This is completely true, and I’d like to add an unrelated fact: my only qualm with this forum is that as a person who mainly uses iOS devices, this forum is pointless if you don’t have the latest device. Both on the iPhone and iPad forums, people basically only discuss the latest devices, so I can’t contribute to the vast majority of discussions. People also mostly use the latest iOS versions, which I never have.

The iPad forum is far better at discussing a wider (not wide, just wider) range of iPads. The iPhone forum is the latest or nothing. The iOS versions forum is the latest or nothing. I have an iPhone Xʀ on iOS 12, I don’t have anything to say about 99.9% of forum threads.

Looking at how many iPhone battery health threads there are I wonder why my 2018 iPad Pro 11" A12X Bionic does not show theirs?

Also, be aware these are the expected iPads within the next 52 weeks.

- iPad Pro M3
- iPad Air M2
- iPad mini A16 Bionic
- iPad A15 Bionic

I wonder when the 2024 iPad A15 Bionic comes out if it will have more than 6.75 years of iOS Security Update support. So that it would be up for replacement by the 2031 model.

Well, with the small developmental progress of iPadOS one can contribute to a lot of topics, can’t one? iPadOS 15 till 17 are not that different. Obviously there are additions and changes, but IMHO the greater part of the functionality (or issues 🙃) is still the same. YMMV.

Checking the forums of those iPadOS versions, there isn’t much I can contribute to. This forum is geared towards the latest of everything. If you don’t have it, there aren’t many topics you can contribute to. If you try to start discussions about older devices, you won’t get many replies. It’s too latest-centric. I’m not complaining, it’s just an observation. I’ve practically vanished from the iPhone subforum.

Like I said, the iPad forum is a little better at that, but not perfect. Latest iPadOS versions discussions gravitate towards performance and battery life (to which I can only contribute cumulative observations of other people’s posts), or specific latest version features or issues (which I don’t have and I don’t know about).

On Macs, you have subforums for older devices. Not here. I use: an iPhone Xʀ on iOS 12, an iPhone 6s on iOS 10, a 9.7-inch iPad Pro on iOS 12, and an iPad Air 5 on iPadOS 15. A quick browse through the iPhone, iPad, and iOS versions subforums will show you there isn’t much I can say.

iPads are better than iPhones. My 11” iPad gets way more use than my 14 pro.
My iPhone is what I consider my 21st Century Swiss Army knife. It's not always the best tool for what I'm doing, but when I'm away from my desk it's almost always the tool in my pocket or within arm's reach somewhere and it gets the job done eventually.

Sticking with that theme, my iPad is more like my 21st Century notebook. Paper notebook mind you, not laptop. It's where I pre-plan ideas, take notes, host project meetings on the go, etc. Sometimes makes me feel like I have that digital hardback book that Penny used to use on Inspector Gadget or something. Probably goes without saying that I haven't regretted splurging for the top end cellular model for one second.

The iPad mini 6 might be my favorite iPad of all time just due to the USB-C port. Now I have a mini for when I just want to read an e-book or something, but also enough power and connectivity to hook it up to a monitor and use it as my desktop computer with keyboard and mouse. If the next model is capable of full monitor support, I will definitely trade up.

Is it a good thing that it’s more quiet here though? Haha…… just implies that there’s not much going on in iPad land.

I still love my iPads. Plural. But they do only get used sparingly if I’m honest.

I regret purchasing my 2018 iPad Pro 11" A12X Bionic. Replacing the cracked screen is like buying any base model iPad. I'd likely replace it by 2026.

It would be cheaper to buy a base model iPad whenever another base model iPad gets any damage.

Still rocking a 2017 base iPad and dying for the new Air to come out and upgrade. The speakers on this one broke 1.5 years in and it made no $ sense to fix or replace. Without an ad blocker in use, surfing in Safari turns it into a paperweight but it soldiers on for daily use. Basically iPad at home, iPhone SE2 when I leave. An exception is traveling, the iPad is heavily used on planes and in hotels.

I don’t need to upgrade to an Air, but I want to. If the new one indeed comes with an M2 then I should be able to run that for 6-7 years or so, barring a real malfunction.

To tide you over, install an ad block like Wipr and get a BT speaker. I have a six year old UE Boom which sounds better than my 13" iPadPro's speakers.

Should be out within 6 months before April 2024.

Is it more toxic than the "laptop replacement" and what constitute a "pro" device? Especially toxic when iPad news are posted at the main home page rather than the subforum. You all know which type of comments a 14/16 inch OLED (or miniLED) iPad with a M3 and 24 GB RAM, 4GB SSD would get. Hopefully, Apple gives us dual boot to close the mouths of the worst commenters that often displays a mixture of arrogance, envy and complete lack of understanding.

Unfortunately the complaints wont stop. They'll just pivot to complaints about how their iPad doesn't give them the same performance as the MacBooks due to heat throttling.

I found at least one user who decided to keep using the older version of iOS, iPadOS, older devices, or maybe forced to do so...

I just wish Apple brings back the simplicity of iOS 12/13 and iPadOS 13 for I am one of the few users that don't find a use for widgets on the home screen and they just waste screen space instead of more apps and less pages...

I am thinking that if there is no Oct 2023/Nov 2023 event for iPad and Mac, they will just have a press release on their website...

Will the iPad forums as active as the iPhone once the new devices are announced/released? We'll see...

Oh, been doing both for years. I look forward to not having to pack a BT speaker someday. I don’t need great sound in hotel rooms, but I like quiet tunes and white noise at night.

Man, that »What's a Computer?« ad really brought out the worst in people.

Change really touches a nerve for some, especially the old guard of Mac users. I'm not sure why, because Apple has course corrected with the Mac in a big way and proven they're still willing to dump massive amounts of R&D into improving it more and more by way of Apple Silicon.

I have to admit, since May this year when I purchased a mini 6, I use my iPad 95% more than my 14PM. That’ll all probably change for a few weeks when I get my 15PM on Friday. I love how easily it is to transport my mini 6 everywhere, and how bigger the screen is compared to my 14PM.

I would love a mini for books etc, just so expensive here. AU, bit hard to justify to when I already have a 11" M1.
