I love my iPhone, dont get me wrong. When I purchased it, I was excited not only for what it had, but for what it COULD have.

In the 3 months the phone as been out, what has Apple given us? Nothing so far. Not a thing. Not a single new program. What is Apple going to give us? iTunes wifi access so we can buy music...

So let me get this straight Mr. Jobs... The only thing your entire programming department could muster in the 3 months this phone has been on the market, is another way for you to drain the pockets of your loyal customers? This is a joke right? You are going to put another icon on our phone, to make it easier for us to spend money on your already overpriced songs? Is this some type of joke?

People hacked this phone because you have no intentions of ever giving it more functionality. Something as simple as ichat couldnt make it into an update by now? How about a free game? How about an icon that just gives us the middle finger whenever we push it?
 
Well maybe, just maybe, having given all the iPhone fetishists something to play with, all those Apple developers are now working hard again on getting the resources-starved OSX Leopard into a release state after it was seriously delayed thanks to satisfying the desires of the must-have brigade....
 
iPhone devs and Leopard devs are not the same people. So your argument holds no water.
 
Errr.... Did the iPod have software enhancements after the first 3 months? (was at least 10 months before they added windows support)

Did Max OS X have software enhancements after the first 3 months? (actually about 8 months between 10.0 and 10.1)

Come to think of it, I can't think of a single phone in which the developers gave us new (free) software only a few months later.

You, sir, are expecting WAY too much.
 
I expect way too much? Ok, lets just stop expecting anything from Apple, and just feed them our money.

I am insulted that the ONLY update is a way to buy more from Apple. Thats absolutely ridiculous.
 
Apply to Apple.

I love it when people that have barely programmed complain about the release of software.

I restored my phone. I'm kinda over the whole hacking thing. I still have iTunes 7.4.1, and ringtones are really the only necessary modification that I need. I realized that I became obsessed with checking Installer.app for updates, reading forums, helping spread the word! :rolleyes: It was consuming all of my free time, and for what? So I can catch a butterfly by tilting my phone? I mean, yeah ... it's cool, but still pointless.

and home button preferences ...
and international preferences (keyboards, region formats, etc) ...
and TV out ...
and EDGE roaming on / off ...
and the floating iPod controller ...

So assuming that 1.1.1 comes out by the end of the week, in the 64 working days after the iPhone launch (during which time they launched the iPod touch and were preparing to launch the iPhone internationally, both of which undoubtedly took time and resources), Apple will have released two bug-fix updates and one fairly major functionality update to the iPhone...

If this doesn't meet your expectations, do a little research on how quickly after launch Windows Mobile, PALM, BlackBerry and Nokia smartphones get updated.

Not too much, just too soon. You sounds like you have no idea or experience in any corporate development enviroment.

Like stated above, if you can program faster, please apply to Apple.

Since other companies and hardware seldom see a update any sooner, if ever, I would say Apple is more than active in iPhone development. This is the first phone I have ever have to get maintence releases at all. For which im extremely happy for.

I wouldn't say he is asking for "WAY too much."

Just give me an eBook reader and a PDF reader and I'd be happy for awhile.

It has a PDF reader.

Step 1: Email yourself the PDF.
Step 2: Open PDF from Mail.

I can even open PDFs of AutoCAD drawings on my phone, which has proven to be useful on many occasions.
 
Sheesh. I've worked in a three month software release cycle and it was hell. You have six weeks to try to fix the previous cycle's bugs and then get unrealistically scheduled features in (because you have to prioritize your manager's manager's pet features). This stage always lasts three weeks longer (because the devs use the first QA cycle as an extension of the dev cycle - any missing features are entered as bugs) then you have weekly, and eventually biweekly QA handoffs, and then spend the last week and the last weekend working 15 hour days to make the release date. And finally you release buggy code that you're ashamed to be associated with.

As a developer myself, I'm interested in how Apple does it. As someone who has been forced to push out buggy code (with the "intention" to fix the bugs in a later release, which hardly ever happens) I'd rather have something that has missing some features and doesn't crash.

I really do want new apps on my iPhone, but I'll only start ranting if there's nothing new before Christmas.

The insults Apple throws at you?? Wow, you need to remove a platter from your hard drive and hold it up ifo your face to view an insult-hurler.

You bought the iPhone for what it *could* have? Nice. You imagine something that some rollout product should have, figure it's practically up to vaporware status since you could imagine it, and that makes it close enough to good to buy the rollout version? Forget taking platter from hard drive and holding it up to face. Take CPU from machine and park it in that spacious mansion between the ears. Attach with baling wire and bits of duct tape to cardiovascular system, and good luck with the revised computations.

Ok I apologize for the mini flames. Yes those are mini flames. You should be dragged into a project status meeting at Apple and get properly toasted.

This post is what happened when I pressed the special icon on MY iPhone. Yah, so the thing is a little primitive yet. These things happen.
 
Development does take time, but it has been done

All Apple has to do is actually start talking to the 3rd party development community to let them know the general areas they are changing so they can prepare and make changes.

They have developers building the apps that people want for free, I can't understand why they would want to stop that by non-communication, or by design. I think that is what is frustrating the majority of iPhone users right now.

Again, I'm guessing you don't work in software development? Am I right?

To allow third party developers to prepare, Apple would need to release a public API. By doing so, Apple would be making a contract with the developers that they would support that API and wouldn't change it without warning. Making an API public is a huge step for any software development team to make, larger than the release of any internally developed application or an SDK that builds on the API. They have to get it right first time. Setting out "general areas" being changed wouldn't be any good to developers since it's the details that break applications.

I haven't heard anything that suggests Apple isn't going to release an API or SDK. What I've heard is, it'll be released when it's ready.

Until then those of you who have hacked your iPhones will have to live with the prospect that a software update will break something.
 
go and buy a nokia / samsung / motorolla... and then wait to see how long it is before you get a software update. I applaud apple for even providing any form of updates in the first place!
 
I love this phone for where it is now, thanks to the 3rd party efforts. Without them, I wouldn't spend much time with this baby, aside from the usual phone conversations and checking the stock market. I agree Apple hasn't offered much, knowing its full potential. But then again, I didn't expect much aside from what the iPhone came with. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying its other potentials, realized by the Installer sources. ;)

In one aspect I hear what you're saying and agree. On the other side of the coin, Apple calls the iPhone a smartphone. Users can generally extend the functionality of smartphones. Or perhaps Apple is using the definition of a smartphone in 1999. :p

Ha Ha, the 1990's called, they want their 2D cad program back! To all the others that are excited about keyboards that will type in Swahili or other languages, and the other pedly updates supposedly coming, I say Baaaaa, iSheep.
