my first post!

If it's been working well for you..why sell it? just keep it. Based on your budget...yeah...keep it.

I'm a little lost and confused,

If you do decide to upgrade, I have a 2009 MP set up as a 12 Core 2.93GHz, 16GB Ram, ATI 5770 GPU, 1.5TB boot HDD with 10.7.3, which was set up for running Final Cut Pro 7.0.3. I also have a Mac Flashed nVIDIA GTX 680 GPU which will do more and bigger displays than the ATI 5770 or your current x1900.

I picked up a 2008 Mac Pro eight-core 3.0 Xeon with 24 gig of RAM at the end of October. Since that time I've installed a USB 3.0 card (four ports) and a 512gb SSD on an OWC PCIe adapter. Now I'm looking for a good low profile card to replace the GEForce 8800XT that came with it. I know some of the midrange Firepro line is single slot low profile and I've gathered OS X recognizes some but not all Firepros. So any advice from my fellow readers would be most appreciated.

(I'm looking for a low profile card because I like my current arrangement and don't want to reshuffle the PCIe drive and USB card -- but that's not set in stone and I'd be willing to compromise if I found a great double slot card at an even greater price. I watch videos, surf the web and want something that can play 4k video for the future: my four-year old likes some video games and I've been known to play Portal on occasion but I really don't need a machine that can play Crysis at 300fps on 4k with all settings on max).

If a GTX 680 Mac Flashed GPU would work, I have a 2GB version I was getting ready to put on EBAY. I know it works with out issues on a 2009 Mac Pro with OS X as far back as 10.6.8. It was my main GPU until I upgraded to a GTX 980 Ti.

In 10.6.8 the GTX 680 works, but without graphics acceleration. Driver support and graphic acceleration starts with OS X 10.8.3.

Just picked up a 2010 Mac Pro 2.4 eight core for $1000. I've always wanted one of these machines! Should be nice upgrade from the 2011 Mac Mini i7 2.0 server I've been using in my "B" room for a few years. Prior to the mini I had a G5 Dual 2.0 back when they were new. In fact, I bought right before the announcement switch to Intel chips.

Anyway, ordered up a USB 3 card, 32gb ram, OWC Accelsior S: PCIe to 2.5" 6Gb/s SATA SSD, some new HDDs, and a R9 280x card that has been flashed for the Mac. I'll see how much fun that is for a week or so.....then I'll probably order up a pair of x5680s and another 32gb of ram. Then I'll have a Margarita. Main use will be FCPX/Pro Tools and other random post work. Can't wait!

I found it on Amazon. The seller was Coretek Computers out of North Carolina. I gave them a call, talked about the machine - they even offered up the serial # - and puller the trigger. It'll be here Tuesday. Gonna be a long holiday weekend.

Well, I finally did it. After many many iMacs, Mac book Pros, a PowerMac G5, and a hackintosh I have gone and bought a 2009 8 core Mac Pro with 64GB ram, a 5770 and a 480GB SSD plus a few other extra useful cards.

Regarding best version of OS X... do you need to maintain compatibility with any older software? If yes, let that be your guide as far as which version you choose.

For me, I run 10.10.5 Yosemite on my Mac Pro 5,1 and 10.7.5 Lion on my Mac Mini. I run 10.7.5 for compatibility with Final Cut Pro 7 to support access to legacy video projects in that format.

I am avoiding 10.11.x El Capitan for as long as I can.

has anyones Mac Pros died after intense use? do they always just last?

- coming from a MacBook Pro user who tried to use it like a Mac Pro (Ferrari up a mountain)

My 4,1 can run at 100% loading 24/7 but still quiet and cool. The Mac Pro is designed to work under heavy load for a prolong period of time, don't' worry about that.

YES... just be sure to clean out the DUST every once in awhile. Even if you use one of those foam shields on the front, dust can still collect, it just takes longer.

It's been said, computers last longer if you just leave then ON, that it's the on/off cycles that stress some parts to earlier failure.

I too have a Mac Pro that remains ON 24/7. Only things which get turned OFF are some peripherals such as RAIDs and external HDD enclosures, 2 of 4 monitors which only get used during edit sessions, BD burner... the 2009 4,1/5,1, 2008 2,1, 2006 1,1 Mac Pros and G5 have all been beasts. I'm expecting my latest 2011 Mac Pro 5,1 to more of the same.

I just sold my Mac Pro 3,1 3.2GHz X 2 Quadcore with 16gb RAM, 1TB HD and Apple 5770 for USD490. What a solid campaigner it had been.

In its place now:
MP 5,1
2.4 GHz x 2 Quad Core
32GB RAM
1TB Samsung 840 Evo SSD (attached to Accelsior S PCIe 6GB/s adaptor)
2 x 500GB Samsung Evo SSD
1 WD 2TB HD
Nvidia GTX970 4GB

Aye, aye...will get round to replacing the processors soon.
