go and buy a nokia / samsung / motorolla... and then wait to see how long it is before you get a software update. I applaud apple for even providing any form of updates in the first place!

As I've mentioned in other threads, I get the impression a number of people here aren't cell phone junkies. I went through IIRC four different firmware revisions in the time I had my Moto RAZR, from 09/04 to 11/06. In the time I had my Moto A1200 (11/06 to 08/07) I went through about five different firmware revisions. Cell phone manufacturers do actually update their firmware on a relatively regular basis. However, their issue is rather that they don't really advertise it anywhere near as well as Apple does. Just making the point.

Well, that and how about we not tar and feather Apple over what is not in an update that hasn't been released yet? Personally I'd love to see them shower a bit of love on the existing apps (better contact management features, more robust calendar options) before showering us with the new....

To all the others that are excited about keyboards that will type in Swahili or other languages, and the other pedly updates supposedly coming, I say Baaaaa, iSheep.
Being excited about international settings or not doesn't magically erase the fact that Apple had to spend time and resources developing them in order to launch the iPhone internationally.

There's a difference between being an iSheep and understanding that Apple hasn't exactly been doing nothing on the iPhone platform for the last three months, despite what some folks expectations are.

I expect way too much? Ok, lets just stop expecting anything from Apple, and just feed them our money.

I am insulted that the ONLY update is a way to buy more from Apple. Thats absolutely ridiculous.

Not true - it also includes the unlocked iPhone break.

That's TWO features.

Ha Ha, the 1990's called, they want their 2D cad program back!

That has got to be the most uninformed comment I've read this week.

If you are so upset then quit buying their products. I love my phone and I could care less about the updates. The installer app has kept me quite busy and there are plenty of apps you can add on. I am sick of people crying about Apple lately. No one forced you to buy the phone and second it is the first one they have done so cut them some freakin slack already and quit starting new threads about crying.

It all takes time...

I love my iPhone, dont get me wrong. When I purchased it, I was excited not only for what it had, but for what it COULD have.

In the 3 months the phone as been out, what has Apple given us? Nothing so far. Not a thing. Not a single new program. What is Apple going to give us? iTunes wifi access so we can buy music...

So let me get this straight Mr. Jobs... The only thing your entire programming department could muster in the 3 months this phone has been on the market, is another way for you to drain the pockets of your loyal customers? This is a joke right? You are going to put another icon on our phone, to make it easier for us to spend money on your already overpriced songs? Is this some type of joke?

People hacked this phone because you have no intentions of ever giving it more functionality. Something as simple as ichat couldnt make it into an update by now? How about a free game? How about an icon that just gives us the middle finger whenever we push it?

You have to understand that software development does not happen in a one step phase. There has to be a business driver - competitive pressure, customer input, innovations, etc. This takes time to prioritize.

Next, you have to develop....this is probably the smallest portion of the cycle.

Test. This is the most critical. Do we want our calls to drop because someone sends a txt message?

Package for windows and mac

Train the field -- people in the call center, at ATT, and at apple.

Delivery.

It will take 8-12 months for major functionality change. This is why we will probably see things like the ability to disable edge in 1.1.1 and not MMS and iChat until 1.2.

Just my 2 cents.

Enough already

these forums are flooded with people who are part of this insane entitlement culture that we live in. "I expect" "I'm insulted..." " I deserve..."
It really is getting old. There isn't a person on here who does not know what they are buying into when they get these products. People really need to zip it because they just sound like whiny little bit----.
There is nothing wrong with stating wishes for features or frustrations about lack there of or whatever, but when you get into your little rants, your argument loses credibility.
Just chill.

I'm still ticked off that I have to actually dial the number on my fax machine. I mean sheesh, I've had a fax machine for years you'd think by now I would be able to telepathically dial numbers on it.

Who twisted the OP's arm behind his back, dragged him to the store and forced him to buy the iPhone in the first place? I think that person should be held just as accountable for this as Apple is.

Sheesh, what a tuff crowd.. I agree that Apple should be adding common smartphone apps such as MMS, copy & paste, bluetooth file exchange, email picture save to phone etc. Even when Uncle Walt asked Steve in his interview before the iPhone was released where were all the features such as MMS, copy paste, Java support, Steve said new features would be implimented in an early software release. I think 3 months after the initial release is as good a time as any for this initial software feature update.

You are so far off base it's hard to comment.

Apple flat out said there'd be no 3rd party apps for the iPhone in the near future. There was never a promise that the iPhone would have more apps than what was demoed in January at MacWorld.

During the build up to release, Apple came out in favor of web 2.0 apps running in Safari. They released some developer info and tips on how to build cool "apps" using this model.

People--I guess not you--but many people, have been asking for wifi iTunes for a long time. Now here it is. Guess what? YOU NEVER HAVE TO CLICK ON IT.

There was no gun to your head when you bought the iphone. No gun forcing you to purchase iTunes music.

Your energy would be better spent working with some of the iPhone Dev guys to get whatever new cool apps you need developed. You mention games, which is a joke and iChat, which I believe there are a few options for already. Not sure what else you need but I'm sure you can work to get it done.

I thought this post was going to be about personal insults that apple retail employees threw at us but I guess I was wrong.. I still want to share my story. Walked into the apple store to get my iphone fixed... I walked up to the genius bar because there wasn't I wait. I tell the guy.. "I have an iphone I need help fixing.." He stops me and says "What's an Iphone?" Turns out I was at the Sony Store... darn!"
THE END

I think that many of us bought the iPhone for a number of reasons, what is was at release, which we all accepted when we plopped down our $600, and also in the back of our minds, we bought it for what we thought or hoped it could become, based on our history with Apple.

