I have a question to this community as a long time iPhone user, what would be a good cheap phone (used) to play around with Android?

Hard to beat a new Pixel 9a for $399.

$499 another solid device from what I've heard

All reviews show high praise for the 13R. I still love my OP 13 although it's kinda underappreciated with me preferring the ZF7 and S25U. Hate to leave it sitting in my desk most of the time. That fast charging and battery life are insane. Might need to sell it and make a little beer (or bourbon) money.

Haha I hear you as I also have the 13 sitting by the sidelines since the ZF7 but I will try to get more use out of it once the Fold craze subsides

Really? I have never heard that a series chips with generally 6 cores that have performed extremely well over the years against Android chips in performance and GPU with independent tests or benchmarks ever year.

I have seen a series chips in the last decade surpass Snapdragon chips for the first time.

How iOS handles multi-tasking has little to nothing to do with the chips.

Apple has chosen on purpose to keep focus on primary windows. Apple has chosen to prioritize apps in foreground to keep active and quickly inactivate background apps for battery life. Phone OS generally prioritize battery life.

If Apple ever makes a foldable I am sure all the widgets and layout will be well thought out so my expectation would be pretty high. Now I would like to be able to manually choose a performance mode if battery life is not my priority but that will never happen so why even think about it??
Yes this is all very nice but the bottom line is Apple for whatever reason limits the A series chips split screen multi tasking etc as the believe it would compromise the users experience for mobile devices (IPhone) and the M series chips are more suited as used in IPad Pro

If the IFold is to provide similar functionality to other Folds multi tasking etc. Then if Apple use the A series chips this would be a fundamental change to their current position.

Maybe Apple will come up with merge of IOS and IPadOS to solve this.

I have just changed from Apple and I have had an iPhone since the first model. I just found the latest Apple phones tiresome and they have not really moved forward.

The multi-tasking abilities of Android have made using a Samsung Fold 7 way more useful than the iPhone and ultimately they are basically the same width!

Something I was thinking about yesterday. I was searching for places on Google yesterday and found where I wanted to go. It was so seamless pulling it up on Google maps. iOS really struggles here. Sure you can use Apple Maps to search but I always found the search results lacking and the minute you're on a Google search, it's much harder to just pull it up on Apple Maps. I often found myself having to copy and paste an address from a Google search into Maps when I had an iPhone.

Just such an underrated thing that you get on Android.

If I search do a Google search on my iPad or iPhone and tap ‘Directions’, it automatically opens in Google Maps. Yes, I cannot tap just the address to directly open Google Maps but I’d wager Google could create links for those to enact that behavior same as they do for directions but just don’t choose to outside of Android. If you copy it and long press, you are offered the option to directly open it in Apple Maps.

Apple allowing the selection of a default map/navigation app would help solve this problem too.

also Apple disables some features on some apps to encourage people to use Apple native apps. GBoard for instance is hindered on IOS. Or I want to use Google Photos or maps as default for everything but can't.

Yep. That's why I never even bothered to download any of the Google apps because I figured they'd either be missing features or Apple would make sure to make it just hard enough to use them within the OS that they'd push you to the Apple app.

Yeah, lack of changing defaults for certain app categories is a hinderance for certain. I haven’t tried using GBoard on iOS is ages—what’s disabled vs. its Android counterpart? For the most part, I feel like Google’s apps on iOS/iPad OS mirror the functionality they offer on Android but again, I don’t use all of them so not exactly fully up to speed.

Most of the features on GBoard are disabled...the ability to resize it for instance. Then Google Maps or Photos does not operate as on Android because you can't set it as default. That alone makes them not the same as on Android. but I see Apples POV on those apps. It is not uncommon. I just feel the Google apps are better.

That's been the thing that has really kept me on Android. I realized that I just really prefer the Google apps for most things. I do use Samsung Notes though and I use their calendar widget. One of these years, if the Pixel line can compete with what Samsung has been releasing, I might dive in. But having used both the Pixel 9 Pro and the S25 Ultra, Samsung still just hits in so many areas because of OneUI.

Although i do like One UI 8....I wish I could get the Pixel Android version on my S25U...that would be nirvana.

Well, you might all be shocked by this but the Apple event that literally nothing for me. It's just another year and another iPhone. Happily keeping my Fold 7 until the Fold 8 comes out.
Same. 🥱 Except no Fold for me…waiting for my Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Pixel Watch 4 next month.

I know I'm using a super thin phone, but I just don't see the big deal lol.
Yeah I get that it’s pointless for a lot of people. But I’m kind of a special case, I was all over the Pro Max/Plus sizes until I got a wrist injury that relegated me to smaller phones since I can’t hold heavier ones without pain. So this will be the first larger display I can actually use. Given that I also grew tired of OS hopping and settled for Apple/iOS. All those things aside though, I also find it very aesthetically pleasing :p

Makes sense to me! I will not argue with that at all.

My wife wants my 16PM since her 14 Pro is no longer charging via lightning. I am happy with my Pixel 10 Pro, but I can still justify a new iPhone "for testing purposes" (read: He Who Dies With the Most Toys Wins). Just wish the new Pro phones weren't so ugly.
