The iMac is amazing!

I'd love to get an iMac. If they bring back Target Display Mode, my next upgrade will probably be an iMac.

You do not need Target Display Mode. Air Display works just as well, or Synergy Desktop is what I use with my MacBook Neo.

I can't afford one at the moment, but I'd get yellow, 1TB/32GB, the moment I could.

My wife might veto the yellow in favour of blue or green...

My main gripe with the iMac was the loss of target display mode over a decade ago. I’d easily buy an old M1 iMac or two for use as a monitor, cheaper than the ASD.

Yes that's why I stopped buying iMacs. Having a gorgeous display welded to ageing components is such a waste.

I would like to see a modern take on the iMac G4. However, back in those days displays were small and computers were huge. Now it's the other way around so maybe it would probably be a little top heavy.

I'd use my "smaller thing allows cramming more thing into the same big space" argument, but I don't think that would apply to computers

I’ll never buy the Studio Display & mini combo. Ever. I don’t want it and it’s greedy of Apple to try to push people into spending the extra cash.

...and there are plenty of other people who will never buy an iMac when they have the option of a Mini/Studio with a choice of display- plus people who don't want a desktop but will buy a Studio Display as a MacBook Pro dock.

It's hard to deny that the base 5k iMac at $1800 was always the best value-for-money that Apple offered (they've actually shown with the Studio Display that they can sell the display alone for $1600!) - I suspect that Apple were finding that unsustainable, esp. with the desktop marketshare falling (doubly so for Apple Silicon where desktops don't have much power advantage over laptops).

Once Apple made a display that (apparently) they could sell for $1600 to Mac Studio buyers and Mac Pro users and MacBook users who wanted a desktop dock, the prospect of a $1800 Mac Pro with the same display vanished.

Its also notable that a 32GB/1TB/32-core GPU M1 Mac Studio + Studio Display combo - with a storage and GPU bump - came in at $4000, which was exactly the same as the top-of-the-range i9 Intel iMac once you'd bumped the SSD and RAM to match... It was only the lower-end iMac models that would have been more expensive to replace with a comparable Mini/Studio Display combo.