So we're happy with our phones, we love them, and the fact the the Dev community has enhanced them has been a blessing and a curse. We've seen 1st hand what the phone is capable of (blessing), but we are not seeing the same innovation from Apple, and are potentially staring down the barrel of losing those apps (curse). It's this curse that makes the lack of updates from Apple all the more frustrating.

I'm squarely on the fence, one part of me says "Hey, you bought it for what it did, knowing what it lacked and you were cool with that, so no biggie.", and the other side says "Come on Apple, you've always shown the world how much better you are, what are you waiting for!!!!"

The reality is, each time we click "check for updates" we'll be both elated and frustrated whether there is an update or not.

If this doesn't meet your expectations, do a little research on how quickly after launch Windows Mobile, PALM, BlackBerry and Nokia smartphones get updated.

It`s an iPhone. Not a Nokia, Palm, Blackberry or Windows Mobile. When Apple announced there`d not be any third party apps I was a little disappointed but thought it`d keep the iPhone trouble free and safe so why not. Also I assumed Apple will very soon have all sorts of apps/games available through iTunes store for buying. Now I wont mind paying for stuff which is worth it`s price. But the fact is there isnt a single app Apple has made available for iPhone till date(a couple if you count youtube and wifi iTMS).

Now it was Apple`s duty to provide as many apps as possible.Free or otherwise. And dont tell me it`s just been 2 months. iPhone has been in the works for years and we had an up an running version of iPhone OS as early as Jan. They had a lot of time. What they lack is maybe man power or willingness. No company in the world can create software of each and every kind. Neither can Apple. So IMO closing the iPhone from 3rd party apps was a bad decision to start with, what`s made it worse is lack of any real offerings from Apple.

The best thing to do will be to allow atleast some major software companies to create apps for iPhone/iTouch and make it available through iTune store. That way they keep a check on apps quality, satisfies iPhone owners and still earn money. I wont mind paying anywhere between 5- 15$ for an iPhone app/game if I find it`s worth it.

/End Rant

BTW I m still waiting for my very first iPod (ie iPhone ). Should be here in a few days. I know I m gonna love it for whatever it is. But still it`d be icing on the cake if there were more apps available for it.(Web 2.0 dont really count do they?)

Hmmm, I see the point the OP is making but really they've taken all those devs back to the Leopard development to now get that shipped on time (and rightly so). Once that's done and bug fixed (10.5.1 at least) we can expect more for the phone.

You do realise there's features to come when Leopard comes right (possibly A2DP, Tasks)?

What annoys me slightly is the attitude to using native apps that Apple is taking. If I was Apple I would be banking on the fact that openng up just enough would potentially make the iPhone a truly ubiquitous device.

The missing hardware on the iPod Touch (bluetooth, volume dial) would bug me more than missing software.

Bottom line: sit tight and wait a handful of months. Th software will come.

It is all greed and buisness. You will most likely see more applications and functionality in the next revision of iPhone (iPhone 2 ?), which you most likely have to buy to get the new stuff. When they release products like this, they carefully plan and base everything on how to maximize profit... But with making this iPhone locked and exclusive, they really went the wrong path.

Apple has not only shown greed, but deceit as well. I've been looking (and posting) on the Apple forums most of the day. This morning, there were tons of posts complaining about 1.1.1's killing ringtones and third-party apps. Everyone was blasting Apple for their actions. All of those posts have been removed. There was even a post about disappearing posts - LOL. It's gone as well. It is Apple's forum and they have the right to edit and remove as they see fit. But if you're looking to see what people really think, you'll not find it at Apple.

The main thing about the iPhone that irritates me is that it is useless as an organizer. Even on a Razr, you can make changes to your calendar. The iPhone is no PDA; I think Steve's forgotten what a PDA is. No 3rd party SDK; no built-in HyperCard; why, the phone's huge for what it does. And you can't change the battery? Who are these people, and what have they done with Apple Computer? Too bad it was Jobs who came back, and not Woz.
/rant :)

Apple has not only shown greed, but deceit as well.
How have they show deceit exactly? They've said from the outset that this device will only work with AT&T and that third party apps will not be supported. You've all bought the device knowing full well those were the conditions, so if you're all moaning over at Apple Discussions why shouldn't they just remove the posts?

Apple have been honest this would happen all along. Some people just choose not to hear what they don't like.

Deleting posts that violate Apple's published TOS = deceit?

Not guaranteeing that the iPhone update will work with every hack on earth = greed?

Tell us -- on whatever product you produce (there is one, isn't there), do you guarantee that product will work with every hack and tweak to the product that millions of users might make? You do employ people to watch and study every single hack, and to test your product updates on every one of those hacks, right? And, you do allow people to violate the terms of your contract, right? And, you do warrant the product to work, even when people modify it after purchase, in ways you may not even know about, right?

Greed and deceit? On that score, I think it is the whiners and iPhone hackers who are being greedy here.

What??????   I most definitely punched in the info for a followup dental appointment at 11:30 tomorrow on my iPhone calendar this afternoon, while sitting in the dentist's chair at 3pm. So clearly one CAN make calendar updates on the iPhone!! :)

I make changers to my calendar all the time. At work, at the doctors office, and on the road. In fact I use the iPhone's calendar more then I ever used iCal, and use iCal more now that I have the iPhone.

I've ached for a fax machine with a rotary dialing mechanism on it :)
