I loved the size of the nexus 7–large but could still be easily palmed in one hand and could fit in a back pocket. I wish Apple made an iOS device in that size.

They'd call it a phone these days. I read that there are lots of 7-inch phones in Asia.

The nice thing about a tablet, though, is that it's more rectangular form factor.

I'm really looking forward to the home screen capabilities that should arrive next week. Yes, Android has had them since at least 2012, but it will be nice to have these with the iPad Mini.
For me, along with the "pro" ipad design apps they've come out with, the ipad with ipad os is slowly replacing my macbook.

A lot of people are moving in that direction but I run my MacBook Pros with 4K and QHD external monitors and the software that I use isn't available on iOS. My workplace gives us MacBook Pros or Lenovos (our choice). A lot of people choose Macs.

Yeah I don’t like the aspect ratio of phones these days for consumption (as I mostly do reading). I much prefer 4:3 or 3:2, but would settle for 16:9. What is it now, 21:9? Sheesh. Also iPads have multitasking and landscape lock, which would be sad to lose if the 7” device was an iphone. But I’d agree, if Apple makes a 7” device, it will more likely be a phone and very expensive. Unfortunately for me, I can’t stand big phones. I just want it as a secondary consumption device to use at home.

They are wildly popular in SEA. Inexpensive multimedia, phone & IM devices they are. Has a thriving used market too.

I use one myself.

There is no indication that Apple is working on this at this time. Apple realizes that there is no competition out there. The Mini 5 is a great upgrade but Apple could just leave it as is for another two years and it would still sell well. Smaller bezels would get me to upgrade.

I would buy one if it were $150.00 cheaper!!

It's a nice device, but I'm not paying 400 dollars for a device Apple should have modified greatly. For that price it needs stereo speakers, Face ID and smaller bezels, and USB C.
Wait, so you demand a $400 device to have FaceID?

Why not just demand Apple to sell the iPad Pro for $400 while you’re at it?

Value is in the eye of the beholder.

If you have an iPad Mini 2, the iPad Mini 5 is a no-brainer.

I only brought the iPad mini 5 because I think this would be the last iPad mini line up. As phone is getting bigger and bigger, there is little room for 7.9 inch iPad for its existence.

I am much perfect iPad Pro line. I don’t care about specification that much. The first generation iPad Pro works wonderfully with the second hand Smart Keyboard. The whole thing costs less than a brand new iPad mini. The iPad Pro plus the Smart Keyboard with iOS 13 is little computer for itself. I can reasonably do much of word editing, excel spreadsheet.

iPad mini is just too small and lack of smart connectors.

iPad and iPadOS is still too restrictive for lots of professional environments. Not until Apple give true directory access, multiple ports and ability to hook up with external monitor for secondary display.

Sometimes, even basic browsing task, is far better experience on my laptop than iPad. I have tried to complete the entire immigration process on iPad, but it is simply cannot be done. The immigration forms are too complex and it will only open on Mac or Windows version of Adobe Reader.

Yes I demand actual effort.

Show me a competing tablet with FaceID tech for $400.
Demanding effort is one thing, but expectation seems foolish in this regard.

Why not demand an iPad Pro for $100? I mean Apple must put effort to push down cost, right?
The funny part is they’ve tricked you into thinking Face ID is an expensive feature by keeping it exclusive to overpriced phones and tablets.

You can only make that claim if you can show me an alternative that offers the similar tech for less. If it's not that expensive, the Chinese would've done one for a lot less. Simple.

Face ID sounds pretty difficult to me as an engineer. You have to project light, analyze everything within the scope of the camera and try to find a face. Then match the biometrics of the face. Most people wouldn't understand how a simple CPU adds two numbers let alone the millions of lines of code needed to implement something like Face ID.

But consumers take this stuff for granted and consider it simple.

What a load of crap. "Apple can't be overpriced and under-featured if there's no competition!"

I think that his argument is on point. If you have a monopoly, you can charge more. If the marketplace deems the price unreasonable, then competition will move in and the price will go down because of that competition.

Asked about competitors and why, according to the Express, they have avoided face-scanning biometric security, Joswiak says it's down to expense.

"This is a pretty costly system," he says. "Our competitors think they can create something similar with a single camera and that's often what they want to do. Unfortunately, there's a reason why this is costly; there's a reason why it has all these components because security is night and day over someone trying to do this off a 2D image."

"It's good to take a step back and look at the technological beast of that tiny little notch area of your iPhone," he continues. "There's so much important and sophisticated technology inside. There's a speaker, a microphone, an ambient light sensor and a proximity sensor plus the all scanning components of the Face ID system."

If you expect something to be cheaper, then there should be a similar alternative at lesser price. Simply show one instead of showing tantrum.

My feeling is that Apple knew there was a relatively small yet still profitable fan base of iPad users that wanted a mini 5, so they modernized the guts and added Pencil support, but did not see this as a big enough volume seller to warrant a new design. It seems like a "for the fans" updates more than anything, and I still believe that this might be the last mini we get.

Hopefully this isn’t the case. My tablet has been very helpful assisting me in my job. It’s powerful yet portable
