Ohhhh mmmaaaannn :( That is bad... There is no reason NOT to put handsfree in

Apple is trying to make it inconvenient to use it as a phone device. (fortunately the wired aspect works) Apple wants it to be used as a media device so those are the only profiles they provided.

Good explanation. I wish I knew the one for why they won't let you skip tracks with bluetooth.

Wow, it won't? I would have thought that would have fallen under the Audio Video Remote Control Profile. That sure will make people with bluetooth pairing and control in their cars unhappy.

Oh you are absolutely right. And thats why I have a hate/love/hate relationship with apple. They release a gret new product and intentially gimp it by excluding gps and handsfree

Yea they let you pause but not fastforward :p

I figure the GPS thing is a forced up-sell. It worked on me. I want GPS functionality but I'm tethering my phone for data so I don't need the 3G aspect. So, I was stuck getting the 3G for GPS alone. bummer.

Any thoughts or news as to when Skype will go 3G like Verizon??

Reading the threads a couple months back on Skype's website there was some back and forth regarding the update to their existing app which would enable VoIP over 3G (this now exists for Verizon customers with certain devices). It was said that the app had been submitted to Apple and that Skype was awaiting approval.

I'm beginning to wonder if in fact Apple is holding this approval close-to-chest to coincide with the release/launch of iPhone HD (or whatever moniker) with mounting evidence of front-facing camera. This would not only be a huge value-add for owners of that device but also to iPad 3G owners - especially with OS4.0 multi-tasking and push notifications coming in the fall.

When, I had an iPod touch, I used iCall to call any phone I wanted except I couldn't receive incoming calls. I'm going to download iCall on my iPad and try it.

Probably best used with a Bluetooth headset or BT Stereo Headphones. Also if you are out and about with WiFi access this would be great, otherwise spend the $20 a year for a MagicJack.

What are you saying? BT headset handsfree profile does not work with iPad

I have fring set up with gizmo5/gv and push notifications are not working very well, ie it won't let me answer. Anyone else having such issues?

I just bought the Sony Ericsson hbh-is800 Bluetooth headphones for the sole purpose of taking Skype calls without having to whip the iPad out of my man purse and hold it like an idiot, i guess I should have researched if they work with skype first.

Any info emerging that indicates I'll be able to use them at some point in the near future? From the previous posts, am I right to think a dedicated skype app or even ios4 wouldn't fix this issue?

There have been some on here that espouse that they believe when ios4 is launched that the bt headset profile will be there. I on the otherhand have my doubts, so wired may be best way at this point.

Im just surprised the jb community hasn't found a way to put the bt stack of the iphone on the ipod touch and/or ipad. I really do wish I had this feature.

NO. Google Voice requires an operating phone to work. It does not make calls on it's own. It just connects your phone to the other party and/or forwards calls made to a Google voice number to your own phone.

Apples and oranges.

but you can use google voice for free sms

Wake up....

There are two programs you can use on the ipad. the first one is Truephone, you have to pay for their service to try it out they give you $0.50 free and afterwards each call is about $0.05.

the next one is Whistle Phone and that is a free service but you get the popup ads. Ive used both of them and they both work great on the ipad

I put whistle phone on my iPad and am happy with it. To be honest, with the exception of signing up, installing the app, and making a couple test calls (without headset) I haven't used it much. But, it was easy and worked like a champ on the couple test calls. Very happy for free.

The ads in the beginning of each call did not bother me in the least. If someone said that, for free, you can pretty much call anyone you want but it will take 20seconds to connect you, you'd be all over it. Okay, maybe not everyone, but I would... and am.

Why are you saying to wake up? I use nimbuzz+gv/gizmo for free unlimited calling. I'm just pissed due to lack of btheadset profile

For anyone that already has ooma for your home , they have released an iPhone app that is supposed to work with the ipad. If you have ooma premeire you get 250 mins free a month. Haven't tried it yet. I don't know if the app supports backgroud operation, as that would be great to recieve calls. Currently app is 9.99, hope they lower the price.
