Yeah the imac is cool but I want a computer that will last me my entire doctorate. Im willing to waste all my student loan on a quad intel any time... I need something that will still kick ass in 4-5 years (perhaps with a video card upgrade). Im doing a doctor in music and need over 2 gig of ram for my project (over the limit of the imac) wich uses 2 gestural controlers and a heavy bank of samples, I also plan on developing a game in my spare time using the unreal 3 engine (not alone) and need to dual boot to xp, be able to upgrade video card (not powerfull enough on imac for ut2007), etc...

you would probably do better by splitting the loan in half, buying something now, and then buying another computer 2-3 years down the line, because no computer purchased now will last 4-5 years. (or it will, but you will be aching to play the newest games on 10fps 2-3 years down the line)

So you suggest buying a dual core mactel instead of a quad, and then see what get released in 2 years? You may be right as the new macs are always awesome and much better than the previous ones, but if I can upgrade the video cards, perhaps the processors and that the quad cores are well supported, woudnt I have something powerfull enough to work out 5 years with?

(I will also have some rendering to do so a quad would certainly helps for that too)

They'll have blu-ray drives in them by 2007. I expect a smaller enclosure due to less heat being produced, hopefully a new design... How about a backlit keyboard, and bt mighty mouse?

Correct.

Where did you get that idea? The formats aren't mutually exclusive.

They are in direct competition with each other for dominance in the HiDef market - how could Apple support using HD-DVD when they have signed on as a Blu-Ray member. From a technical standpoint they are NOT COMPATIBLE - that is why we see two different types of players thus far. Perhaps I am not getting your meaning of "mutually exclusive". I guess Apple could offer both but........

Apple Throws Support Behind Blu-ray

At CeBIT in Germany, Apple announced that it would support Blu-ray as its choice for the next generation of DVDs. Blu-ray has been locked in a battle for industry support with competing format HD-DVD since last year.
Apple will become a member of the Blu-ray Disc Association, and will hold a seat on the group's board.

"Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "Consumers are already creating stunning HD content with Apple's leading video editing applications like iMovie HD and are anxiously awaiting a way to burn their own high def DVDs."
Apple joins several other big-name Blu-ray backers, including Dell, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung and LG, as well as movie studios Walt Disney and Twentieth Century Fox.

From Apple's own site:

"Apple is committed to both emerging high definition DVD standards—Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. Apple is an active member of the DVD Forum which developed the HD DVD standard, and last month joined the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association."

Both of our "quotes" are about a year old - so I guess time will shortly tell if Apple will go both ways - I had not seen that one before. On a personal note I would prefer HD-DVD due to cost - 50 GB - limited use for me.

I don't know about you guys, but i just want the freaking things to come out.. I'm buying one the second they are announced.. I was thinking about just getting an iMac, but I'd rather spend more and get a total beast. But I don't want to wait!

2x750? That'll add $1000. I'm down.
